E7's movie takes place in an AU where the main villains are the counterparts of the main heroes of the original show. Thanks to a crazy science experiment they inadvertently caught a glimpse of the main E7 verse, and now they want to go there out of a desperate hope it will save their lives. Eureka 7 was the lovechild of mecha fanboys, the ending was going to be dark but they made it happy and kinda an unrealistic end to the situation because they couldn't help themselves, I remember some guy on /m/ showing me behind the scenes stuff, there was a lot of passion that went into making it and you can really feel it if you've seen a lot of older mecha shows.

I don't know anything about ao but I assume the core people behind the show bailed, since I was told they only had a hand in the games and movie. (which as said above the movie was some bitter pretentious nonsense because the creators of the show were salty they had a cult following that wanted a sequel to the show "oh no people like us and want more better be a huge hipster asshole about it")

The final episode was just kind of lame. Renton becomes a man and saves the day, basically. Pales in comparison to the previous few episodes where everyone was being pushed to their breaking points.
