This is going to be a quick one, so every episode will be in one batch. However, here's the first episode directly from Mega to give everyone a taste of what's to come. It's not the prettiest BD out there, sadly, as I detailed yesterday in a previous thread, but it's still 0083 in HD, so take it for what it is. All that work I did two years ago on the R3 remastered version paid off here, as the dub and sub tracks were already up-to-date, and simply required a 48 frame shift to sync up with the BD. The two Japanese tracks now come from the BD.

https://mega.nz/#!wB4iQSqD!3sfQ6HidU90biHtXB5yEEcN10MFwgHPxEfdT3xOvOzE

Video: H.264 10bit CRF18
Audio: AAC -vbr 5 Japanese 2.0, 5.1, and English 2.0. English 2.0 track is downmixed back to its original stereo channels from the bullshit 5.1 upmix on the DVDs.
Subs: R1 DVD

>I could be wrong, but I don't remember using additional DNR on the movie, it was a DNR'd mess on the BD.

Well no, what I mean is that the filters you used for the movie caused massive color saturation/smearing and loss of detail. (I think I still have the comparison screenshots I used to point this out some time ago...) Granted it's the compilation movie so not much of value was lost but I want to be sure that you're not using the same filters for this since the results were honestly quite hideous.

Incidentally I've listened to the 2006 remix on one viewing. Even toggling around at times, I have to fight you on your assertions over the years that they rerecorded the dialogue. Maybe some lines here and there if the elements were damaged but the only changes I noticed were in the sound mix. Each time I checked the actual performances were identical. Besides which it seems really unlikely that this was completely rerecorded like the Mobile Suit Gundam trilogy as that would have been astronomically expensive at a time when they were already paying to remaster the visuals (part of why the trilogy got a new sound mix was due to pre-Dolby 2.0 anime film soundtracks being stored on hand-spliced magnetic tape).
>>
>>13885851
Really the only things X's cancellation affected were the loss of a proper space arc, Pala kinda getting thrown by the wayside, and the loss of Ennil's Gundam (and then probably Carris coming back as something that happened because of the cancellation?). Like with 0079, they still did the final arc more or less as intended.

A bluray would be nice... but X really isn't the prettiest series. At all.
>>
>>13886184
I ate ur mum's plum last night.
>>
>>13886290
Every show that can should get a bluray release at some point just so it can be preserved in better quality. A lot of shows that currently only have DVD rips suffer a lot in quality.
>>
>>13886290
>A bluray would be nice... but X really isn't the prettiest series. At all.
To be fair, you could say that of any cel anime to later be proven wrong. I used to think that Wing looked like crap until the blu-rays revealed some amazing details like these scorch marks on Epyon's verniers. Even ignoring cherry-picked frames such as this, the background paintings alone are gorgeous and the same thing will absolutely be true for X.
>>
>>13885423
That's all well and good, and thanks for the work, but

>>
>>13886264
But this isn't an assertion, it's documented on the 2006 boxset marketing. They brought the cast back together for it. Regardless, I don't see how you can consider the performances comparable.
>>
>>13886264
Why would the archival film masters not have an optical stereo track on the film?
>>
>>13886667
The only time animation ever gets an optical audio track on the film is the theatrical prints (if a theatrical release ever happens) and those aren't what's archived. The original negatives are the masters. They're produced before any audio is recorded.
>>

>>
>>13886837
shitty DVDs made from broadcast tapes or Laserdisc masters do a real disservice to so many shows. Blu Rays are really showing us how amazing the late 90's were, what a peak in animation and painting it was. It feels like we've barely recovered, though all animation transfering to digital pain and the economy of anime just imploding.

And it's not that I want to be some kinda film snob and talk about "the texture of the emulsion" but digital paint was supposed to make things easier, nowhere on the box did it say it had to make everything look like shit for 10 years.
>>
>>13886421
same thing happened with patlabor.
the us bd is way better.
>>
>>13886872
What about the scat

>>13886878
Blu-rays made from Laserdiscs are a thing. Look at the origianal Blu-ray for 1939's Gullivar's Travels.
>>
>>13886934
I mean in general of course. Aside from the kind of crooks and robbers that you'll never get rid of, BDs mostly made it so that you could no longer fool people with shitty upscales, forcing a lot of companies to actually put some effort into things, like re-cutting Star Trek TNG from the original negatives instead of just releasing the awful broadcast tapes again.

Why it is somehow acceptable to release SD quality material on a Blu-ray is beyond me, that just screams bad business practices.
>>
>>13886966
I think it would be better if early digital shows were just released as SD and not given Q-Tec upscales. Some shows had bad DVD's and needed the upgrade to MPEG4 codecs. I think someone once said FLCL was a show that needed this treatment, but instead we got two different upscales, one by Gainax and the other Funimation, and I hear neither are good but I've never seen the raw images compared.

Sometimes filmed anime get SD Blu-rays just because the owners don't give a shit, like God Mars.
>>
>>13887008
This is true. No good copy of the show really exists, as the DVDs could never keep up with the animation, and the BDs are horrific upscales from both regions. What we really need is a neutral upscale at BD bitrates, that takes advantage of the master tape's better color resolution as well.
>>
>>13887097
But that'll never happen because the market wants sharp unblurry images without any grain.

It's a shame they can't re-render it like Gurren Lagann, but they probably don't have the files anymore because Japan is retarded like that.
>>
>>13887097
I have to ask, is there any "best" for FLCL? I have the Kagura and Coalgirls (actually a remux that adds some stuff) releases and I consider Kagura to be a better encoder but he used the JP BD while Coalgirls used Funimation.

>>13887100
I think it's more of a very cynical effort to get people to buy the Blu-rays. Companies think no one will buy the discs if they are "not HD" so they stretch the picture to ungodly proportions and try to pass it off to people who don't know any better. Funimation's treatment of Cowboy Bebop seems to indicate this, because I'm very sure Gen thought that no-one would by a 1080i Blu-ray because muh p. In similar incidents, plastering the Orange Bricks onto BD while cancelling the Level sets and their utter disregard for bitrate on Lain prove that at the very least Funi is guilty.
>>
>>13887108
I think with Funi they are doing what people want, and not doing what is right, but I can hardly blame them for trying to keep the business afloat. If people complain about grainy 4:3 images and would rather have that cropped aquarel look that Funimation shat out instead, then sadly that's how it has to be. I've no doubt that Funimation knows they lose customers that way but they know that they are picking the way more populous side that thinks everything was made for widescreen and that a 4:3 image means things are missing.
>>
>>13886637
It sure fooled me then because I didn't notice ANY notable differences in the timing and delivery at all despite swapping tracks many times. My ears aren't even that bad, honestly. If anything the rhythm matched up but sounded more "warped" to me, as if they tried to upmix and remix the audio and somehow distorted it. I suppose the truth then is that the director MUST have emphasized matching beats above everything else (i.e. ADR, when animation and voices are typically done in separate studios) and to that end I guess they did a real bang up job despite the results sounding decidedly inorganic even to a deceived listener.

>>13886667
Because anime films DIDN'T use stereo as industry standard until the mid-eighties and especially not digital. They mastered the audio on magnetic film which required up to two dozen reels to run multiple layers of sound in full synchronization. Naturally, that all had to be compressed into an extremely lossy optical waveform to be played in theaters which had the additional side effect of noise from dirt and scratches.

So big deal, why not just use the original magnetic film? Because studios didn't keep master copies of anything other than the finalized optical waveform printed to film. This is why old anime films sound like garbage unless there has been extensive remastering. (For an example of a raw transfer, go watch the DVD version of Crusher Joe - it's awful!) At the time, Sunrise and Tomino opted to just redo everything from scratch for the MSG trilogy's theatrical re-release.
>>
>>13887227
At the end of episode 1, listen to Gato speaking to Galy, followed by Kou telling to him he's not going anywhere. In the original, Gato sounds commanding, and the voice is really in the chest, while the remix sounds like he's tired and reading a script. Similarly, Kou's delivery is fast but clear in the original, whereas the remix almost sounds like he tried to speak the line at twice the speed.
>>
>>13887259
I for one stopped listening to the remix after a few minutes because I thought it sounded like shit compared to the original.
>>
>>13887108
The "best" consumer source, to my knowledge, is actually the limited run of the compiled boxset that was released in R1. It features a newer encode over the original R1 DVD, though it might be slightly softer. The big problem with the DVD version was the breakup during high motion, high contrast scenes, and FLCL is FULL of them.
>>
>>13887227

Sailor Moon was mono through the end of the series in Sailor Stars

>>
>>13887259
I've already relented! Allow me to reiterate that I watched one version (5.1) all the way through on an isolated viewing and not both versions start to finish. I relied on arbitrary scenes for a quick comparison whenever it occurred to me that it didn't seem all too different from what I remembered. Obviously, I didn't sink any battleships with that method,. Not even when I went for major scenes like the nuking of Solomon. This is why your descriptions add up to my conclusion just a few moments ago that they used heavy ADR to replicate the original rather than letting it be wildly different for higher quality performances the way Tomino did things for the trilogy.
>>
>>13887313
I came to that conclusion too, sorry. It's definitely obvious that it was strict ADR.
>>
>>13885873
I'm pretty sure he needs to replace it with this version.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rA40-JX5ff8
>>
>>13887297
I'll look into this. I don't think anyone has done anything with any DVD versions of FLCL in a long time, the catalog of encodes of them on AB seem to indicate this. My video encoding skills are pretty weak honestly, and my hardware is poor so I tend to stick with remuxes for the small output of anime stuff I've worked on. x264 runs really slow when encoding on my shockingly poor laptop (HP from Wal-mart in 2010) and it's a pain because I don't want to speed it up and ruin everything.

>>13886535
They have to, if they want to give the US Gundam market some lipservice sooner or later.
>>
>>13887315
Yeah, I admit that it fooled me pretty hard. For what it is worth, it's a fair replication since it wasn't distracting enough all on its own pace (the sound effects are much worse) but it's also not that I didn't notice that anything was off about it at times. I just naturally took it as the levels being tampered since the delivery was superficially identical, like maybe they didn't have the original elements and had to remix some lines after isolating them from the BGM and effects.
>>
>>13887338
If you want to get really insane, you could lay the chroma channels from the BD version beneath the luma of the DVD, and meet them at 720p, that way you get the color advantages of the upscale.

I'm kinda getting through Victory in big chunks, since the discs are much more to tackle (7 eps each), whereas 0083 is obviously much shorter. It is moving along, don't worry about it, but I'd like to have 0083 out by sometime in the next two weeks. >>
>>13889252
It's not just possible, The Hateful Eight's score was composed by Ennio Morricone himself. But Tarantino being Tarantino, he obviously wouldn't settle for that alone and lifted Morricone music from other soundtracks as well.

Conjecture on ADC says the ultimate R1 has superior picture, but skimming it, I still see noticeable artifacting in fast scenes.

FFmpeg claim's their new native AAC encoder is mature enough to match FDK. I don't know if that code has been pushed into any stable releases yet. Non-free codecs really are a pain in the ass when it comes to deciding which implementation to use, Jesus. I'd like Opus to go somewhere but it looks like it's stuck to use in webm's, even if Youtube uses it in certain videos. I just realzied you were talking about the idea of switching to qaac and not FDK. My mind is elsewhere. Herkz once said to use qaac when Nyaa had a chat but Herkz is also fucking retarded.

>>13890692
That's an idea. Would waifu2x suffice as an upscaler? I used it for two of my wallpapers (one seen here) and it seemed to work nice. I have a locally downloaded version, and there are versions made for both Avisynth and Vapoursynth. Would the final edit have to be in a non-linear editor?
I once had an idea of doing something like this with the American Kite Blu-ray.
>>
>>13893053
(cont.)
The Kite Blu-ray is half gorgeous 35mm scanned film and the rest of it is a dog-shit upscale. Kentai proved that a much simpler upscale proved to be better than whatever they did.
If someone really wanted to go batshit they could edit the sex scenes back into it. I happen to have a lossless audio source from the JP BD (eww) that I could edit to. Too ambitious for one man but it's an idea. Maybe when I have a new PC.
>>
>>13893053
Waifu2x is slow as fuck, no? Nnedi3 is probably ideal. As for an NLE, no, if your sources are frame-identical, you could theoretically do it all with trim commands.

I'm curious if that rent tint was intentional for the remaster or they simply didn't bother to correct it. The R1 looks NOTHING like that (that's putting aside that it's an older master, it still looks like the rest of the show). Pic related.

Hey RX, I'm pretty new to all this BD stuff and have just started watching some gendums with my super gendum-loving friends. Is there a place with links to like, all of your uploads or w/e? Would be a pleasant surprise for said friends, as we're on like episode 3 of 0083 in only 480p.

RX, how do you personally convert DTS-MA and TrueHD to FLAC? I have some raw audio files in those formats taken from a some BD's (that I don't have) and the DTS-MA FLAC file ballooned in size and was coded as 24bit FLAC when the source file is 16bit in FFmpeg. Also the TrueHD file was from a Funimation BD and I read they just bloated their TrueHD files to 24bit when it is only 16bit's of information.

>>
>>13894284
This. I use a FLAC intermediary anyway since these discs use the antiquated method of encoding every episode in one file. I rip the whole file to FLAC in both stereo and surround, then load the audio in avisynth so that my episode trim commands also cut the audio. That in turn, is fed to ffmpeg.

that is called haloing. an artifact when you oversharpen. that is not fine detail.

Is there a technical reason why OZC's stuff is always so dark?
>>
>>13898347
I think it's less his being dark, but [EG] apply filters to make things brighter. He showed in the last thread what he wanted his filters to do with 0083 and making it brighter was part of it. The actual transfer is very dark in a few places, so I think making it brighter here overall works to it's advantage

I can't speak for everything else though, and I might be mis-remembering, but I think that's the case here.

Ah that's what I was wondering most. Thanks for answering.
>>
>>13898347
In this case especially, Bandai just mastered 0083 that way on purpose. The darkness on a lot of his encodes aren't actually because "lolfilters" like we typically dilute complaints about him into but instead partly because Bandai usually hires the same lazy hacks to do their remastering. OZC's actual encoding practices are better likened to being straight source rips with noise reduction. Incidentally, it's EG encodes that use more drastic filtering to counteract such pitfalls with the official source.

>>13897667
OZC took all his work offline because he wants people to buy the blurays.

His mom works at Sunrise.

Here is what I want to know OZC: are you going to reupload your work when those blurays are OOP in a few years?
>>
>>13898536
Of course he won't. It only adds to his sense of smug self-satisfaction that there are some people who can't download his stuff, especially when there are no good alternatives for that particular anime available. It makes him feel important.
>>
>>13898536
That's insanely pointless when people have been uploading his stuff all over trackers for years.
>>
Man, Nyaa is so fucked. I've been trying to download the EG Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star releases for the last 2 days and the downloads have now both completely stopped at around 80%.
>>
>>13898536

People should buy the things they download because it isn't available hwre when it becomes available here.
>>
>>13898536
So somebody whose work nobody claims to like anyway ceases distribution and nobody reuploads it as a result of his low market value.

No, this is not an affront worthy of persistent, impotent rage. That is cause and effect at work. If this had anything to do with G-Reco in particular (which he pulled aggravatingly soon after completing), it may also be in part because he and the show were both unpopular enough that nobody kept up to date with his releases.

You're aware that OZC oversharpened on top of the already edge enhanced BD, right? It's true that mine appears softer, but let's not pretend his is actually sharper. I did no form of noise reduction on this, and only removed the extra halos on the BD.

This is mine. Yes, it's perceptually softer than the others, but doesn't have the ugly halos. OZC actually did an okay job on this one, since he didn't seem to use any DNR, and the encode itself is generous in bitrate (our file sizes are very close), but it's effort expended in the most unhelpful manner.

>>
>>13908879
>that's the rules.
[citation needed]
>>
>>13908879
Here are my suggestions for how to deal with perceived rule breaking:

1) Report and then ignore. Yeah, I know. "LOL you think there are mods on /m/!" or whatever but if they get spammed with enough report flags then they'll step in just to cut the noise. If that's the kind of thing that's so unlikely that you can't be bothered to try then I posit that the only gainful reason to micromanage an infraction is because you find gratification in punishing others.

2) Skip to phase 2 and ignore it. Ask yourself how much positive influence your input will really have on public discourse and if it won't then decide against investing emotionally in "putting that one asshole in his place" over something silly.

That's what I think. Take it or leave it but in my opinion, I think strategies like that have a better outcome toward seizing control over outside influences on your everyday life than impotently policing individual behavior on 4chan does. Because the way things have played out so far, I don't think you're any more in control of this scenario than the rest of us else are.
>>
>>13885851
I would want to see X in BD because it's so damn dark in the releases we have.
>>
>>13909305
Also, all the rips of X seem to have slightly offer audio.
>>
>>13908152
I don't appreciate that the people here have been unkind to you; however, it probably is better for your sake to stay away from 4chan with those kinds of feelings just because the reactions are bound be unsympathetic.

Do yourself a favor and take a break. If you want to work on it, be my guest, but don't put yourself at personal/emotional/psychological risk for /m/'s sake. We all have things to take care of in our lives, which is the very reason I'm quitting once Victory and 0083 are done, so don't apologize for your own issues in life. Take a break, do what you need to do, and come back only if you feel like it.

>>13908152

Oh shit man. I didn't look further into your thread because I didn't want to raise my hype levels until the project was nearing completion. I'm so very sorry about this. Don't worry about Zeta or other /m/ nonsense. While I personally appreciate the effort, you've got to take care of yourself and your family problems first. All the best in sorting things out.
