How would things have changed if Katz survived Zeta and ZZ?

Judau and Katz would be feuding. Potentially they'd be able to mellow each other out and grow as individuals, but their initial relationship would be very rocky (kind of like how Katz died to begin with).

Katz would, with Kamille out of commission, believe he's the most rightful person to pilot the Zeta. He's the experienced soldier in comparison to Judau, but Judau would be the naturally more talented pilot. Katz would still have Sarah's death weighing on him and the way Judau acts could potentially remind him of Scirocco with the way Judau naturally attracts people (if DWG2 is anything to go by, Scirocco, Roux, and Judau got along very well).

So until the ZZ Gundam actually gets there, there would be a back and forth of pilots for the Zeta and the Mk II.

Eventually they'd learn to get along and may even become friends. Judau and Katz will definitely both be broken up by Hayato's death and they'd cement a friendship after that, even if there's some lingering doubts when Haman continues to try to pull Judau to her side.

Overall he'd be piloting the Zeta more frequently. Mondo or Iino would likely die because then there'd be one too many pilots. Iino more likely because Iino's fucking useless.

At the end of the series Katz would remain with the Federation and join Amuro & Bright in Londo Bell, probably becoming the pilot of the ReGZ once Amuro gets his Nu. He'll have toned down his bratness by then and have a stronger sense of duty. He'd have a feud with Gyunei but it'd be more him trying to get Gyunei to realize what he's doing will only lead to heartache and one or both of them dying, because he tried to do the same thing with Sarah. Char essentially becoming Scirocco, Quess becoming Sarah, and Gyunei becoming himself will be what Katz would see and he'd be pissed at Char almost as much as Amuro was. He'd try his best to stop the repeat of that tragedy.

It's even better if you extend it to Hathaway's Flash.

By that time, Katz will be a super-duper veteran Feddy pilot and would be the pilot for Penelope. When Hathaway throws his temper tantrum and runs off with the Xi Gundam to play terrorist, Katz eventually figures out his identity and realizes that Hathaway is more or less a younger version of himself who never got over the death of their loved one (Quess) unlike him with Sarah. With that motivation in mind, he sets out to convince Hathaway about moving away from the mistakes of his youth. Many cameo appearances by Kai because TEARS OF TIME repeating themselves.

Katz eventually succeeds and manages to convince Hathaway to peacefully surrender, but like the original novel he's still caught and accidentally executed by Bright. Because Bright was so traumatized by this incident that he retired early, Katz takes his position as the new Londo Bell commander, a much more wiser and hard-boiled man who had seen countless tragedy, but ultimately lost all his hope on humanity after finally realizing himself just how corrupt the Federation had become.

Katz inherits Hathaway's will to usurp the corrupt regime of the Federation, and using his large influence over the military, he reforms the AEUG to take acton.

He dons a mask for this purpose, this time hellbent on eradicating the mistakes of his youth.

Tot Master G captures him instead of Roux or Leina
Seeing as he is a male and thus cannot be refined into a proper cute lady, he programs him as a sleeper agent
He is activated in Africa and hijacks the ZZ, delivering it and Puru to Glemy and the Blue Team, who rebels against Haman immediately and conquers the Earth Sphere with his additional firepower
Katz kills himself after ushering in the Glemy Century

A lot of people are seeing some really interesting alternate timelines in this thread, but all I see is Judau and his crew being way too cool/hood for Katz to deal with. Like, Katz would never get a word in edgewise and would keep running to Bright to back him up, making Katz look even more lame. Eventually he'd just get regulated to bridge bunny duties and fade into the background.

I think Katz would have fit well with Judau's gang. He'd naturally butt heads with them but it'd serve as a neat dynamic.

You could have the shenanigans with Elle and Roux over which mobile suit to pilot extend to Katz since he'd want to move up to the MK II or even Zeta since Kamille cant and Fa is at his bedside 24/7. Then ofcourse once things start to get serious they find some way to develop him out of his angst or we could go even deeper once Hayato dies.
