I loved MS Saga. My only complaint was it was grindy as fuck. If you didn't stop and grind you'd fall waaaay behind enemies really quick. I loved making monstrosities like pic related though.

I absolutely loved the logistics of the customization system.
It's so simple but it works so great.
>square grid; based on the core body
>ranged weapons take up more horizontal space
>melee weapons take up more vertical space
I played some mecha choose your own adventure game on my phone once, it was alright but I can't remember the name
Super Robot Wars is obvious, but there is also stuff Front Mission, Mech Warrior/Mechassault, Digimon Cyber Sleuth

Macross Triangle Frontier and Gundam Assault Survive.
MTF is basically an expanded version of Macross Ultimate Frontier that added missions and mecha from Macross 2 and dating sim that you can completely ignore. GAS is a major retooling of Gundam Battle Assault that lets you have all your missions and mecha one one save file by money-grinding for development plans to unlock MS instead of having you pick a side for each era and unlock MS through mission objectives and/or capturing enemy MS. It also added eras for Seed and 00s1 while Gundam Battle Assault was UC-only. Only bad part is they cut a bunch of secondary pilots like South Burning, Elle Vianno, and original characters from other Gundam games.
In both cases the actual in-game control is identical to the previous game, and they're more flight sim / shooter type games rather than the arcade / brawler gameplay of the Gundam Vs series. Not much customization other than minmaxing stats, there are no custom loadouts or anything, but there are SO many different mecha in each game that it never really bothered me.
(a bunch of people are about to bash me for liking GAS more than GBU and I'll never understand why)
>>13952314
FFVI.
>>13952960
>Gundam Assault Survive
It's shit.
It plays like battloid mode in MTF, but the size of the stages are dramatically smaller, making it feel more cramped.
Another Century's Epidemic 2 & 3
Transformers War for Cybertron/Fall of Cybertron
Transformers Devastation

With a few of the ones I would recommend already posted, it's worth mentioning the VOTOMS PS2 game.
They nailed everything about ATs perfectly, from skating to leaving them behind to go on foot.
Also, Metal Storm from NES. The gravity gimmick is incredibly neat and the game becomes insanely difficult but rewarding.
The PS2 VOTOMS game:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLUTCokSU58
Fun as fuck, just finished unlocking everything. You go through the TV series story, and after that you unlock some extra chapters based on the OVAs. After all that, you can relive Blue Knight Berserga in an arena, against Death Messenger and Shadow Flare.
It has a really rare Scopedog called Vorct Custom. I think it's from a VOTOMS photonovel called Commando Vorct.

>Epidemic

It took ages to find a proper ISO of that game, but I love it.
>>13953180
Fucking autocorrect.
Reposting the game recommendations from some other anon:
VOTOMS Battling Road (SNES): this game uses Mode 7 extensively, so it ends up looking like Super Mario Kart with robots. You play as some kid that has to save a girl called Yougle. It's a very short game, and there are two "modes". Some battles are free-roaming inside an arena, and others are fought on-rails.
Evangelion JO (PSP/PS2): tries to be like the N64 game, but it's pretty mediocre (not like the N64 game was spectacular). It starts with the plot from the 1.0 Movie (it's from a time before 2.0 was made), and after the movie plot ends, you continue with the TV plot. There's a tacked on VN mode, but it's very barebones, and you don't need it to actually finish the game. It also has some very basic strategy elements, like you can put special buildings in the battlefield beforehand, to help you during battle.
VOTOMS Blue Knight Berserga Story (PSX): very basic, but fun game. Actually, the story from the novel takes a backseat in the game, because the main mode is Battling Mode. You can play Blue Knight Story Mode, but it ends really fast, and the final boss is cheap as fuck. In Battling Mode, you can talk to many people in different places, and even choose who your Battling manager is. The customization is pretty good, you can paint every part of the AT separately, and even put your emblem on them.
During Battling Mode, some charaters from Blue Knight Story appear, but I don know if you end up against Shadow Flare, since I've never finished it.
Ah, you don't need to fight everytime in the arena - you can bet on fights too.

- Pailsen Files stage

Giren no Yabou Zeon no Keifu
Giren no Yabou Zeon Dokuritsu Sensouden
Giren no Yabou Axis no Kyoui V
Shin Giren no Yabou
All four games are great, but have extremely different gameplay features.
Full list of changes from ZnK to AnK:
-Diplomacy Menu removed
-Alignment system added
-Unit remodeling system added
-Most pilot-custom units are obtained via unit remodelling instead of
developing plans
-Dodais and Base Jabbers can be added to units via unit remodelling instead of combination command
-Turns alternate between day and night
-At night (Earth areas only), ZOC (Zone of Control) is negated and searching is more difficult
-All movies replaced with still pictures
-Character cut-ins can optionally include the unit behind the character
-AEUG HQ moved from La Vie En Rose to Grenada
-The game does not end if the commanding general is killed in battle
-New playable factions (Quatro's AEUG, Gremmy's Axis, and CCA Char's Neo Zeon)
-Existing factions extended with lots of new events, characters, and
units (especially for Z, ZZ, and CCA)
-New OYW sidestories: Lost War Chronicles (characters only) and MS IGLOO
-Escape systems (Core Block, Full Armor, etc.) must be activated manually via a command, and will not automatically activate when the unit reaches 0 HP
-When a carrier unit is destroyed, any units within are ejected to surrounding hexes (if possible) with a half HP damage penalty
-Adjacent enemy areas can no longer be entered from a contested area during the battle phase
-Enemy plans are randomly awarded based on funds allocated to intelligence each turn
-Most units can be built in 1 or 2 turns
Shin GnY has gigantic hex map on entire earth and space, instead of global map, but they removed zz and z campaigns.
GnY ZdS has great 3d animations, more story cutscenes and completely different global map control, based on front line system, but there is nothing more than Giren and Revil scenarios.
>>13953093
>plays like the batroid mode
>maps are too small for the transforming ms to take advantage of the plane controls and almost no flying enemies so you just crash into the invisible walls everytime
t-thanks
I don't think I've actually gotten anyone going "I played that and it's shit" in response to this. It's not perfect, I'll admit, some of the controls take getting used to (There are vehicle stages and if you haven't practiced vehicle controls you're up shit creek on those), but it's got charm, there are some weapons that aren't really standard, the enemy AI is surprisingly good (and the game itself surprisingly difficult at places - that second to last stage can be nightmarish), and the plot, while rather bare bones, holds up pretty well because the characters are great. Oh, and all the levels have some amount of exploration to them to get the Secret Chips and shit.

I've started playing MS Saga because of this thread, and I've gotta agree with this anon >>13952489. The game is indeed grindy as fuck. If you only fight the obligatory battles, the enemies will start to steamroll your group by 4 or 5 hours in. Also, you barely get any experience and credits, while fighting groups of 3/4/5 MS, and they can do a number on you on a single turn.
If you're looking for the customization options, they take a while to show up. You need to reach the first big city, Eisengrad, which takes a good 2 hours.

If you're for something on the same vein as R.A.D., try Remote Control Dandy (PSX). It was made by the same developers, and the control scheme is almost the same. There's also Remote Control Dandy SP (PS2).

Anyway, this game has a EU version, in Germany.
>>13955501
Remote Control Dandy is a fighting fixed perspective fighting game though isn't it?
I really liked the aspect of finding a position from which to view the fight. There's a Tetsujin 28 game like that but hell if it'll ever be localized.
>>13955506
Yeah, I don't remember if you can fly in RC Dandy, but at least in the beginning you can't.
Also, one thing I only realized near the end of R.A.D., is that if you press X, you can anchor the camera on a point, so it doesn't follow the view of your eyes. This is very good in a few situations, since the normal camera trembles a lot if you're near the robots, and sometimes it follows useless stuff (like the Volgara teleporting or your rocket punch).
You can even have your robot grab you, press X to anchor the camera, and enjoy the view. I've fought a few battles like this (with only one hand), although the robot releases you if it's knocked down.

Honestly, they give you so many hints towards a certain character, that even someone who never watched any Gundam series knows who that character will turn into.
One thing I like is how the battles aren't braindead. Certain enemy combinations can fuck you up really good, even if none of the enemies in it are bosses.
If you get a Charge Zaku + anything with Shields, you're royally fucked.

>Awful physics and generally sloppy controls
I remapped the controls to the same settings I used on Artdink's Macross games for PSP, which was in turn mapped to mimic the control scheme I used on VF-X2(ISO on PSP), which in turn wasRobotech: Battlecry controls
I found the physics to be far better than the Vs series which are just unplayable to me. I guess it's just my preference for flight-sim type games over arcade-brawler type games, so I can easily see why someone who liked and was used to the Vs games would find the Battle games unpalatable. They're similar enough in gameplay to make it REALLY jarring how differently everything moves.
As for the removed pilots, almost none of them were actual anime characters. Most were characters from other Gundam games like Zeonic Front, EIS, things like that. Only a few actual anime characters were cut, but it was still weird that they left in multiples of other characters. There are three different Kiras, Two Elpeop Ple and Ple2, two Yzaks, two or three Haman, a couple of Yazan, but no Elle Vianno, South Burning, or Nicol Amalfi. Losing Elle was especially painful for me.
Also that Surreal GM and Saku got cut, but I think they were the only actual mecha that were removed.
The added content still outweighs the cuts, though, when you consider all the SEED and 00 units and pilots added greatly outnumber the units and pilots that were removed. Also having two wingmen instead of just one, the gates between areas being two-way, and the ability to hover near your home ship to repair instead of just auto-healing a little each time you moved to a new area.

I had a wonderful experience playing this sinceI only got a disk with no info on anything else, and I didn't watch the opening. So Hal being Vladi caught me off guard since they were hammering so hard that it was him that I thought the game was pulling a fast one, then having non-UC suits show up after the Big Zam was fucking incredible.
Like other people said above, MS Saga is grindy as fuck, but the thing that really threw me off was how half of your characters are completely useless in a boss fight, and how every boss will usually do the same thing (Overcharge + Boost 3 times in a row). Couple this with the fact that you won't get an area heal skill until 15 hours in (I'm not kidding), and every boss fight will be a race to outdamage the boss before you get killed one by one.
Hell, almost everyone that played the game and didn't realize who the "boss characters" were finished more than a few boss battles with a single character left, in a desperate final attack.
Also, money is so hard to come by that you won't have any of the good healing items, and won't even be able to buy most of the news weapons once they appear. If you can endure until you get the airship, then the situation gets better.
The critical system is also random as fuck. You can be defending the same attack with 3 characters that have the same mobile suit, and 2 of them receive 30 damage, while the third one receives like, 900 damage. Shouldn't it be just double?
Do any of the games in this thread have controls as good as ZOE's?

>>13973008
>1-3 are all clunky
Depends on who's playing.
>>13973001
Bangai-O, complete with firing lasers everywhere (then again, clunky but satisfying was Treasure's schtick at times).
>>13973023
Well, if you compared them to 4/5, then 1-3 are indeed very clunky. You can stuff a box with rockets and still fly really fast in 4/5. If you did the same in 1, you were going to be heavy as fuck, and everytime you jumped you could feel the AC's "spine" shattering on impact.
>>13973040
I still wouldn't call it clunky; it's not the right word in my opinion. I prefer weighty or something along those lines. When you get good at piloting the game becomes smooth https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXq58tcKJJA
I'm not dissing the newer titles but they are simplified in comparison.
>>13952625
I traded that game to a friend years ago, and now its 200+ bux.
Well, shit.
also Phantom Crash and Gundam Side Story: Rise from the Ashes
>>13973057
The thing is, Arena and Singleplayer are very different, even in the same game. You have a fast AC with 1 or 2 deadly weapons in Arena, because you're only fighting one opponent. But that balance goes out of the window when you're in Singleplayer, because some of the missions are too long to play with just 1 or 2 weapons. And you'll want to carry more stuff to survive longer, but that also means that you'll be heavier, which means you won't dodge as many shots.
Like, 90% of the usual Arena and Single Player builds are completely useless against Nineball Seraph in Master of Arena, because he can kill you so fast even with max armor. So you can't really bring max armor, neither tons of weapons (for the enemies before him), but a compromise of both.
All in all, I believe the issue is that the single player missions will make you cross quite a lot of customization options, because they just aren't as feasible. The game indeed controls very well, but only when you have a single opponent to fight.
>>13971122
Don't you get custom pilots in that one?

I never understood the deal with all the different games and expansions. I know the different games are set in different eras, but some expansions seem to bring MS from another era into a prior era?
And yeah, I'm talking about expansions for SNES games. They do exist.
>>13969221
Kinda miffed half the wanzers in the game are locked behind the Survival Sim, I mean the stuff in there is pretty busted but would it have been a sin to actually let you buy stuff like the basic grille or desmatz lines?
>>13976831
Never managed to make them work for GNext, but there are some mods around with Crossbone and even Turn A stuff (also fixing the retarded AI).
There is a GX game with several chapters/parts (all called "senki" or something, very small files) that you can run in some emulators but never bothered to make them work properly
Holy SHIT Armored Core 3 is hardcore. Didn't know that you don't get to retry failed missions so I just failed a bunch, arrived at the story mission and got fucking destroyed. The oldschool controls feel quite "mech" tho and the customization is so fucking good (plus the designs are still clean and not too overkill like in 4 onwards). 8/10 pretty fucking good. Which of the Sequels in the 3 series are worth playing?

>>13977847
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think those failed missions will reappear after you successfully complete a few other missions. It was the same during Armored Core 1 too.
About the AC3 sequels, the only one you should really NOT play is Nine Breaker. Try it, but be warned you'll hate it at first sight.
>>13977863
I just finished watching Shining Heresy, and that stage is almost a complete recreation of the battle in the OVA, Chirico talking and all. The only thing that seems different is that Chirico damaged Titania's cockpit beforehand, so the pistol shot actually goes through an opening, not through her AT's armor.
I'm 40 hours in MS Saga, and just now reaching the final dungeon. This game is really grindy, no doubt about it. Also, every other boss has a real cheap gimmick that will completely nullify your party for 1~2 turns, except if you knew the boss' pattern beforehand. Like people said above, I had quite a lot of close calls against bosses, where I got to finish the battle with a single character alive at the end. It reminds me of very old RPGs, where battles aren't "manageable" as much as they are "kill him before he inevitably kills everyone by turn 4".
Customization is very good, but what really kills it is that money is horribly hard to come by, and the price of everything already starts through the roof. So you won't have many customization options most of the time, except cannibalizing other mobile suits and making a chimera of parts. I'm not kidding when I say some parts cost 20000, and by the end of the game, a single battle doesn't wield even 3000 credits.
If you're a completionist, you'll probably tear your hair out in frustation.
>>13977847
If you liked the controls of 3 you should jump right into Silent Line. It's an expansion to 3 and one of the best games in the franchise. You can also transfer your save file for OP-Intensify/Human+ part.
Nexus/Nine Breaker/Last Raven control differently by utilizing analogue stick for aiming.
Don't listen to >>13978357 there's not much to hate in Nine Breaker if you go in with the mindset that it's mostly just arena fighting with all parts being free. It's a PVP hub and it features an updated gameplay from Nexus so it plays great on top of it. Nexus had a scripted arena encounters that synced up with the story so I see Nine Breaker as a sister game to it with its huge amount of enemies and progression while Last Raven is a full sequel.
Sure you can skip NB but it's still a solid game.

God I love that game
Thank you, fellow anon.
Just finished MS Saga. I've gotta say, if there was ever a sequel or a remake, a lot of stuff would need to be redone.
First, make Speed actually useful - dodging is tied to the pilot's stat (Reflexes), but a dodge comes out so rarely that it may as well not exist.
Second, make more feasible boss strategies instead of "charge until you get Gatling Fire and unload every weapon", all the while getting peltered by area attacks.
And third, make the basic systems more accessible. Changing MS and parts while on the field is troublesome, and even when you have the facilities (Gaw or White Base), you still can't change them while on the map.
Maybe increase battle speed as well.
I've gotta say that I enjoyed a lot of stuff, but ended up not enjoying it overall. The most beautiful thing in the game's gotta be on the receiving end of the final boss' final attack. It shows a ground view of Twin Buster Rifle.
Anyone here heard of Cogmind? It's fairly new. Rogue like (in the classic sense, not the more modern interpretation) with an interesting tile set. You play as a mech and pick up weaponry and parts along the way, things like laser rifles and generators. You have to manage energy, keep yourself cool and not get hacked. Each item has ascii art representing it.

I remember an /m/ game I got in a shareware CD like 20 years ago. Well, a demo of it.
It was isometric, similar to MechCommander but the units were more red-greyish and it had buildings. It was also mission-based, even if I think the demo only had one stage. I could never remember what game it was.

I remember playing this. The only mission that really had me frustrated was vs the black tri-stars and the Gock- the final boss of the game. The only way to really beat that final boss was with the hammer. You'd run out of ammo for the beam rifle before getting to him, and the beam saber just didn't cut it. But other then that it was a fun game.

Every time I see this thread it makes me frustrated that I can't find an old ps2 mech game I played as a kid. Never been able to find anything about it online, like it never existed. Must be an obscure-ass game. It was some kind of third-person mech sim game similar to Armored Core but a bit slower paced (I think). Probably a Japanese game but wasn't very Japanese like Zone of the Enders or anything. Not having anything else to go off of doesn't help I guess.
Oh well, have some Heavy Gear 2.

>>13954860
It doesn't? Well, that's a shame.
I still have the disk though, and an old Wii, and a GC controller and memory card, so if I really wanted to I could totally bust it out again. I probably should do that, actually. It's a load of fun.
I've played Journey to Jaburo and I have a tip to make the game a little easier. Your weapons have a special attack. Hold SQUARE to fire it. The Beam Rifle's special attack is a shot that will kill almost anything in a single hit.
However, you lose the lock-on when using the special shot, and the MS shoots to wherever it's pointing at the time, not where the camera is pointing to.
This is pretty good against enemies in corridors (the final stage of Jaburo has one such section). Even better, the special shot gauge runs parallel to the normal beam rifle shots.
However, I must point out that most of the robots have fucking useless special attacks. You must complete Tactics Mode with Gundam, Ground Gundam and Blue Destiny before getting the Gundam Alex, but no one told you Ground Gundam and Blue Destiny have the most useless attacks in the whole game. I'm not kidding, the Ground Gundam has 15 shots of a 180mm gun, and they're not enough to down even an Acguy. Yes, all 15 of them.

But the second the AI captures a camp, it starts shitting out commandos at an absolutely fucking absurd rate. And unlike V2s, commandos have flamethrowers, making them a legitimate threat.
