I'm making my way through watching Gundam for the first time.

I've watched everything produced before Turn A except for Wing, Victory, X, and F91. I wanted to wait to watch everything made before it to get the full experience, but Victory has been kind of a slog so far.

How much will I miss out on by skipping the 90's Gundam shows?
>>
Most of the Gundam shows are self-contained.
>>
>>13879393
Well, you can go ahead and watch it really.
You'll only miss a few references here and there (Corin's split second flashback).

Though if you're going to watch it, do watch it with the official subs that's already available.
>>
>>13879393
Not much. Most of Turn-A's references are from UC. There's a very little of G Gundam in there, too.
>>
Just search for Diana/Kihel porn or something. Turn A isn't worth watching.
>>
>>13879437
The fact that there's decent porn of those two is amazing.
>>
>>13879393
>You can't watch Turn A without having seen every single fucking Gundam that came before it!
I hate this meme

It's not like Unicorn or CCA which are direct continuations of everything that came before them. Turn A's story is entirely self-contained.
>>
>>13879449
I'm well aware it's self-contained, but I wanted to wait before seeing everything else made prior, just so I can see references.

Nothing against the shows I'm skipping (I'll go back to them later) but I'm not particularly in the mood to go through any of them.
>>
>>13879727
The references are just clips of previous shows and the occasional cameo here or there. They don't matter to the story at hand, because the characters don't know what those things are.

The only (barely) story-related reference is Corin seeing Wing Gundam for a split second in a flashback (which means he's probably from the After Colony era), but any other Gundam in its place would be the same.
>>
>>13879393
i enjoyed watching it in production order.
though i have a few notes:
Wing is pretty bad at times due to character and duologue issues,it's aesthetics and background story are neat.
G is tons of fun but not really a gundam. It's more of an imagawa show highly recomended.
X is also pretty good as well
F91 you can watch in an afternoon.
>>
>>13879393
>How much will I miss out on by skipping the 90's Gundam shows?
Honestly nothing at all. Victory at least lets you mentally fill in the blank of why everything is as it is at the start of Turn A, but it's not essential.

F91 isn't essential either, but I'd suggest watching it anyway because it's so damn pretty.

On a side note, I would say that Turn A feels like a lot of the ideas/themes Tomino had for F91 and Victory properly reaching fruition.
>>
>>13879393
>I've watched everything produced before Turn A
>except for Wing, Victory, X, and F91
So you haven't seen most of the things produced before Turn A
>>
Turn A is literally self-contained in which the references to previous shows are just nominal, the narrative even refers those eras as dark history. It did not make the mistake of demanding the viewer to be fully knowledgeable to every detail of the franchise, they just say these were the distance pasts, and human made huge mistakes in general, so as long as you have watched some Gundam or even none you can still relate to it.

Ironically, the comedy-centric GBF actually requires knowing all the memes from respective series to fully enjoy.

>what is 0079, Z, ZZ, CCA, and the UC OVAs

>>13879811
G is the only 90s-era Gundam I finished so far, and in a lot of ways it's one of my favorites. Wing is dumb but it's just my kind of dumb. I'm still really early in to it. And X I watched maybe 1/4 of a long time ago, back before I was really "into" Gundam.
>>
>>13879437
>Diana/Kihel porn
>Not Loran porn
>>
>>13879908
Three series and a movie
OVAs don't count because they're side stories and all pretty bad.
You haven't seen three series and a movie. You've only seen half of the the Gundam series made before Turn A.
Having said that, if you liked G and don't like Victory, you should probably skip Turn A because it'll most likely bore you.
>>
>>13879949
It's not that I dislike Victory. I want to finish it, but it's a tad on the difficult side. I can handle slow shows, but there's something about Victory that hasn't quite clicked with me yet.

I don't really plan on skipping anything, but I was hoping to see I could break production order a tad.
>>
>>13879949
>0080
>bad

>>13879908
>UC OVAs
>produced before Turn-A
>>
>>13879976

> UC OVAs
> Produced before Turn-A

Unless you come from some kind of parallel universe, then 0080, 0083 and 08th MS Team were all produced before Turn-A.
>>
>>13880001
I was memeing senpai. Unicorn was alternatively titled as UC. So UC OVAs.
>>
>>13879974
Had same feels OP. I stuck it out with Victory and in hindsight it felt worthwhile. Watched Turn A next, and it was awesome.

The references in Turn A that i felt really satisfied to "get" were the ones involving 0079, Z(?), and especially ZZ.

Maybe the bigger question would be whether you want to watch X before Turn A. I'm neariing the end of it and feeling pretty lukewarm... definitely don't like it as much as Victory. The mechs look like fucking Transformers and the characters are boring as fuck, and coming off the excellent art of Turn A, I think X is suffering even more in comparison.

>Zeta references
There were? I only remember stuff from or derived from 0079 and ZZ tech.
>>
>>13880764
>>ZZ tech

It wasn't just tech. There was a visual gag ripped straight from ZZ. That fat soldier guys face got zoomed in on too much on a mobile suit camera.
>>
>>13880781
ooooh god i forgot about that one. laughed my ass off at it both times.

ZZ's actual comedic value is deeply underrated IMO (even if it's often mentioned that it's meant to be lighthearted).
>>
>>13879393
>except for Wing, Victory, X, and F91
Wing is the most related of those to Turn A, then X. All of them are referenced to some extent, but none are required. The only ones I would call required are 0079, Z, ZZ but you need to watch them all to catch every minor thing
>>
>>13879908
> Wing is dumb but it's just my kind of dumb.
that sounds like a fair rating. i've been wondering if i should give it a whirl. haven't watched 00 though, so i'd probably just watch it instead.

also haven't tried g-reco or IBO.
>>
>>13879393
Just watch it, as long as you've seen 0079, Turn-A is perfectly understandable.
>>
OP here.

>>13880840
I feel the same way. I went in thinking I was gonna groan at ZZ, but I laughed at it a lot more than I thought I would. I like the UC triolgy roughly equally, but ZZ has a level of fun that made me enjoy it.

>>13880852
00 was one of the first AUs I finished. Having started Wing, they're very similar. It's flawed and I had fun picking it apart, but it was fun if nothing else.

From an outsider's point of view, I think IBO is pretty great. A lot of casuals seem to like it (which has value in and of itself), but it fails to meet some expectations as a Gundam show. Personally I think the MS designs are 10/10 though.

Why did Sochie get so shafted throughout Turn A? Was the writer pissed off at the voice actress or something? What a conga line of trauma, jesus.

Sochie is the first tsundere I found tolerable and she gets cucked by everybody in the end.

TOMINOOOO!!!
>>
>>13885187

It's kinda the reason I like Sochie as a character. She suffered great loss because of the Moonrace which makes her hatred towards them more sympathetic.
>>
>>13885187

Kihel probably has it worse during the show, since not only is her father also killed and her mother also driven insane but she's dropped in to an almost alien situation and has to pretend to be Dianna in a place where any slip up would probably sentence her to a pretty bad fate and is then used as or gives herself up as bait frequently after that point to try and keep things going. The worst that happened to Sochie after her parents (and putting aside the ending which is controversial) was that a guy she was just starting to get to know and like died, and frankly, Kihel's situation is worse than that in my opinion.

Sochie does get a bad deal, but I wouldn't say it was so bad that it felt mean spirited or extraordinary compared to the entire rest of the cast. She was just the most immature member of the cast (discounting maybe Poe or someone) at the beginning as well as one of the youngest and so had to go through more shit to come out the end of the show as a better all round person. And it makes her a great character to boot.
>>
>>13885306
Even all the people who were definitely guilty of high treason and other war crimes get a happy ending. The last we see of Sochie is her screaming at a lake.
>>
>>13885187
>>13885313

It's kind of beautiful in a story-telling way. You don't get a happy ending even if you "deserve" it.

Oh, well...Sochie was still young and had her whole life ahead of her. Had the story followed her more she would probably get over Loran and find a nice guy. Maybe even take a trip to the moon to see Kihel again.
