As for the VN, the first is about 20 hours long, with Martyrs probably being close to 40-70.

Additionally, while Gretel helps out, she is not responsible for helping to shift the story's direction like Katia and Theo do. True, a lot of their circumstances are in the shadow of Iris and Betrix's feud, but that doesn't mean that things like Katia showing up in the first place (and changing everything for Theo), and Theo doing things to assist in the rebellion to get Iris back, are invalidated because of that.

As for a light aside thing, Katia has both the first and last volume covers. That's a right reserved for the main heroine alone.

SM anime is bizarre in how much it absolutely skyrockets over the low bar that TE anime set for Muv Luv anime once you get to the second episode.

I can't comment on how much it fucks up adapting the source story, but on its own I find it far better than it has any business being. I was expecting even worse with how the first episode set things up and yet every episode after felt incredibly on point.

The political intrigue is more than enough to hold my attention. Plus it's kind of refreshing to have characters that actually show some military discipline.
It's almost like I'm watching Argevollen again.

The only real problem I have with the show, is how samey the visuals are.

I've seen Schwarzmarken and I was really surprised by it because I wasn't expecting much. I have instead binged the entire thing to date.

I've watched episode 1 of Total Eclipse, though, and have found it... kind of derivative. Pandering fanservice, lots of pointless nationalistic nods, "it's a school for mecha pilots" premise, and a far less interesting bug war premise rather than the bug war plus the element of the internal politics there is in SM.

今更柴犬の最終巻読破。
全滅ENDは免れたが、案の定、アイリスが逝ってもうた。アクスマンとベアトリクス、シュタージ長官、ヴォルター、シルヴィアは死亡。残りは生存。名前明示されてないが、作中でグレーテルの窮地を救ったのはレクイエムでシュタージに粛清されたと思われてたグレーテルの同級生。
ベアトリクスの根っこはアイリスと同じように自己犠牲の精神なんだね。アイリスの兄やヴォルターとも接点があったみたいだけど、具体的なことは明かされず。方法論の違いからアイリスと決別したのと、アイリス兄をアイリスが密告した件を恨んでる。

アクスマンは米ソがドイツの統合を許すはずがないと言っているが、これがテロドール化の伏線なんだろうか?

I decided to do a little post digging on what the Japs thought about the end of SM back before BiS came out. So the above post has some very interesting tidbits that mostly reinforce what we already know. Starting with the first post in this image, you have this very important lines. For instances, the first paragraph states all those who died in the final volume. Iris, Axmann, Beatrix, the stasi chief (Schmidt), Walter, and Sylwia. The rest survived! Gretel was saved by an old classmate she had thought the stasi had purged (so Martin, basically).

Second line talks about the similiarities between Iris and Beatrix. Both were women willing to sacrifice themselves for Jurgen's ideals (they didn't have a name back then, so they used Iris's brother to refer to him instead). Walter was friends with Jurgen and Jurgen's death was what created Beatrix's grudge.

The final line mentions Axmann and how he forshadows Theo's transformation into the Master.

Note that this was all way before BiS started (the posts were made back in 2014 when SM ended), so all this should be in the anime if it wasn't a shit adaptation.

Alright, so skipping the second post, the third post is a response to the first. Theo's "But even so, I still wanted to protect you" are actually arc words in the LN, seemingly directed at Iris. I guess the anime changed it to Katia.

The second paragraph refers to Beatrix's goals. Beatrix apparently had a martyr-complex going on that was even bigger then Irisdina. She wanted to reform the DDR into a roadblock for the BETA to buy everyone else time. She did ultimately prioritize humanity over the DDR, while Iris wished to save East Germany no matter what. Much like Iris though, she was a selfless person in the end willing to go to any lengths to do what she felt was right. In this sense, Beatrix is very similar to Yuuko; a woman willing to do monstrous deeds for the benefit of mankind.

It's difficult to tell who was really right in the end though. Heck, Beatrix might have unified Germany anyways. She had a deal going on with the West that Iris wasn't privy too after all.

Of course, we won't be getting any of this in the anime. They only have like two more episodes to explain her motivation and it would be far easier just to go with kooky Beato being evil as fuck.

The final line is basically how Theo being Master is not confirmed. This was, of course, way before the VAs were cast.
