Weber's Bolo aren't the best, but he's still quite an /m/ author.

The original Keith Laumer novels are good, and Kratman's Big Boys Don't Cry is a straight-up tearjerker (Course, that's normal for BOLO novels. The "Never give up" spirit is one of the primary themes.)

That said, in reference to Kratman, I haven't read Big Boys Don't Cry and all I know of him is that he's apparently very far right, but I read an excerpt of Big Boys Don't Cry on Amazon and the writing seemed pretty pedestrian, IMO--he was trying to go for how clinical the Bolos sounded but never really pulled it off.

Those are mark XXX and beyond. Those are using hellbores as point defense. Hellbores that were used on older models as main armament. Add multilayer external and internal shields, flight capacity and neural interface for humans to get a picture. Nothing on /m/ that isn't a straight super can even compare. Quanta maybe or Turn A and that is discusable depending on who shoots first and how well nanomachines fare against shields. They are pinacle of 'real' genre, buffed to the limits of physics.
And they still pretty much lost in their universe.
