Rework some elements of Sekai and Fumina's characters and mobile suits.

Sekai and Fumina are both slightly less obsessive about martial arts and Gunpla Battle respectively.
Instead of beating up a gang of adults while trying to find his sister, Sekai is just introduced wearing his training gi, as it is the only uniform he has, having just arrived from a "training retreat". People think he is wierd and he keeps brandishing a photo of a person he refers to as "MYYYY SISSTERRRRR MIRRRAAIAAIII!" who he plans to find and defeat. Less of a "dumb anime protagonist", more of a "mini Domon Kashu".

After finding the school has no martial arts clubs, Fumina shows him a video from last years Gunpla Battle world championship, featuring a melee only fight in the last sixteen. Exited he joins the gunpla battle club. Fumina is more of a "gunpla nerd" and knows all about this strange fighting technique called a "meta", that confuses Sekai.

We then proceed in a similar manner to the actual show, beating the schools plamo club and gaining Yuma as an ally.
However the gunpla he uses was just a Dom with a custom head on the clubs shelves, that when hit with a beam rifle shot by Yuuma (before he turned traitor and joined them) split open to reveal... what looks like a smaller white Dom. This turns out to be a gunpla built by Sei Iori and donated to the school, whose plaque reads "Testament of Skill - RG Shining Gundam Camouf"

Its a Camouf (http://gundam.wikia.com/wiki/GM_Camouf) with particle emitters made from the hands of the Shining Gundam and the Destiny Gundam mixed together. It has four of these, one on each hand and foot, as well as a minovsky flight system, particle bit/beam bit system and real grade skeleton. It is horribly overpowered and allows Sekai to do his Jigen Hao shit. He ends up upgrading it with a normal looking gundam (cos it cant stay looking unique for long) head and additional emitters in the knees and elbows.

The additional emitters and the normal emiters are also turned into bits, allowing each to separate and be maneuvered indipendantly and each construct a "plavsky hologram" of the rest of the gunpla, giving Sekai some explanation to his bullshit final attack. His first upgrades happen in episode twelve, his last just before the final.

Fumina starts with the GM Cardigan but switches to a transforming "winning" SD, but then after the twelfth episodes builds her own special "Triple Winning Gundam". This is a unique gundam similar to a "Heavyarms" version of her GM Cardigan in design, with a heavy blocky backpack. The backpack turns out to be master grade arms and legs the "Triple Winning" can wear to turn into a master grade (Its a SD, HG and MG all at once). It can also "purge" its normal limbs to turn into an SD. The spare parts can be used to repair and boost her team mates.

Each member of the team also has their own "rival". Sekai's is Mirai, Yuuma is Gyanko, Yuuma's is Minato. They have individual conflicts in the first few episodes, but the three become the rival team for the first half of the contest. After their defeat they become allies.

The second half of the series has them against team Celestial Sphere, except it is being led by Shimon, who is the american Sekai saw in the video Fumina showed him that got him to try Gunpla Battle in episode one (he is half Japanese and goes to school in japan but enters the World Tournament as an American).

The battle system is also somewhat changed as you can now loose battles, but as long as you win more than 50%, you still advance. This allows us to have conflict with the possibility of loss.

The plot goes:

Episodes 1-3 : the protagonist and first rival team form.

Episodes 4- 11: Nationals Entry Tournament against first rivals

Episodes 12-13: "Learning the meta". Fumina finally manages to teach the building obsessed Yuuma and fighting obsessed Sekai the importance of using your resources in the best way to reflect your own ability AND combat your opponents, and the "meta games" of gunpla battle (particle management, SD-super attacks/HG-economy/RG- RG burst systemdifferences etc). In the build/fight of build fighters Sekai is the fighter, Yuuma the bulder, but Fumina the "Gunpla Battler" who finally makes them an effective team. Fumina finally learns to fight as best she can, not just to support the others. This happens during the training camp. Guest appearences from the female Meijin Kawaguchi and the Ex Mejin, Tatsuya Yuuki, who quit to focus on worldwide Gunpla Battle Promotion.

Episodes 14-20: National Tournament. Celestial Sphere are introduced. We learn they are all driven to win for their own reasons (Shimon for his sickly brother who builds his suits, Saga Ado for the joy of crushing others and finding an equal battle before his illness fucks up his hands for life, Shia Kijima to become the next Mejin).

Episodes 21-24: Finals. Celestial Sphere learn the true meaning of Gunpla Battle - that its still just a really fun game, and thats why it is important to people. If you forget its a game it will lose that importance to you. Sekai wins the final match with his secret technique, but only due to the timer running out.

Episode 25: The Builders Grand Prix- every character enters their own new gundam. A Swiss exchange highschooler trained by Allensby Beardsly wins, congratulated by his friends ( a clear third rival team). Minato loses with the Super Fumina because everyone thinks its awful. There is a giant free for all battle. Domon and Allensby watch from the corner with Ramba Rall, before joining in.

How about just:

More focus on team interaction and Gunpla Battle as a game.
The Nationals have rules that allow progression without 100% winrate, so the Try Fighters can lose battles giving us actual drama and tension.
Try Fighters actually lose the first entry bracket but win the losers bracket and come out on top.
Particle efficiency and running out of particles are explained early and are a part of the game not just a deus ex machina when needed.
Jegan How Are You is treated as normal attacks, and are not just an auto win button. Kamiki uses more melee without particle effects, just closing in and punching suits to scrap. He gets "fist bits" that let him be an actual threat at range without particle magic.
Less "comedy battles", more hard tactics and skill being important (the Ez8 team beats the Try Fighters, forcing them into the losing bracket and forcing them to stop relying on super attacks and to learn to work as a team from the start of the match).
More Tryon 3, Tryon 3 beats Try Fighters in the nationals.
More cohesive rival teams that are built up as a threat throughout the whole series, rather than being turned into jobbers and replaced every six episodes.
No romance at all.
Sei and Reiji are returning characters towards the end.

This I can definitely agree with. In Try I could guess the outcome of every single match before it started, just by who was participating and their level of character development.

At least the first season had a few surprise outcomes.

At least Domon regularly gets into fisticuffs, ineffective though it may be. Sekai doesn't roll out of fire, no reversals, no throws, no blocking that is actual martial arts blocking instead of "ugh enemy so stronk" grunty blocking, nothing.

Every move is literally a Super Gauge move, the only difference is which one of the pitifully short list of moves he is currently shouting for. No Plavsky limit is ever applied to them despite the power of moves like Senpū Tatsumaki-geri which is basically a tornado MAPW or any of the hyper moves against the Denial and Team Celestial Sphere, while Crossbone X1 is struck with an acute Plavsky Particle shortage the likes of which only the Destiny in the original airing of TV SEED D. comes close to, despite its minor modifications from the original model.

One would think that his martial arts base allowing him to invent his own super moves that we end up seeing in the show, to respond to situations in Gunpla battle, would make for a better story of how Gunpla is Freedom.

I'd put Ezelcant in the first gen killing Yurin instead of Decil and becoming Flit's enemy because of it, with Ezelcant becoming ruler of Vagan to fight Flit while Flit becomes a leader to fight him and both having failed savior complexes because of their experiences piloting in the first gen.

I'd have Zeheart in the second gen, but dying envious of Aseuma at the end of the second gen, and Zeheart leaving to start a rebellion against Ezelcant on Zeheart's wishes.

And then Zera Gins as Ezelcant's clone in the third being a rival for Kio from the start, with Kio becoming independent of Flit and his own person while Ezelcant keeps Zera on a leash and Kio's video game thing is a allusion to how Flit might have controlled him while Ezelcant does control his literal clone. Have Ezelcant get fed up at the end and never get over his failure and savior complex while Flit does thanks to the now independent Kio.

That way each character has a rival who mirrors them and their own purpose.

Fumina is the main character, Sekai and Yuu are mostly there to show the two extremes (focus on battle/focus on building) that she balances. There's no dramatic find of Build Burning, she and Yuu help Sekai build a melee unit.

Through the show her imaginative units and unorthodox tactics gain attention. Meijin Kawaguchi (there is no Lady Kawaguchi because that character was pointless) takes her team under his wing, trying to groom a team that can offer him a challenge on the world stage.

Flit kills Decil, Ezelcant's son while Ezelcant kills Yurin, Flit's girlfriend (I guess), to inspire hatred between them. Asemu wants to impress his always at work dad, but Flit barely pays attention to him because he's not an X-Rounder. Romary doesn't exist. Zeheart becomes friends with Asemu while checking Earth out, then dies regretting that he can't have Asemu's life (instead of his wife). Woolf makes him a great pilot and Asemu finally kills Zeheart to prove his piloting skill to his dad, before throwing the AGE device at Flit and leaving since killing Zeheart made him realize he doesn't need to prove shit. Flit realizes he fucked up and treats Unoa's kid, Kio like a son to make up for it.

Meanwhile, Asemu has two kids on Mars while acting a rebel leader, Lu and Deen. Flit builds the AGE-3 for Kio from Asemu's data, Kio trains under Vagan turned Fed Shanalua, who everyone knows is a former Vagan and who turned after a while on Earth as a spy because Mars is shit and Earth isn't, and she realized how crazy Ezelcant's plan is, before dating Seric on the ship, and gains advice on how to treat war from them.

Kio uses the AGE-3 for a while but then goes to Mars(using the Orbital's ability to enter and exit atmosphere without issue and high speed for the journey or something) and meets his uncle and his kids before Asemu gives him the AGE-FX - an AGE he built using Terran and Vagan technology to surpass the AGE-system. Ezelcant thinks his son was a failure and clones himself to make up for it right at the start of Gen-3, debuting the Legilis at the same time as the AGE-FX using some of the same style of tech and both Kio and Zera battle over several episodes.

Flit eventually uses Zera's change of heart to convince Flit the Vagan can be saved (along with Asemu, his wife and kids, Shanalua etc), Flit doesn't commit genocide, proves himself to be better than the genocidal Ezelcant (who he defeats before firing off the missile) and all is eventually well.

But I would've loved to see the teams using GM ground types instead of MP Gundams. and when Shiroh's GM ground gets fucked up fighting Apsulus II it gets rebuilt using the spare parts from the RX-78 and becomes the RX-79 Ground Gundam.

Strip out Yuuma, he adds nothing to the show. Now you have 2x2 battles, which should be easier to handle from a choreography standpoint. Make Sekai someone who's a big fan of the nonstandard shows like G and SD Gundam, and wants to prove they can be just as competitive in Gunpla Battle as more traditional gunpla. The Build Burning is his own creation: strip out the Plavsky bullshit, it's just a gunpla designed for maximum mobility and the toughness to handle melee combat. The emitters on the hands can be used to fire Hadouken-style fireballs, so it's not useless in ranged combat. Introduce Junya sooner and have him be a recurring adversary. Strip out Celestial Sphere, but keep the Transient as an encounter of some kind since it's a spiffy design. Gyanko hooks up with Simon, with that and Aina taken out of the picture that gets rid of the haremshit: one of the big draws of the first Build Fighters was that everyone had an OTP.

One of the details that annoyed me in gbf try was how yuuma was the one to upgrade build burning, and then sei sent pretty much an exact copy/spare parts of it for the tournment.

I think yuuma's upgrade should've been something like what the x divider is to the gx instead of having him make a new unit, or have sei send them a completely different gunpla.
