That explosion was from the Minerva's main cannon hitting the water. You can even see the red line from the shot fading out as the blast wave approaches the ship. Freedom did not blow up. The editing of the scene made it *look* like Freedom blew up, because of the order in which they showed several events which were all supposed to be happening at the same time, but it was deliberate trickery. Freedom got stabbed in the reactor, Kira hit the Neutron Jammer Canceller Canceller, and the Tannhäuser blew up a bunch of water.

Impulse stabbed Freedom through the gut. Freedom's idle saber went through Impulse's left shoulder armor, but otherwise Impulse was undamaged.

Next thing dozens of bite-size chunks of Freedom are floating in the water and Kira is riding the torso block to the sea floor. Meanwhile the Impulse is now slagged all over, burnt down one leg, Force wings are twisted, the head and left arm are blown off entirely.

But we saw what that same explosion did to the Impulse with it's phase shift up. If Kira turned off his NJC, then his phase shift should have shut down leaving him unprotected from the blast. By all rights, Kira should be soggy hamburger mixed in with the Freedom's wreckage even if his reactor didn't explode.

It IS plot convienience to spare a main character a death. But it's not nearly as absurd as that being the end result of a nuclear explosion, which should have killed everyone in the area, Shinn and Minerva included. It's honestly more forgivable than the Aegis survival.

Athrun's survival of getting stabbed was worse, since he was hit in the cockpit, had no flight suit on, and was underwater for a much longer time. Although at least Athrun was injured for several episodes because of it, while Kira is back on his feet by the time they return to Orb.

There was a mushroom cloud other times Minerva fired it's positron gun like on the moon and during the lohengrin attack. It does that.

What there wasn't however, was the usual nuclear explosion flash, which is seen when nuclear missles explode, and when Justice exploded.

Considering Freedom is jabbing Impulse through the head and into it's Force Pack, a significant part of Impulse's damage (mostly the head being gone) was probably caused by that. Freedom meanwhile has a hole right through it's center, so it could more easily break apart.

A nuclear blast, however would have left nothing. Justice was instantly blown to dust when it went nuclear, with a big enough explosion to wreck genesis and be nearly right in the faces of the rest of the TSA way back from Jachin.

Here's the reason why nobody remembers this scene correctly. Minerva fires Tannhauser, explodes, Shinn kills Kira, Kira explodes, but you don't see him turn off the reactor until after the explosion. By extension the explosion could not have been his reactor.

Yes. The shockwave that ripped Freedom's remaining wing, both arms, and legs off, reducing them to so many floating chunks, conveniently went around the entire torso and head. Despite the lower torso being breached, the reactor off, the phase shift having no power AND being breached. The shockwave powerful enough to make Kira, the ultimate coordinator with all his superhuman endurance, pass out, and apparently rupture some internal just enough to produce a tiny trickle of blood up his throat and out the corner of his mouth while he's laying back at an incline. But despite all that force, never dislodge his arm, nor knock him out enough to make it slump from the conveniently placed reactor shutoff button.

Oh man, I could just see the movie now.

Three years after the end of Destiny, many small conflicts have been breaking out around the world. In the name of peace, Lacus and ZAFT begin to perform armed interventions followed by taking over, I mean, moderating the negotiations.

While to Kira everything seems to be going fine at first, a new Anti-ZAFT sentiment has been sweeping the globe in response to these events. ORB is again attacked for their ties to Lacus, with Cagalli dying and Athrun captured. ZAFT finds themselves once again viewed as space monsters trying to take over the world.

Athrun reemerges once again to fight Kira, and during this he lets a major truth he discovered out. Kira did not survive the Aegis explosion, and the guy sitting in the upgraded Strike Freedom is simply a clone created by Lacus's people. One of a series in fact. This shatters Kira, and he is cut down by Athrun.

Many ZAFT personnel who have been questioning her actions, including Shinn, defect around this point. At this point, Lacus brings out her secret weapon. MP Strike Freedom's piloted by Kira clones. Epic battle ensues that leaves Shinn dead protecting a pregnant Luna, Athrun without an arm, and Murrue executing Lacus.
