Would it be mostly unarmed combat-type, or using weapons? Or elemental attacks, such as seen in Shinkenger, etc.

Some of it might be character direction, but it probably has something to do with the fact that he's nineteen, and this is his first big role.

As opposed to the guy who's playing Leo who has a lot of stage and other experience and looks relaxed and is having fun.

It was similar at the start of Ninninger where a lot of them seemed to be confused about how serious and earnestly they should get into things(excluding Takaharu who just can't fucking act) while the Dad and Grandpa had no trouble at all.

It seems like if you get a really good actor for a ranger in sentai it's more of a happy accident than anything since casting seems more concerned about meeting outside demands from sponsors, talent agencies, modelling groups, etc. Can't really blame them cause that's how the business works now, but you gotta hope the actors will eventually be able to get into it and give it their all.

Eh, if he turns out as good as Hikari did, I'd be really pleased because I liked that character a lot and thought the actor did a good job. Not everyone in sentai has to be the over-the-top hot-blooded guy or the goofball.

Even if you didn't like the character, the boy could act and got to shine in episodes like the one with their student-teacher. I never got the impression in interviews or other material that he wasn't enjoying himself or was just going through the motions like people are claiming with Elephun.

I'm not sure I agree with them, either, as we're only two episodes in. I'll have to watch some of the interviews and promotional stuff and see how he comes off, I guess.

Admittedly, I'm only six episodes in but so far it has been:
1: Intro episode(Daigo focus)
2: Team building episode(Nobuharu and Amy focus)
3: Souji episode
4: Ian episode
5: Souji and Ian episode
6: Chasing Ankydon episode(Amy and Ramirez focus)

Enough people have said it that there must be some truth to it, but when does it shift?

Well, the thing about IS is that less people watch their stuff than they do the main groups. On top of that, everyone from O-T, MFC, and GUIS just kind of stay silent on it all despite knowing how bad GekiKnight is.

In Boukenger BoukenBlack, Yellow, and Silver were actually tied to the plot whereas BoukenRed was just the leader of the team. Sure, he has his rivalry with Ryuuwon but the plot didn't center around him. The power-up was also shared between all six of them.

Daigo like a lot of red gets the most screen time and focus. That in and of itself isn't a bad thing. But Daigo is presented as absolutely perfect and everyone, bar one single character, sucks his cock constantly. It doesn't help that once he gets his powerup it's pretty much just him killing off all the monsters. And the ending where he literally pushes Amy off a ship to solo the boss doesn't help his case either.

The themes I've noticed are the Zyuoh Episode 2 MOTW looks like a Dart Board and there is a Poachers theme among the villains. Jag'd made a comment about the animals that fall behind the pack make easy prey. Poachers hunt game..get it? Its the blood game. Also Yamoto being the only human is like the animal tamer he is the only one with a Whip. IMO they focused way too much on that this time around. The base Zyuoh King set which comes with three cubes has an open price, with some retailers going as low as 5000 yen, whereas the base mecha is usually in the 7000 yen range. This is probably an overreaction to the weak Ninnin sales.

In the first two episodes. It started off strong and mostly ToQ was getting positive buzz. Again, less so than Zoo is getting even though they are pretty similar in quality 2 eps in. Again, coming off of Kyoryu people were not as enthusiastic about getting a new series, so the anticipation wasn't as extreme.
