Currently acquiring 0083. I've begun working on the color correction for it since it is, in fact, the now 10 year old 2006 transfer. The detail is *still* bad in the shadows, and it's simultaneously sad yet fascinating to see that this transfer has already aged so poorly. It makes little sense to me that Sunrise saw fit to redo the 2006 Outlaw Star transfer, but not this one. On the bright side, it has a decent amount of grain on it, and the edge enhancement is minimal.

As usual, I'm running some examples past you guys to see if the filtering is preferable. Let's start with the unfiltered BDMV.

Delaz's shading here presents a good opportunity to see how the luma curve I'm applying works. This is with a photoshop curve (applied in AVS) and halo removal, plus some dithering to compensate for the shadow lift.

A double-exposure highlight from an explosion gives me an easy way to gauge where the white level can be boosted too. It's not quite as easy as simply maxing out the histogram (it's still below 255, as shown in the picture), because many other shots suffer when you put it this high, but it helps a lot.

Filtered version. The white point is significantly higher, but still not maxed out.

There are unfortunately many dark shots like this that are almost completely invisible in the BDMV.

I can't recover it, but the perceptual contrast helps out a lot, in my opinion.

Fuck. I don't want to think about how badly 0080 has aged.

In my dream world this would be cause for Sunrise to adapt Rebellion but obviously that ain't gonna happen.

>>13880637
You're doing a pretty great job with what you have.
>>
>>13880738
Don't take my wording literally. 0080 does not yet exist in HD, so any transfer we see will be fresh. 0083 was Sunrise's first HD transfer (to our knowledge at least) and it shows.

>10 year old 2006 transfer

Fuck you, that's not possible.

Hold me, /m/, I 'm scared.
>>
>>13880805
It's also how long I've been encoding. It begins and ends with 0083.

Always gotta check out the competition. Here's OZC. He left the grain in, to his credit. It's not his fault the grain is actually kind of a muddy mess in this Blu-ray. The DNR wasn't too robust (but it's not as bad as Victory at least).

This is the BDMV. Looks like he sharpened it a little bit, which I kind of understand, since this is pretty soft for 35mm, but there's already edge enhancement on the image, so the result is nasty.

This is my current filter chain. I've revised the luma curve a bit more (third time's a charm?), but there are still shots that unfortunately are going to look washed out. It's impossible to correct all of them without scene-by-scene correction, but again, this should be a lot more pleasing.

Because of the grain issues mentioned above, and because of the extreme shadow lifting I'm doing here, I'm debating a very light DNR.

I like this one. Her hair looks great in it.

Yeah, but the rest of the stuff has this weird pastel effect.

WHEN'S RETIREMENT
>>
>>13882049
Whatever you do is fine by me but just please don't filter this all the way to Smudgey Town like you did the compilation movie.
>>
>>13882598
I could be wrong, but I don't remember using additional DNR on the movie, it was a DNR'd mess on the BD.

RX782 is the best. Why isn't there someone sucking this guy's dick?
>>
>>13884113
He's married or in some sort of long-term relationship, fampai.
>>
>>13884127
The latter.

>>13880605
Man, I just want to thank you on the account of not being OZC alone.

Thank you.
>>
>>13884113
Why don't you do it?

How many remasters made for DVD are in HD? When did they start making them? What DVD HD remasters would still look good today, and how can you tell one has aged poorly?

Also, is there any way to tell if an early 2000's anime was produced in HD. Supposedly GITS SAC was, and I just wanted to know about more.

Also fuck this site, captchas fuckup with my agent spoofer. I'm feeding you to Jim's pigs, Hiroyuki.

It's just a matter of speech. It's like when people saying early 2000s CGI hasn't aged well. This transfer is not nearly as well defined in the shadows like most of Bandai Visual's other HD-sourced releases. I have no idea what resolution SAC was mastered at... I remember reading from a dubious (now lost) source in the mid 2000s that it was mastered to some anamorphic 1024x768 resolution, but nothing has substantiated that.

As far as knowing which DVDs were mastered in HD, they usually make it their business to flaunt it. 0083 flaunted it on the 2006 5.1ch boxset. With digital stuff, if it's pre-2006, there's a high chance it's SD, with some outliers (Planetes comes to mind, which aired in 1080i in 2003). Some lesser theatrical stuff is sub-HD, with seemingly only Ghibli really possessing the tech to pull off true high res digital work in the early 2000s. Check out the BDs for Spirited Away and The Cat Returns. They're both from 2002 and look sharp as fuck, with beautifully natural line work.

RX can never retire. Every time he thinks he's free Bandai pulls him back in for one final job.
