Neo-XCOM is gay. Pirate the original and get OpenXcom. The original devs are gone so you don't have to feel bad.

Neo-XCOM is a gamey as hell TBS with gimmicky rules that lead to lots of frustrating situations where you get fucked by arbitrary rules. X-com wasn't supposed to work as a big squad based TBS game, and because of that they had to put in a bunch of bullshit like 'pod triggers' and '2 actions per turn' because if players were able to order their soldiers in a way that made sense anybody with half a brain could easily get through 90% of the situations the game could throw at you. There's still management stuff there, but it's streamlined to the point where it's like an accessory attached to the squad-combat while on OG X-com management was the entire game. Even combat was all about planning, efficiency and logistics. Actions in the geoscape could lead to potentially thousands of loadouts and tech levels when entering incredibly varied combat situations and the player had to face what was opposing them with whatever they had and no situation was impossible or a sure thing usually.

In the new game all skilled players know that it's all about a couple of killer strategies in the geoscape that always work (satellite spam, etc) while combat is a matter of gaming the systems rather than actually assessing each situation and responding accordingly. Because of that stupid 'pod trigger' system and the free move it gives to the aliens combat is all about creeping forward slowly and setting up as small engagements as possible so that you keep your situation manageable.

The big problem here is that to avoid letting another four aliens get the drop on you you need to avoid moving, but movement and flanking is most of how the new combat works, so instead of trying to simulate an actual fight, "how do I kill these aliens with my soldiers", the game gets the player thinking "how do I manage this group of aliens without moving one tile too far and triggering more?"

I don't have XCOM2. The incredibly positive reception of the first one has me thinking that it'll just be more of the same. People liked it and even thought it made them hardcore. That's probably what bugs me most. When somebody misses an alien the size of a gorilla with a shotgun at point blank range and complains you always get at least one faggot replying "that's XCOM, baby." Why does that have to be XCOM? XCOM didn't used to mean getting raped by gimmicky dicerolls and elite supertroopers murdering everything with their superpowers.

Why can't my favourite things stay dead?

Well, change "Neo-XCOM" to read "XCOM2", change the "killer strategies" to "Blacksite/Facility rush" and add a few lines about how the devs forced players to throw risk-management out the window by placing a timer on most non-plot missions, forcing players to place their soldiers in disadvantageous positions to reach the objective point in time, often leading to squad wipes

I'm helping!

>Nickname isn't "Kill em all"

>>
>>13857049
That doesn't sound fun at all.
>>
>>13857068

The intent was to reduce the overwatch crawl/bounding overwatch tactic that EU players and Australians tended to rely on.
>>
>>13857078
I can understand that idea, but I think that they'd have to redesign the entire game from the bottom up for it to really work. From the sounds of it not being able to patiently hop from ideal position to ideal position taking one small group of enemies turns the game towards regular and brutal forward charges which can't really be helped that much with clever thinking.

But I haven't played it though, so I might be wrong. Did putting swords into the game make aggression more viable?
>>
>>13857129
Swords are trash.
>>
>>13857135
That seems like a shame, I'm really fond of the stun batons in the original game. The big risk/payoff for getting your soldiers to stun aliens makes the early game fun every time.
>>
>>13857129

Swords, even the plasma sword, aren't as good as a well-placed plasma shotgun blast to the face, unfortunately (nothing really is). They're just there so you can RULES OF NATURE.

What DID change the viability of aggression tactics is the fact that Rangers have a ton of abilities based around mobility and concealment (like one that lets you move after a kill) and so on, while Psi-Ops get the ability to give people a free move, and it's possible to just shower death from range with the support and demo classes. The sniper class can apply a ridiculous amount of debuffs or damage to whole groups of enemies with their handguns.

The sheer amount of weapons you can get that allow you to wipe an entire enemy group, even one that has a "miniboss" tier alien at its heart, in a single turn mean playing aggressively lategame is less of a problem than doing it early game.

2 has a potentially brutal early game and a very easy lategame.

The forces of the ADVENT coalition have at their disposal the "ADVENT Mec", a fully robotic heavy trooper with the ability to devastate vast areas with their micromissile attack or burn down dissidents with fire from their gauss cannon.

The "Andromedon" is a heretofore unknown ayylien species that goes into battle wearing a massive powered suit that also doubles as their life support system. They hurl acid and fire a heavy plasma rifle, and can unleash a devastating melee attack that actually misses most of the time so really don't worry about it.

The Sectopod - the machine used by the Ethereals to crush Earth's conventional armour - has been adopted by the ADVENT coalition. Capable of raising itself to a height of two stories, this fully robotic unit bears the massive laser cannon it used in the last war, as well as a new mag weapon.

What I'm saying is no

>2 has a potentially brutal early game and a very easy lategame.

That's every X-Com game, isn't it. You start with the aliens having an upper hand but then you research better weapons and armor and things become more managable.

It's the truth from the very first game - especially the very first game. Don't let nostalgiafags blind you, Enemy Unknown is actually really fucking easy once you know what you're doing, even on Superhuman. And that's before you start abusing glitches or psionics.
>>
>>13857288
Provided that you don't get hit with Cyberdisks the early game of UFO: Enemy Unknown is actually pretty easy. I've always found the later game harder since there's always so much more of everything to manage. Not so much the battlescape, more the geoscape, but then that can bleed into your battlescape by causing you to go into battles unprepared.
>>
>>13857313
Cyberdiscs won't appear earlygame except for terror missions, and by the time you have a first your people should have laser rifles. Concentrated fire will take a cyberdisc down.

Not disagreeing with you here, quite the opposite. Enemy Unknown's geoscape was trivial and as long as you didn't outright ignore terror sites (but moving to one and lifting off immediately was acceptable, if costly), the only way to lose was getting a base raid. Otherwise you simply couldn't lose the game - there was always enough small and medium sized UFOs flying around to shoot down with your avalanche missiles for points, to break even at the end of the month.
>>
>>13857334
Are you forgetting the council? It might be that OpenXcom made the diplomatic game harder but last time I played I was frantically swatting down alien bases and infiltration UFO's all the time in an effort to keep everything together.
>>
>>13857247
D'aww. If only it was possible to make her less chunky.

I do love the robo-twintails.
>>
>>13857371

With the SDK out, anything is possible (once people get past the nearly nonexistent documentation)
>>
>>13857344
Bases are no big deal. Each alien base generates only 5 points a day. That's the equivalent of shooting down a Large Scout per month. Many people actually keep an alien base around so its supply ships can be milked with land raids, especially if it's something easy like Floaters.

Infiltrations are RNG heavy in that if a battleship appears, you already lost a country. All you have to do is shoot down enough UFOs that appear before it, so many that the battleship's appearance is delayed enough for the mission to time out. But these UFOs tend to be once again various levels of Scouts - Interceptors can easily take down every UFO in the game that's not a battleship so I don't see a problem.

And if you lose a country, it hurts if it was a major sponsor but the game continues. It's not like the new XCOM where you lose the game if enough countries withdraw funding. All you lose is money.

Here's a big /m/ pool.
>a.pomf.cat/vnvqjo.bin

It contains (mostly MCs): (Great) Mazinger and Grendizer, Getter Robo, Tekkaman, Raideen, Combattler V, Ginguiser, Daitarn 3, Ideon, Baldios, Braiger, Dougram, Xabungle, Giant Gorg, VOTOMS TV and Mellowlink, Dragonar, GGG, and about 6-7 assholes each from MSG/Z/ZZ Gundam.

On the non-animated side of things, there's a few characters each from Star Trek, X-Files, Stargate, Farscape, Babylon 5, Blake's 7, and Captain Scarlet.

It's a little heavy on Rangers / Sharpshooters and light on PsiOps and maybe Grenadiers.
I'll be expanding it also, so if you have particular requests, put them here (along with a suitable class and personality type, and a nickname if applicable).

That guy is full of shit, the swords give you massive amounts of damage in the early game (8-10 compared to the 3 from your garbage assault rifles) and you now get less shots per mag so they have the potential to save your ass when you run out of ammo, plus the rangers can get an ability which makes it so they don't trigger overwatch/reaction fire which means if some assholes pin you down you can just banzai charge them

>E.X.O. Suit

I fucking love these things. I love the variety of armor types in this game. Rather than going "Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3".
>>
>>13858718
I've seen complaints on the appearance of the armor types in this game, and I don't see the problem. All of the weapons and armor look so cool.
>>
I enjoyed the game overall, but I kinda wish they did more with the stealth mechanic. Playing through some of base infiltrations, I got irritated when I saw the guards kept making beelines right for my guys even when stealthed, rather than following patrol patterns, so I'd be found out eventually no matter what. Judging from what people have told me, the point of concealment is to set up nice initial ambushes rather than stealthing your whole way through a stage, so I guess that makes sense. Even so, though, the battles end up feeling just like they did in the original XCOM rather than a guerilla struggle against all odds. I kind of wish there were stages where all the enemies were activated at once if you were discovered and made beelines for you immediately, but where the enemies patrolled predictably, so you'd have to spend some turns or use battle scanners to figure out where a patrol would pass by, then sneak in, hit the objective, and shoot your way out ASAP.

A couple of the base missions were like that for me, though. In the one where you have to rescue that Avatar prototype or whatever, the Sectopod spawned in the wrong place so my team could actually infiltrate the facility without being detected. The ground floor was full of enemies, so I sent my best Assault onto the unprotected roof, where she found a ladder leading to a room right next to the objective. I got my other guys into position, and when she picked up the package (setting all the guards off), my Heavy/Grenadier blew a hole in the wall right next to her, allowing her a quick escape. From what I heard that's really hard to do unless the enemies spawn in exactly the right places, so I wish there was more of it.
>>
>>13858744

Wait, people complained about the armor looks? They're straight up /m/ as fuck. Hell, the EXO Suit in particular looks taken outta Edge of Tomorrow.
>>
>>13858768

you forgot to mention that it comes back to life after killing it once
>>
>>13859066
It's actually a little worse than that. Once the pilot dies the mech suit starts moving on its own, and switches from ranged combat to melee attacks. It also leaves a trail of acid everywhere it steps in this form because the ayy's life-support fluids are caustic. Fortunately it loses all its armor and has a smaller life bar, so you don't have to shred it again.
>>
>>13858744

I dislike the WAR armour because the limb braces extend way too far from the actual armor

No, the powered armour comes back to life, the guy in the suit is dead as dicks

Soul Fire, Insanity, and Inspire is what I got thus far. It's been pretty useful. Also, Rangers are the fucking best.

Yeah, my ranger was the god damn hero of Earth. She had double-shot as her Colonel skill and a humungous critical rate along with an expanded clip on her shotgun, plus the best mobility enhancer PCS buff. Specialists are just fine, and do a lot of cool shit from their design perspective. The problem they run into though is that as you create them throughout the game, far too many of them start with really shitty stats. 1:8 or thereabouts is the ratio of Specs that will actually be good by endgame.

They have a guaranteed hit disabler nuke that does double damage to mecha and stuns/disorients even minibosses like Gatekeepers, guaranteed damage that does double damage to mecha and ignores armor, and can instantly remove mechanical units from play for several with a hack.

They're not as good as Psi-Ops, but they're incredibly good.

The one thing that kind of annoys me about a lot of timed missions is that for some of them, it counts as a fail if you evac, even if you accomplish the objective. Like, one time I was doing one of those "destroy relay" missions and managed to sneak past all the pods and blow away the relay. Now the pods were converging on my location, so I called in an evac and thought I'd get away scot free. But then it said I failed the mission, despite having destroyed the objective.
>>
>>13867996
Soloman said that it's designed that way so players won't abuse evac victories

Good, but poorly optimized and bug-ridden in some areas. It's worth a purchase, but I'd hold off until either a price drop, sale, or patch.
>>
>>13868282
Yeah, the bugs can get very annoying. Sometimes they're funny, like when a destroyed tree still showed up on the map and let both my guys and the enemies show up inside it, but others can be really annoying. During the last stage the lighting or something went completely crazy and the whole screen started flashing different colors. I had to reload a save to get it to work again, I'm just glad I don't have epilepsy or something, the way it was flashing would have given somebody a seizure.

you know what annoy the most? Viper.
yes, A. FUCKING. VIPER. you heard no wrong for that.
i'm fine with average Viper. but VIPER WITH BOOBS? FUCK. NO.
it's enough to deal with average AYYY all day long in EU & EW. but AYYY-tilian, WITH BOOBS in XCOM2? DOUBLE. FUCK. NO.

more like they're born as bitches with extraordinary bitchy bitch, in their every single cells & their souls.

either you hit or miss a shot on it, it hiss. AGAIN.
whenever it pull & bind you, it hiss. MORE.

IT'S. FUCKING. ANNOYING.

wish there's a mod where a MEC or equivalent unit could bitch slap, bitch fist, bitch rocket fist or whatever-awesome-kick-ass melee moves, right on those fucking biatch faces.

You apparently still get the strategic and tactical benefits of completing the mission, Bradford is just disappoint
>>
>>13867824

I do like that the game actually has handles for if you do something that you're not supposed to do.

For example if you give XCOM troopers (or ADVENT ones, for that matter) the Andromedon's "big punch" ability, instead of freezing up or using a placeholder anim like firing (which is what happens if you give a trooper who doesn't have a sword the Ranger's slash ability), they smack the targeted motherfucker in the face with the stock of their gun.

Of course the associated properties of the Andromedon big punch mean that the surrounding environment is also completely trashed, but changing the environment damage level of an attack is literally a matter of either adding or removing a line in the ini, and chaning the value associated with it. Ranger swords already do pretty massive environmental damage with their swords (not on the level of plasma, which means it takes a couple swings for them to accidentally a whole car) but still.

The game is so easily tweakable under the hood it's just amazing.

The continent bonus that adds a third slot only appears some of the time. There's a big pool of continent bonuses and it randomly selects one for each area at the start of the game. It's kind of unfortunate, since that's the only continent bonus that really changes the game.
>>
>>13874064

Breh the two Proving Grounds related ones can save you anywhere between two and three months of nonsense if you get them midgame
>>
>>13872932
With Enemy Within you'll want to jump on Meld whenever possible. MECs are phenomenal.

MECs keep the Aim stat of the soldier they were made from and get a feature based on that soldier's class. This means maxed-out Snipers make the best MECs. Get the piston punch, it comes with extra movement speed.

Gene mods are compatible with psionics, MECs are not. You will need a psionic character to finish the game, but unfortunately who's psionic is a diceroll that you can't find out the result of until you actually build the testing chamber.

Annette Durand is automatically psionic, so pump her up with every gene mod you've got. Shaojie Zhang is not guaranteed but has higher base Will than normal, meaning he's much more likely than most to also be psionic.

Get someone to Major and purchase Iron Will in the OTS as soon as possible. It bumps the Will gain soldiers get at each level from 2-6 to 4-12, meaning it won't do much good for your existing high-rank soldiers but it'll cause new rookies to become nearly invincible to a lot of the worse psionic attacks.
>>
>>13874088

>>
>>13874100
Don't worry about it too much. Weapon upgrades are nice, but you don't usually need three of them per soldier.
>>
>>13874088
If you have the DLC with Durand, you're also guaranteed to get three more psionics later on.
>>
>>13874107
that IF only you get the right combination for both soldiers ability & weapons, all the time.

& no one could resist superior repeater equipped on the extra third weapon slot, when all the combination was correct.

>>
>>13873906
That's what I used, but the explosion was never visible and regardless of what animation I gave it, it still took as long to go off as it does with normal Fuse. Except this time you don't see the soldier playing with purple magic.

So what you get is. Soldier points. Soldier gets back into position. 3 seconds of nothing. Fire spawns in. 2 more seconds. Suddenly the area takes damage from a gust of wind.
>>
>>13874067
Yeah, getting new exo suits instantly is damn handy.
>>
>>13874088
>maxed-out Snipers make the best MECs
Why would you waste a maxed out sniper on a MEC? Maxed out snipers are the deadliest thing in the game, given their two final abilities.
>>
>>13874088
A Heavy can be handy MEC'd thanks to Body Shield. If you stack defensive abilities on them, they can take five hits to kill even on Impossible.

For Psionics, it runs off the soldier's will when they're shoved in the box. You want to get the soldier up a few ranks with Iron Will unlocked, and shove your A-Team Supports and Assaults in first so that you can get someone useful out of it early with the bonus you get for finding a Psionic soldier when you don't have any yet.
Also also, save the soldiers you get from Progeny for last, they're guaranteed to be Psionic so they fuck with your chances to get someone useful those mind powers.

Except that's not the problem. The problem is that you've got no idea if a character is going to get a reaction shot or not. In new Xcom, it's spelled out that movement triggers reaction shots unless abilities say otherwise.

>You really just needed one spare magazine per person, if someone else ran out they could just grab a fresh rifle from a dead rookie
So you've got to backtrack and find the corpse of one of your dudes, maybe half way across the map, grab his ammo, and then run back. Sure, that's fun.

>Yea, but you could do the same to the Aays.
Vastly outweighed by the frustration of having to chase after plasma shots.

>Ufo: Aftermath
Good game. Solid difficulty, very atmospheric. A bit repetive gameplay but accetpably so.

Fun to break with ridiculous builds (twin machineguns or blademasters moving faster than the wind) but too buggy and repetetive. Cool ideas, bad execution.

Weird atmosphere and artstyle, but not in a bad way. Not really scary or creepy though. Fun gameplay, probably the best geoscape from all AfterX titles.

>UFO: Alien Invasion
Rather minimalistic but what you expect, it's a free thing and still in development. I didn't play it in years, should see what was changed since the last time I did...

>Xenonauts
Good and well polished game, but the tactical representation feels a bit too sterile and the game overall tries to be the original X-Com in the 70s rather than its own thing.

>Ufo: Extraterrestrials
Wow, what a load of crap. This is bad. It's like I'm playing a late 90s/early 00s shovelware.
Note, I played it unmodded. Supposedly with mods it becomes much better, but I've yet to try it.

>A bit repetive gameplay but accetpably so.

Wow, don't mind this sentence. I'm tired and my spelling is shit.
>>
>>13892852

>Ufo: Extraterrestrials

That game was the first thing I refunded when steam refund became available. What a load of shit.
>>
>>13892852
Extraterrestrials Gold is just Xenonauts if Xenonauts was made by Slavs.

It even has all the same design flaws, though it edges out Xenonauts slightly because of Xenonauts' soulless (as opposed to Extraterrestrials' downright terrible) art.

the only shits about T3 armor was 2 armor plates. it's too easily shredded into nothing.

i would tolerate for 3 to 5 armor plate. 2 armor plate just not enough.

> ranger 100% shot at flank high crit
> miss
> miss, again
> enemy near by ranger
> bladestorm activated
> miss
> miss, again

did anyone ever annoyed by ranger that missed golden opportunity all the time, where the level greatly surpass the "IT'S XCOM BABY!" level?

i seriously need some mod on 100% attack on blade, what's so hard to hit a target in melee range?
i would gladly accept grazed damage & so on, but fuck on me when the action was always "missed!".
>>
>>13894634
Well I mean isn't there a mod that does exactly that on the workshop? 100% sword accuracy?
>>
>>13891984
No, he's quite obviously being facetious in that last post. Learn to read sarcasm.
>>
>>13894634
Yeah, my ranger was constantly either missing blade attacks (especially bladestorm) or failing to finish targets off.

In the late game I realised that a point blank shotgun blast was more accurate (guaranteed hit instead of 70-80%ish and more powerful than the sword, and I'm beginning to think that blades are a trap. I'm certain reaper is, what a let down of a skill.
>>
>>13898215
The final tier of ranger skills also lets you fire two shotgun blasts back to back. Which will kill or servery injure pretty much anything.
>>
>>13898046
did that & the file is in hand, somehow it was confusing as file i use was not in steam.

>>13898221
that if point blank & 100% accuracy. still sometimes 100% accuracy have missed shot, for some unknown reason.

anyway did anyone ever experienced living enemy's grenade get fused by Psi soldier was able to "missed!" inside the blast radius, entirely? that was blasphemy.
ABSOLUTE BLASPHEMY!
>>
so why is XCOM 2 not being released on consoles?
>>
>>13898256
I think the game becomes harder to mod if you put it on consoles, so to make things easier for modder (a decision largely inspired by the success of the Long War addition) they decided to make it PC only.
>>
>>13898256
Considering all the people bitching about it not running or running like shit, you really think going to consoles would be a good idea?
>>
>>13898264
kinda screws over people with crappy computers though
>>
>>13898256

Because XCOM EU/W sold like seven copies on console

Total
>>
>>13898298
Shame they didn't take the hint, and gear the sequels more to computers, with more troops and get rid of the pods.
>>
>>13898457

The limited squad size and pod mechanic have nothing to do with platform choice and are a conscious decision by Jake.

I can't remember why he did it though

>>
>>13898505
Not sure about pods, but the limited squad size is there because - contrary to what you may remember, the old X-Com games are really damn easy when you outnumber the enemy. At least without cheap fake difficulty tricks of the kind TftD liked to pull off.

Aftermath series had your squad limited to 6-7 people too and I think that's the perfect size. 4 is too few - if you lose one soldier and another panics as a result, suddenly that's half your manforce down, and in a time critical game. That's too punishing. But more than 8 would just be busywork.

Yeah. Unfortunately anytime they perform a normal soldier action (like shooting) they drop to the floor, clip halfway into the ground, do their business, then go back to the air

i have daggerfall installed too, i keep dying in the beggining dungeon why are older rpg's so fucking good?
>>
>>13901680
could you replace the animation specifically for gremlins? or do all the soldiers share the same animations for that kind of stuff?
>>
>>13901843
The animations (for firing) are tied to the weapon models. I don't currently have the tools or the knowledge to deal with that at the moment.

YOU SAY THAT

So I can get it to show up in your barracks as a specific class. It still has wonky shooting animations but whatever.

Ideas for abilities go. Keep in mind that I am an idiot.
>>
I feel like an idiot for not know that PSI unit can learn both side of their skill hence spending months not training him
And Salvo is a fun skill
>>
>>13906147
Salvo + bigger boom + explosion radius up = NUKE EVERYTHING
>>
>>13906190
I love spamming explosion when I see armour unit or Chryssalid

but best thing is to hack units and let is rampage on the enemy side

But there was a a lack of interesting story based mission in XCOM2

I still think that modding the original XCOM is more fun than the new ones. New ones look nice but I think that the focus on pitched firefights combined with the pod system kills the fun.

The original game's Search & Destroy approach to combat is much more fun.
>>
>>13907339

The first reboot game has an emphasis on pitched firefights.

The second reboot game has the same search and destroy ethos. It places heavy emphasis on destroying revealed pods as soon as you encounter them because getting into a firefight in 2 is a death sentence.

bump for possible creative mods.

talking about mods, did anyone try to add reload function for implacable skill for ranger?

shits sucks when you're out of ammo & need to wait for the next turn to reload.
