I think Kou's problem overall was being put in with the wrong set of pilots. Keith and Burning were the only decent pilots on the Albion's roster, and Burning died pretty much halfway. Without him, there wasn't really a decent mentor for Kou to help him mature.

I think Nina gets kind of a bad rap.

I just finished rewatching 0083 last night, and it's not like she's doing this because of some "I love Gato more than you". THAT would be some NTR shit, but that's not what happens. The reality is she cares about both of them and spent 12 episodes watching them (though mostly Kou) get hurt trying to kill each other, and she wanted them both to be safe.

But that can't happen as the two are opposed to such a level that they basically have to kill each other. Which is why it's supposed to be a tragedy.

So I don't fault Nina when she's just letting her emotions get the better of her. I fault the writer for suddenly introducing that she apparently used to date Gato out of nowhere.

Cima was using a Beam Machine Gun, you're thinking of a beam spray gun which has a lot less punch. A Beam Machine Gun's shot is on the same level as a regular beam rifle, don't forget she sank a salamis with just a single shot to the bridge. Also Kou was dodging Gato's shots even before his I-field went down if I recall all those scenes correctly.

It's plot armor when he doesn't hit Kou with ever shot perfectly, but it's certainly not plot power that gives Gato the knowledge of where the GP-03Ds I-Field is or the fact that it can separate from the rest of it's armor. Gato wasn't there for that fight where Kou went on without it.
