To be fair, the katana just asks for force behind its swing. Mika was always good at applying force with impact weaponry like the maces, but he kept thinking the katana was for stabbing the cracks of armor when, being a blade and all, it does its damage against relatively softer targets by concentrating all forces to a narrow edge.

Incidentally, the rise of maces and warhammers was a response to hardened armor, which swords would bounce off of since they were no longer the harder of the two. The mechanics of nanolaminate aren't exactly well defined either so we don't really know on a materials level which is the harder object between the katana and the Graze-01.

But still, if there ever was a time when going beyond the limits and achieving maximum Jap would do something, it's with a giant fucking katana being swung like a giant fucking katana should: a mighty swing, overwhelming in force as to strike the enemy down on the draw of the blade.

Mika's personality is called "phlegmatic". He doesn't care about much, he just wants to set down in some peaceful place and have his farm. So he will kill anybody on his path to it with Orga being supposed to give him directions (and have you seen the scene when Mika made him remember that?). And he will wreck your shit if you hurt anything he cares about. He will return to consuming snacks afterwards.
I love in him he is a killing machine that, unlike Heero "Let me dramatically tell that I will kill you" and Setsuna "Let me ask about God while standing in the window of your bedroom" F. Seiei, doesn't give a shit about being a poser.

As for Guts, he also had his shit fucked since childhood. The entire Human Debris deal made him depressed and apathetic (so unlike Mika, he didn't have any goal), until he found people that genuinely cared about him (so faster than Mika he found something satisfying for himself). If it was someone with a less overpowered mobile suit, but a more competent fighter and character, then it would have recieved a better ending.
The pushing Barbados to its limits wasn't the problem, just how shitty EinGraze is that anyone beating him would seem like an asspull when talented pilots like Guts and those two other female pilots were stomped by Ein

People say that the fights were better because they were spaced out and actually had weight/importance to them but when Mika (and really Tekkadan in general) have little trouble with anything and never take consequences for their crazy schemes it's pretty lifeless. The funeral part was really forced but it was the only part we're supposed to acknowledge Tekkadan's losses before the final battle. Biscuit being the only character to die trivializes any danger they were in, too. The cast comes off as invincible as long as they say "we're gonna avenge our family by going to 'that place'" every couple of scenes. I'm not the other anon and the asspull finish could have been done much, much worse (at least the concept had hints of being able to adjust the data flow) but considering everything they got off damn clean.

He can't really grok diplomacy, to him words are nothing compared to action, and action is nothing if it doesn't achieve results. You might want to watch it again. All he purged was one pauldron at that point and suddenly was able to move from zero to the speed of light within less than a second to dodge an attack and then did in fact chop through the armor. Even so, somehow overclocking Barbatos' AV wouldn't improve your reaction speed at all. If anything, it would slow it down due to backed-up data. All that would do is maybe speed up Barbatos' response time and very marginally at that, especially considering all evidence throughout the series suggests that it is already able to respond almost instantly with just one whisker.

Honestly I'm surprised there isn't more love for him on /m/ considering he's the seasoned professional mercenary that /m/ used to talk about wanting. He's pragmatic about killing, he doesn't whine about being forced to fight, he isn't the grade-skipping genius son of a mobile suit designer, genetically engineered super-programmer, or psychic messiah. He's a tough kid that grew up in a harsh environment and made the best of what he was able to do. Everybody always hates on the angst-ridden wunderkids with gifts they didn't earn in all the other shows, then when we finally get the exact opposite of what everyone bitches about, everyone complains that he's boring.

He's just Shinn but with Crank's pin instead of his sister's phone. His whole personality is "SOMEONE I LIKED DIED IN A WAR!" while he's trying to murder children. His assumptions about Tekkadan's encounter with Crank are all wrong, and for all his "honorable" posturing he's only going after petty revenge. He couldn't even be bothered to think about the effect his Ahab reactor would have on a city when he leapt in to kill an unarmed woman with his 25 meter robot.

That's a pretty far cry from saying "this is the complete system from 300 years ago", especially considering the diagram shown in McGillis's expository flashback only showed the AV connections between the shoulderblades and base of the skull. And while he did not explicitly say that the Graze-Ein took the original AV to the next level, he also does not say anything about the AV system currently in use being a knock-off or incomplete. He *does* say that research continued until recently, so it seems kind of silly to assume that 200+ years of research into the application of the system that was used 300 years ago has yielded nothing but replicating the 300 year old system. It seems only logical that Ein's version is a more advanced version of Mika's rather than Mika's being a knock-off.

As for what you CAN do with vulcans/machine cannons to a Gundam? Cameras (the eyes) are vulnerable places on a Gundam and rarely, if ever, exploited.

I'm not saying it was the way to beat Mika but he SHOULD'VE tried it so he wouldn't look as fucking useless.

Also it could've been cool (albeit cheesy, but cool and cheesy is how /m/ works) to see the Barbatos blinded and having Mika deal with that through sheer instinct and alien vagina.
