I have yet to find out a legitimate reason why. Hell, I still struggle to distinguish between the manga and OVAs apart from some minor differences in plot and character. Characters being combined and given new personalities and plots that directly takes from other ishikawa manga without context are far from being minor differences. The ovas are Ken Ishikawa fanservice, they're not pure Getter Robo with the exception of Shin vs Neo.

Doesn't result in much being different. I haven't even read any of Ishikawa's other stuff, but it didn't matter because everything in the OVAs fit the tone of the manga, and occasionally the plot and art style matched up as well.

Go Ichimonji also has nothing to do with the Go in Armageddon.

No matter how much you like or dislike the shows I don't think it's possible to "perfect" a medium or genre. There's only good stuff and bad stuff, genres themselves are just groups of media that fall under certain descriptors.
