I didn't feel much for Zeta's deaths either. I just used that reaction pic.
Though I will say that I actually did feel some sadness when Kamille got mindbroken in the finale, because he's a guy who evolved as a character throughout the series and is somewhat likable by the end. When something bad happened to him, I actually felt sorry for him to an extent. No one in IBO has received any sort of character arc. Very few of them have histories to care about or distinct personality traits. Especially the specific ones who died in this episode. One girl was usually happy, the other one was always serious. That's about as far as their characters went. Shino wasn't unlikable, but he was also just 'the upbeat guy'.
The saddest part of the episode is when they killed off nameless grunts in an attempt to evoke emotion.

I don't think you've kept up with the setting of IBO, have you? The whole star system is completely fucked. It's a Cyberpunk-style future where corporations are running everything and stuff like slavery is basically allowed, with child soldiers being a common occurance.

Seemingly everyone knows this but Merridumb, Kudelia, and and Carta. Before CGS and Tekkadan, most of these kids were starving on the street, or being hauled by slavers. Atra was basically a slave in a whorehouse, and probably would have been gang raped the second she was considered of profitable age.

I think it was covered earlier on in the aftermath of when Gut's brother died but Mika's coldness and lack of personality/overpragmatism is how he deals with his trauma.

Through flashbacks, it's been shown that Mika was responsible for feeding Atra and ultimately bringing her to Biscuit's family through CGS when she happened to come across him. He's also visibly upset when anyone from tekkadan is threatened with danger, so there is some depth to him. Not that guy, but this is the biggest problem with Mika. He doesn't grow as a character, and he's entirely one-note. For the entire series, he's just been the serious, deadpan child soldier who fights for Orga's promise. Nothing important has happened to him to change his outlook or evoke a serious emotional response other than him getting angry after biscuit's death like everyone else. For a character, especially a main character, he's absurdly boring.
