When you think about it... How exactly do mecha in general store their energy?

I know Xabungle uses regular gas so they probably have tanks somewhere. Gundam have magic reactors so there's hydrogen/whtever they use stashed somehwere.

But where exactly? Having the tanks nearby the cockpit seems suicidal. External tanks are safer in this regard but even more of an easy target. This seems like a complicated issue for mecha engineers;

Union Flag from Gundam 00 stored the hydrogen for its plasma jet by integrating the hydrogen (in molecular level) inside its frame.
And it's not one-off idea. A blurb about Rayleonard in Armored Core For Answer loading screen also mentioned something about Rayleonard being to first to store hydrogen in similar way.
I suspect it's based on concept we have here in real life, although of course we haven't found a way to realize it yet.

As far as I know excess particles from the fusion. Basically the minovsky reactor makes heat to power up the MS and the byproduct is used for the sabers and such.
