It's not in the animatrix, but further in the lore it's said that dark sun wasn't supposed to be permanent, that it was a temporary thing that would dissipate after a given time once the war with the machines was finished.

Then, after humanity lost the big one, they said "fuck it" and made a dark sun pt. II that not only increased the effect of the original dark sun but also made it permanent (sorta, after the centuries it's been up, the end of Revolutions implies that it's slowly going away still)

It's psychologically jarring because the pilot is still alive after that scene. Sure he's going to bleed out in minutes if the tentacles don't rip him apart first, but as >>13890895 stated, it's the slow and deliberate fashion of how the robots opened up and pulled the pilot out and didn't care his limbs were still clamped into the mech. You watch that scene and instinctively go to grab your own limbs to make sure they're still there.


On an interesting side note for the director's commentary, the director compared that scene to how one would shell a lobster.

The one that really got me recently was the scene in the last Hunger Games movie where they're running through a subway station and all the lights have been replaced with disintegration rays (rapid dessication rays in the book) that activate randomly. Like, let's meditate on this for a second: this is America, some indeterminate amount of time in the future. Weapons technology has advanced to the point where not only can they create something like that (and all the other fucked up weapons you see in that movie), but to where they can rapidly replace existing infrastructure with booby traps. That is to say, that their weapons are so effective that they're confident enough to make surviving them a game. They could have killed the group immediately by just activating all of the lights at once, but they gave them the hope of surviving by just having them come on randomly.

Brutal as fuck. It was on my mind for days.
