is the first half of macross 7 really that bad? i'm currently watching the series in production order (just finished plus) and i'm kinda thinking about skipping over 7.
judging from what i've read, it seems like another zz gundam, which is not exactly something i want to experience again
If you feel like you can't be bothered watching M7, don't bother with any of the others after it. It only manages to get worse.from there.
7 isn't bad, it just takes a long time to get used to and has a slow (well more like overly repetitive) start
I too was wondering when things would pick up but about halfway through it gets better

The First 8 episodes can be a slog but even as early as episode 9-10 it starts to pick up
You'll see later the necessity in taking so many episodes to establish the setting

I honestly loved it, it's SoL in space

Depends on how you see the franchise. A lot of people see Macross as some super serious franchise where no fun is allowed, and I don't understand why (is it because of Robotech?). But Macross 7 is pretty much that, super fun with a guy piloting a mech with his guitar while singing.
This is what you're getting into, if it looks interesting, watch it. If it looks terrible, skip it (and skip Zero and Frontier)

Enjoying Macross 7 is all about whether you can catch on and memorise the lyrics of the songs, especially the lyrics to Planet Dance.

As you said it is because of Robotech and Macross Plus. They stripped out much of the goofiness inherent to Macross to make a "Mature Story for Mature People."
