If nothing else, I'm glad Nagano still remembers how to draw and is actively doing it, even if I'm not a big fan of the subject matter he's been drawing recently.

I like the newer designs as their own thing, but my question would have to be WHY Nagano decided to go through and basically just rewrite his entire life's work. Hell, even the Rebuilds exist in their own continuity for Anno to shit all over as he pleases since they don't touch the original series, sequelfags be damned.

We've had this discussion many times.

Basically, Nagano was bored of drawing the same designs for over 30 years, even longer if you count L-Gaim. He also felt caged by the fact that he was still writing FSS, which has a very distinct and established style within its own setting. So he felt that the only way he could regain his motivation to keep writing it was to change everything and "start fresh", even though he couldn't go all the way and start anew with a new franchise because he had a commitment to fulfill with FSS and its unfinished story. It's the exact same reason why Anno made 3.0, hell if you actually look at many other creators around their age (around the mid to late 50's), you'll see they all follow this pattern of rebooting themselves. Like how Miyazaki decided to remake Nausicaa into Princess Mononoke. Or how Tomino decided to make Turn A.

Personally, I think Nagano should just end FSS and start fresh. Same with Anno and the Rebuilds, though at least Anno is making money with them for god knows what. Maybe some day they'll collaborate. These two are the primary disciples of Miyazaki and Tomino, and it would be an absolute embarrassment if this singular franchise-hugging is how they end their legacy.
