Somewhat this. It's also that, so often, a show starts with a purposely unsympathetic protagonist, only to 'fix' him over the course of the series. The problem there is that sometimes the starting version was more novel or interesting than the more generic do-gooder we end up with at the end. It's kind of in the vein of the UNDERSTANDING thing - we have an entertaining MC who suddenly questions everything he's done and goes all touchy-feely.

It isn't so much just a "I want a stone cold killer" or "I want a raging bastard" as "I want a novel character that stays novel, rather than the writer wimping out and turning him back to something more run of the mill". There's all sorts of character development that can be done without making them just a completely different person, especially a more boring one.
