All this show arouses in me is a vague sense of dread. It has Shirow doing concepts, it has robot girls, it has dolljoints, it even has a girl called Nene, it's light-hearted, it's not pretentious, but it's all been neutered and twisted into an intensely bland moeblob formula where I can no longer recognize anything that appeals to me. If I didn't know Shirow was in on this I wouldn't be able to guess it.

I'd like to say that all it's lacking is an 80s artstyle and just be done with it, but I can't shake off the feeling that there's something else that's lacking; that in spite of how silly and fun it's meant to be, there just isn't a soul there and that it was entirely made by an automated program to appeal to my demographic. You know like in that Mitchell and Webb sketch where post-apocalyptic soldiers are watching a show about the British lifestyle filmed and broadcasted by robots.

Less dramatically, I'd say it's like meeting an old friend after 5 years of separation, but not being able to recognize him or care about anything he's done with his life. Not that I feel old, it's just that I'm in front of an object that is in fact deeply alien to me, when it should be the exact opposite. Sends actual chills down my fucking spine. I'm getting more creeped out by these two girls than by the M-66 herself.

I'm not laughing at the jokes, I'm not fapping to the dolljoints or USB ports, I'm not cheering for the cute girls, I'm not marveling at the pretty colors, I'm just afraid.

And all I can still hope for is that someone here can relate.

I just happened to rewatch GitS: Arise 3 today and I can see where the character designs got recycled. The auburn-haired woman with the cleavage-baring shirt became Pandora's Colonel Kurtz, but her design was used for Motoko's army CO, and the woman with short white hair and glasses was intended to be Uzal but became Dr. al-Said, the manager of the dam that got blown up in Arise 3.

I think the problem people have with Pandora boils down to taking it as Ghost in the Shell instead of Excel Saga.

The manga prods at transhumanism and cyborgs at times and has very little in common with its anime.

Korobase apparently's in charge of that, the doctor's visits are mainly developement psychological, from what we have seen. They apparently check her up and readjust her out- and inputs to the age median plus or minus whatever's suggested by whatever data they get from Korobase or whatever data's being stored by the body's own processors.
I mean, she casually remarked that she doesn't actually tire from physical activities, so they probably normalize her sleep/wake-cycles and other bodily feedback mechanisms required for brain developement artificially.

I think they both are custom made with the highest grade tech that 2 super geniuses could come up with. Clarion is more combat oriented so she has a heavier frame. However both of them are limited because of their size, there is just less room to put stuff.

Is Clarion even really human? They've said a few times that she's a full-body cyborg like Nene, but her behavior and speech are what you'd expect of an android who operates based exclusively on directives and logic, while Nene acts like a normal girl. Clarion also has no need for sleep even though Nene does, and her character arc seems to be learning about feelings and stuff, this was very evident in this latest episode.
I guess there's some twist coming up regarding this? I don't know anything about the source material.

In previous threads, we were calling Takumi "lesbian loli Tony Stark", but now that I think about it, a better comparison would be lesbian loli Howard Hughes (whom Tony Stark was based on, but who had a reputation for being a recluse with OCD later in life.)

The anime's website says she's an android. There is a certain dark appeal in the idea of Clarion being a human cyborg who was thoroughly dehumanized by being made into Uzal's "pet", but I think it's more likely that she's an advanced illegal AI and Uzal was just bending the truth to make Nene get all friendly with Clarin. Nene telling everyone they're both humans might also help Clarion blend in.

I think Clarion and BUER are both A.I.'s but it may never really come up in the show. Or they might be edited copies of human minds running on all hardware. The only hint I have seen against that is that Clarion was using some of their limited air supply instead of saving it all for Nene. Which implies she has some kind of organic parts.

Takumi's been trying to get to Uzal's data all the time. She seems to have way more dataforce at her disposal than Kurtz's crew or the BUER CNU, her robots are still inside the facility and now Clarion and Nene are distracting the bad guys.

Maybe she's planning to get in first once BUER cracks and lock others out, or at least grab some of Uzal's precious research data in the process.

Nene really is an alternate version of the Major. She is obsessed with trying to reenact the hatch opening scene. I thought there for a second that we might get to see Nene get angry for real but it was just a tease.
