Definitely, especially the first two seasons. Season three is kind of middling because it's so rushed, but there are still good episodes.

There are a few parts where it seems obvious that there was a lot of meddling behind the scenes; sometimes plotlines just get dropped. What happened to Smokescreen is a damn shame.

IDW Star Saber is a religious zealot that kills people on the reg. He's kind of a paladin. I think he's dead now too.

Its based on old Fanfics from before the series was subbed, and it might have been what people thought he actually acted like in the series in the BBS days. Back in the days before subs were common there was a telephone game going on about what actually happened in those mythical Japan only shows.

If anybody has any experience with BBS Transformers communities I'd love to hear about it.

This, and to be fair, it's a recontexualization of Star Saber's whole honorable swordsman motif from Eastern to Western, samurai to knight, and in the process, religious crusader. It makes sense for a western cultural context series. And it's not like IDW doesn't do wildly different takes on characters on the reg. Classic Prowl wasn't a Machiavellian manipulative spymaster, Arcee wasn't a cold-blooded assassin, Springer didn't have a massive guilt complex, Optimus did in the Marvel comics but didn't in the cartoon, Megatron's whole backstory in IDW and therefore, the reasons behind the war are very different from what G1 did... and that's just for starters. You kinda have to accept that IDW does things differently, generally tending toward moral ambiguity.

And honestly, I think adding moral ambiguity to Star Saber actually makes him more interesting. IDW Star Saber still sees himself as a Warrior of Justice, he just has an unpopular definition of that compared to the other, more modern Autobots. I also think that manga Deathsaurus is more interesting than anime Deathsaurus.

By the time Dark Cybertron happened, the book was more about weird, Dr. Who-esque space adventures with a side order of copious flashbacks to how awful Cybertron was before the war. Roberts has a glut of characters he could easily focus an issue on (all five Protectobots are now on the ship, as are longtime rival catbots Ravage and Steeljaw), but he instead chooses to focus on the core cast. It's something the series has needed for a long time, and it ties back to the '86 Movie. Transformers aren't just toys; they're characters. Very rarely are they treated as such.

Overlord's rampage and Rewind's death was a genuinely poignant event in the comic at the time though, and it had some pretty serious far-reaching ramifications. I was genuinely enthused to see how Chromedome would deal with it, but all that was just thrown away. If Roberts did originally plan that to happen, it's just more evidence that he's really all flash and no substance.

If I may completely nerd out on the level of a 14 year old girl writing fanfics about anime characters having gay relationships (I am neither irl).

If I was to write an adult tranformers there would be female transformers and the ability to reproduce sexually.

It makes sense that a space exploring race would be able to reproduce sexually. It makes no sense to have the transformers traveling across space, either to explore or to conquer and have to travel all the way back to cybertron to make new solders, scientists, builders, etc.

Why would they ever get off the planet if the further they got away, the more they encourage their own extinction?

No, there would be fembots, and the potential for sex and babies. If only to repopulate ships, bases, etc, far from home.

Every combiner team would have at least one female, maybe two, to replace limbs lost in combat.

Also, they would appear slim or otherwise female in appearance so their bodies can put more of their energon into making a new spark and not waste it moving around. When not pregnant, they can use this energy for speed or weaponry. That is why they would be motorcycles, cars and the rare tank.

This would also make for some interesting story telling. You could have one leader of the decepticons being a religious fanatic that thinks only true cybertronians are born via their God, vector sigma / the matrix / Primus, etc. That would explain why there aren't any female decepticons in the early shows. They killed them all or expelled them.

I'd also fix some other problems in the TF universe, like not everyone would turn into humanoid robots. Some would turn into other laien things. It would all really depend on the places they've gone to and their own preferences. That would explain why Trypticon only turns into a dino or Zilla. He was on a planet with that type of being, and he liked them.
