You draw mecha.

Learn the basics of art, then just copy stuff you like to get the overall feel of it. Eventually you'll be capable of drawing your own shit using the elements you copied. It helps if you know something about engineering as well but obviously that's no essential.

learn to draw boxes. drawing a lot of transformers really helps

no need understanding for psychic or any no-fun elements like 3 cubism law or whatever do you call it.

as long it's looks cool, you're good to go
>>
>>13856823
Yeah, boxes. Boxes are important.

But I would say that there are 2 big elements to designing mecha, one is knowledge of perspective and the other is a building up a visual library. Knowing perspective lets you know how to draw something, but having a visual library of mechanical parts in your mind helps you to come up with designs that don't look derivative. You pretty much have to look and draw lots of different things to build your own library. Don't just limit yourself to drawing Mecha, all the best mechanical designers from the 80's were from other backgrounds like fashion or industrial design.

what part of draw a lot of transformers you don't understand
>>
To draw cartoon mecha, you first need to learn to draw vehicles and machinery and human beings from life and then you combine what you have learnt from drawing these things and draw the goddamn mecha.
>>
>>13857142
I don't like transformers.
>>
>>13857146
Pretty much this.

>>13857150
I don't either, but the point of it if I'm reading it all right is that the guy supposes that through drawing mostly simpler shapes in perspective (which a lot of older transformers are) you will gain a better fundamental understanding of perspective, construction etc. to draw machines you like more.
>>
>>13857150
well your loss.
the reason why i don't recommend you to draw mazinger and friends because they're tubes.

box-y robots helps you understand the basic of perspective
>>
>>13857160
Tubes may well begin their lives as squares. If OP doesn't want boxes that's fine. Read this book; it explains it all in simple, concise, and applicable terms.

If you don't want to draw transformers just draw boxes stacked to roughly robot shapes. The important part here is boxes and understanding perspective.

>>

But the furry community never draws any mechas, they just draw dragon people with big dicks. :(
>>
>>13857252
Yes, I do.
>>
>>13857610
Here's a secret: some furry artists who take commissions aren't furries.

Furries have fucktons of money. God knows why, but they do. Artists or people with drawing ability who want a quick buck can legit pay their rent on occasion simply by charging furries to draw their weird OCs and shit. Furries can and will pay out the ass to get their stuff drawn and even if you aren't a furry you can make full use of their demand for art/lack of talent to make bank.

I don't have it now but there's actually a diagram of how not to get fucked by overexcited furry customers on Paypal, e.g. how not to get your money frozen because your customer wrote something inappropriate and stupid.

If you commissioned one of them to do it you could maybe make it happen. IMO though you're a fag for not learning to do it yourself.
>>
>>13857610
They have truckloads of artists who get a lot of practice because furries are constantly paying them for commissions, which means many of the highest-quality English-speaking artists are furries or at least comfortable with furries.

op, it helps to draw your designs from many angles, it helps to make the form of your mech more concrete, instead of just drawing it from a front or profile view, try a 3 quarter view. Like some other anons said, practice boxes, perspective, and form. After all that is when you add detail and pazaz and shit. Personally I find Ebikawa's art very helpful. He has a great grasp of perspective, shape and form, and also knows how to warp it while keeping proper and consistent. Hope you post some more work op, would look forward to see your progress.

Make it a point to draw something every day, even if it's something basic you can scribble in five minutes on a lazy day. You have to want to improve to actually improve. The rest just comes with lots of time and patience and figuring out what you can do better next time.
Practice practice practice, draw different things, and never give up!

I've been pretty much exclusively drawing mecha whenever I get the chance. I really just tried to copy artists I like (Masami Obari, Masahito Yamashita, etc.).

There's nothing wrong with copying, as long as you understand what you're doing each part of the way. What I mean by that is don't focus on just replicating what you see, think about why the original artist drew things the way they did.

Drawing basic figured over some of Obari's work for example was a good way to get a feel for the kind of proportions / angles I wanted to shoot for. Eventually after a lot of studying I began to absorb some of the same design sense. I'm still not at the level I aspire to reach yet, but I've definitely made progress in the past couple years.

As cool as mechas are, they're just a very, very small subset of all designs. Mechas require knowledge of the human form and the ability to visualize things in terms of geometry rather than symbols.

Both of those are pretty fundamental to drawing in general, so the best way to learn how to draw mechas is really pretty much just learning to draw in general. Start by drawing basic geometric objects, upgrade to more and more complex ones, figure out how to break down real-life forms into geometry, gradually scale into breaking down more and more complicated organic objects until you're about at the same level of complexity as a human being, and then buy human anatomy books and learn how human anatomy works.

Doing schematic sketches of mechanical thingies like engines and sparkplugs and whatever is also pretty helpful.

Don't be afraid of drawing like shit initially, but understand the commitment you're making when you want to learn to draw. This is a years-long process, in the same way that going from a scrawny kid to a bulky bodybuilder is also a long-term process rather than an individual decision. If you want to get good at drawing, you have to make it part of your identity and lifestyle. Not everybody sticks through with it long enough to see the gains start to appear.

>>13856823
Once you have a design, making a good pose is important. Dont go into the details of your design until you establish your pose, which many eager artists often do. Look at humans for how the body changes between standing and action poses. If you are going to do a standing pose, keep the shoulders pointed upward, arms flared out, legs spread slightly and feet pointed outward, NOT straight ahead. Action poses, use diagonals, imagine in your mind what the mechs body looks like halfway through the action movement it is making, so that you are capturing it at the point it is moving the fastest.

c_prc_sil_01.jpg

Personal advice

Stop thinking of the process in terms of drawing. Define the overall silhouette and refine henceforth by making shapes and forms. I find it useful to block in with a solid, dark paint. Think of it as sculpting or building some blocks in 2D space, where you add and remove faces, forms from your block over time to build a mech.

Core skills regardless of process include - values, form, perspective, proportions.

Anatomy is not so important, but to make a humanoid mech appealing you want to design it in such a way that it follows familiar landmarks of the human body.

Don't be afraid to look at lots of other people's designs and steal from them. Because this is what everyone else does.

Giant Robot proportions are designed with the prospect of making the robots look giant, as such, try to think of things less from a design standpoint and more from a perspective one.

Even when you're looking at your giant robot at eye level, it should give off a sense of enormity to it.

Things to remember:
Shins and feet are greatly exagerrated, because they're drawn as if from human perspective

The groin is very high up on the robot body, and the torso looks relatively small, as to mimic foreshortening.

The elbow joints will be parallel to the bottom of the ribs as opposed to just below them on a normal human, this helps to keep the armored look of your robot.

Lastly, Robots don't have substantial necks or neck muscles. So shorten that puppy up.

-anatomical studies/life drawing, to get a better idea of how the human form fits together, and what more interesting poses/motions look like. Your robots are probably going to be doing more things than just standing in 3/4s perspective looking tough (unless they're all Ex-S Gundams)

-perspective drawing. Unless viewed from extremely far away, a mech is going to be distorted heavily by perspective. Start with studies of buildings, then move on to large vehicles -- trains, garbage trucks, etc.

-build a lot of gunpla. Handling all those leg joints, hip rotators etc. will give you a better idea of where you can put armor plates & joints to allow for a full range of motion, how to abstract the human form into cylinders and hinges

-read and draw from a lot of non-/m/ material. Fashion, architecture, premodern art, etc. You can do what you want in art and life, but the broader your pool of references, the better.

I've never put any SERIOUS effort into learning to draw, because I've never considered my art worth showing off to people, and I'm one of those people who, if he doesn't get it the first time, will usually give up because he either gets it or he doesn't. Sometimes I wish I could draw, though, because I run mecha-related quests on anon-kun and I think a picture would be worth a thousand written words. When I try to do pictures it comes out laughably bad like pic related.

It was originally a placeholder until I could find a drawfag willing to do it better, but it was so adorably awful that the players elected to keep it just for shits and giggles.

>Kawamori's Zentradi designs
Err, what? The battle pod things are mechs. And no one would call the Zentradi themselves mecha, they're just big ass green men.
>>
>>13861629
3D is actually pretty easy when you get down to it; half the battle is stupid resource management shit (modeling efficiently and working the topology for readability/animation/etc.), the other half is all the dumb stuff you have to know to render. Modeling itself is almost a triviality.

I'd say to download Sculptris and have at it. It takes care of a lot of stuff for you so you can just get to sculpting. It's nothing you're going to use for production, but for getting acquainted with 3D space on your 2D screen, it's helpful. I've seen tons of people who can't even draw for shit pick up Sculptris and turn out something worthwhile they're very first time, and people who CAN draw turn out some amazing stuff.

Rather than blocks machines, I used to copy a bunch of stuff out of biology books, just bits and pieces of animals I liked, mostly sealife. And that's really not a bad place to start just drawing bits of stuff you like from books and stuff.

To be fair Sketchup is extremely simplistic and you would've probably had a better experience with Blender or something like Lightwave.

Here's something I made in Sketchup. I'm too lazy to really learn proper drawing principles so I just mess around in Sketchup all day because it's what I'm most accustomed to.

Thanks, this is actually the first I've ever gotten to a point of completion I was impressed enough with to render out and show off. I'm currently working on another design based off of a rough sketch unlike my other one here. Then there's all the projects I've started and shelved to work on later when I feel like it like an original donut steel gundam and a zudah.

>>13892628
Yeah, Sketch up basically the MS paint of 3d.

Yeah unfortunately bro there is no shortcut and the best way to do it is just to draw like a fuck ton of stuff all of the fucking time.

Good understanding of perspective is really critical to mecha design and making sure that it looks believable and makes sense. Just start drawing boxes on top of other boxes.

Here is a picture I drew! Drawing is fun!

>>13861718
Dear Canadian: I will treasure this.
>>
>>13897099
>"Git Gud," "Moar Loomis," "Draw what you see"
This is all valid advice.
You will remain shit unless you draw every day.
Loomis is a decent introduction to 3D thinking, and perspective on the human body. Drawing what you see is literally what artists do.
>>
>>13897485
I might add that many anons don't grasp after(Loomis) is how they should learn to work with/deviate from Loomis' teachings or risk becoming very stale and bland. Don't get me wrong, Loomis is a great tool to learn structure and perspective on the human form but everyone I know who stuck hardcore to Loomis cannot emulate 'the human feeling' in their drawings. I like /ic/ and all but sometime they're unbearable
>>
>>13897485
"Draw what you see" is a meaningless platitude. A much better thing to say is "draw according to perspective."
>>
I'm not ready to let this thread go yet.
>>
>>13897485
Loomis isn't really good advice, really.

It's pretty mediocre.

This thread is already full of advice. Pick up some books (/ic/'s sticky is good for this), a pencil, some paper, and get to practicing. That's about it. No fancy e-tools; they're not what you need and don't give you anything you couldn't have gotten physically; this refers mostly to skills development. Every skill (e.g. perspective/construction) is something you learn and apply to all mediums, where you do this is irrelevant. Digital "skills" are merely tricks specific only to the use of software and are not -fundamental- skills, which are principles that can be learned and applied anywhere.

You will become disappointed in your work. This is a common and periodic occurrence; getting hung up over it never fucking helps. Seriously. Just fucking practice some more.

You will have to do a fuckton of work to become better. This usually translates to years of practice for many. Save your old work; if nothing else you can gauge your skills development. Be critical of your own work; do not shy away from certain acts of practice and do not gloss over your flaws; this will not help you and if you do these things you fall into mindsets common to stagnating DA autists. Improve your areas of weakness

Original ideas will come with time. Expand your visual library by enjoying things. Whatever. Get to work you lazy fuck.

>>13901359
Loomis is touted because he attempts to make the concept of construction understandable and simple. That's it. There are other books on the subject; if you feel Loomis' work really doesn't cut it then suggest other books.

Doing the final lines for the first issue of my comic.
I've learned a lot about musculature and construction since I started this little exercise, and no longer feel the need to hide my drawing weaknesses as much, and am re-drawing several of my characters to keep up.

All this in mind, left or right?
