Gainax has had some strange projects in the past, but I think this tops them all.

One of them was that Nagano had originally planned to direct a 30 minute FSS OVA (he was also music director), animated by Gainax and with "support" from Anno (maybe as a co-director?) in 1988. There would also be a running commentary on various FSS resin kits by Nagano as part of the bonus features. Whole thing was supposed to be sold for 9800 yen. But the project was aborted for unknown reasons.

This has got to go in the folder of greatest dead projects along with Oshii and Miyazaki's Anchor and Tomino's Dunbine movie.

Its not all that surprising when you consider Nagano's wife is a VA on a lot of the older Gainax shows and OVAs.

Nagano and Anno collaboration though... throw in Ikuni and we would get something transcendental. Everyone from that 80s generation of Otaku creators is so closely connected.

>Its not all that surprising when you consider Nagano's wife is a VA on a lot of the older Gainax shows and OVAs.

Could've sworn it was just Gunbuster and a cameo in Eva. Hardly a strong connection.
>>
>>13885231
VA-director connections were a big thing back in the day. Those stories you hear about Anno confessing to Nadia's VA and making advances towards Misato's VA have some truth to them. Kawamura is also very good friends with Megumi Hayabashira (Rei's VA and Anno's go-to VA).
>>
What's the deal with FFS and the creator anyway? I mean just in general? I read the old (old OLD) scanlations a while back and loved it because the only previous mecha thing I'd ever seen was Gundam and western stuff and holy shit everything about it ruled hard. Every so often I check back in to see if more stuff got scanlated and it seems like rumours and apocrypha just swarm around this series. More stuff is coming soon! But it isn't because the creator is a pariah who fucked everyone who gave him a chance! But it isn't true because he did a thing with Anno! But no he's a prima-donna and there'll never be any stuff again! But he's doing a totally-not-FFS-series next year! Just forum rumours out the ass.

So what's the deal?

No one really knows. Hell, the Gothicmade never got a home video release somehow. Maybe he spends all his free time worshipping his wife, or something.

With Shirow, at least people have a concrete idea of what happened, but Nagano is somehow both around and not there.
>>
>>13887388

Nagano does as he pleases with his shit. It is beyond the understanding of most of us, and it is best kept that way.
>>
>>13887411
>With Shirow, at least people have a concrete idea of what happened

I'm not even sure about that. I've never heard anything confirming those earthquake rumors. If anything, the progression from drawing lesbian female orgies to horsefucking within 10 years isn't really that much of a jump, especially when you already have enough money to do whatever you want.

Just look at Urushihara; he was huge in the 80's and what does he do with all his free time now? Draw porn in monthly magazines.
>>
>>13887931
Okay, that's a fair point. What about Mikimoto, though? For some reason he still hasn't finished Macross: The First and procrastinates on Ecole Du Ciel.
>>
>>13885231
Gunbuster is the most significant Gainax creation.
>>
>>13887388
Nobody really knows. Nagano. in general, is a reclusive guy nowadays.

Doesn't help that nobody is translating FSS shit.
>>
>>13887961
He's working on that new Attack on Titan ripoff series as a character designer. He doesn't own his own franchises like Nagano and Shirow, so I guess he still has to do stints like this to pay the bills.

Speaking of recluses, what the hell happened to Mitsuo Iso? He did a ton of animation then directed his own TV series (Dennou Coil) and then just disappeared off the face of the Earth. Did it bomb badly enough to destroy his career?
>>
>>13888109
I FUCKING KNEW IT THERE WAS A REASON FOR IT TO LOOK 80's
>>
>>13888109
Oh yeah, forgot about that.

>>13888118
On a happier note, while Kogawa largely disappeared from the public eye sometime after Tekkaman Blade, he still does some animation work on occasion. Even drew a new Ideon art spread for a con.
>>
>>13888118
Rumor has it he got in a huge fight with Mitsuo Iso and many other well-reputed animators during DC's production because he was even more of a perfectionist animator than Miyazaki and wasn't satisfied with anyone's output. Everyone working on it grew to resent him and word of his tyranny spread fast among the anime industry, turning him into a black sheep of sorts so he had to animate using various pen-names from then on.
>>
>>13888156
>Mitsuo Iso

Takeshi Honda, I mean. Who is coincidentally the AD of the newest Rebuild movie.

I've always been under the impression that the people who draw monthly doujins are all top-tier animators who do that sort of thing in their free time.

For example, I'm 100% certain that "Hyoco Road" is Sushio.
>>

9800 yen.
For 30 minutes.
Fuuuck that. Poor Japanese buyers are so mistreated by the industry, and apparently alway have been.
I mean sure it was probably a LaserDisc and those were alway kinda pricey, but Jesus.
>>
>>13887931
It's not Urushihara's fault that the world can't handle shiny women and huge shoulderpads anymore.

I've got a plan, though. We scrape together $30 million and pay Urushihara, Obari, and some studio to produce a 36-episode anime about a group of high-powered European and American businesswomen slash rollerderby rivals circa the early- to mid-80s who are magically transported to a medieval fantasy land. With robots.
>>
>>13888156
Being an asshole perfectionist is the definition of Animation Director though, without it you get stuff like IBO.
I'm sure animators were having fun while doing it, but it looks like shit and reflected on sales and reception, and it's not even a matter of budget since it probably costed like any other Gundam series.
>>
>>13887388
That's the case with literally any big name in the anime industry though. Even people who are as popular as Anno and Tomino are shrouded in all kinds if rumors and such.

>Gainax

FSS is something that looks like it was made to be animated by Studio Ghibli. They're probably the only studio in existence that can match Nagano's autistic details.

In an ideal world, Nagano would have joined Ghibli and made a whole animated adaptation of FSS by now. But then again, a lot of things would be different if Nagano weren't so overprotective of his manga.

I love the Sunrise movie, but it doesn't look or feel anything like the manga. Just another run-of-the-mill 80's OVA, but then again, Nagano wasn't involved with it.

>I love the Sunrise movie, but it doesn't look or feel anything like the manga. Just another run-of-the-mill 80's OVA, but then again, Nagano wasn't involved with it.

Character designs aside, I thought the old OVA did a good job matching Nagano's original drawings. It was made at a time when there were only 1 or 2 volumes of FSS out in the late 80's, and so a lot of it still looked like a more detailed L-Gaim. I think Artmic would have been the most ideal option to animate it at the time, look at how wonderfully they pulled off Dragon's Heaven.

Only recently has FSS started to look rather Ghibli, with the more simplified character designs and cleaner, less shaded details. Animation aside, Gothicmade looks a lot like a Ghibli movie.

>IBO
>fun
I think it has to start at the storyboards. That's probably one of the huge downfalls. Guy in charge probably reads the script, gets bored, designates 400 talking scenes and every other week 150 action shots. Animators see talking heads so they spend time working on the close shots that will only need 5 frames, background characters are left to Koreans. Story board (bored) guy can't into choreography so he just shows a few different angles because they're in space, who cares. Mobile suits kind of boost towards and away from each other, sometimes locking swords but never doing damage. Fights are weak and ineffectual, animators are bored animating it so they put in no effort. Then you get something hype like "this part: Mika STABS THIS MOTHER AND RIDES HIS MOBILE SUIT LIKE A SURFBOARD TO HELL, WHILE BURNING UP IN RE-ENTRY" and they get excited and put in more effort.

Alternative theory: Gravity greatly improves battles, fuck off spacenoids. Seriously though melee doesn't work in space and there is little cover for projectile protection. What an awful, awful choice. It could have easily been about roaming Mars and taking badass merc jobs or fighting in/around colonies on the way to Earth (a place with even more gravity). Build Fighters Try had better choreography than this and that's saying quite a lot.

Where did you find out about this? This actually sounds interesting.
>>
>>13889963
Tomino didn't specify Dunbine, but he's working on a fantasy mecha movie.

Nagano's ego probably sunk the project

More like join Ghibli and have a fight to the death with Miyazaki. The clash of egos would be nuclear levels.
>>
>>13890025
But that would make it even better! Nagano can kill Miyazaki before the old fart becomes too popular and works Yoshifumi Kondo to death, and if Nagano dies in the process the FSS license goes to someone who actually wants to use it. It's a win-win situation.

Oh, never mind then. I know which project you're talking about but did it get cancelled or something? I don't understand why OP says it's a dead project

Not OP, but I do remember Tomino planned a Dunbine movie in the mid 90's, and Nagano was supposed to be involved. His Phantom designs from FSS were originally meant to be some Aura Battlers, but the project died so he changed them into MH.

Sauce was from something 5 years ago that I've forgotten about.

I feel so god damn sorry for jp anime fans some times.

Of course other times I think "no, you let it get this way".

But mainly I feel sorry for them because what exactly could they have done?
