Is Macross Frontier the comfiest mecha show in the last 10 years?

Darn.

High School Queen is where some mixed feeling settle in, but the first seven or so episodes are all solid 10/10 exhilarating. The middle of the series just drags a bit too much with trying to force Ranka into a triangle where she doesn't fit, but Frontier remains one of the best and most optimistic space anime I've seen in a long time. The design and music just nail the perfect feeling of tone and setting.

And it doesn't end with the annoying bitersweet ending that mecha anime have been pulling for awhile now. As for High school queen, it's one of those mediocre episodes that I love, because I can sit back, crack open a beer and enjoy the laughs. But yea, that first half of Frontier is just so fucking great. Wish there would have been more episodes like that.

Am I the only one who couldn't really get into Frontier because I didn't really like the main trio? Alto was boring and kind of a dick sometimes, Sheryl always seemed full of herself, and Ranka was sweet but otherwise not particularly interesting. I don't remember having any issues with the side characters, but truth be told I don't really remember them much at all.

I haven't seen the movies yet, maybe I'd like those better.

I just finished watching the movies, and I liked them much more than the TV series, which I thought was forgettable. But fuck Alto disappearing at the end. I know that there were strong implications that he would eventually return, but if you're going to imply anything at all then you might as well just SHOW it. The love triangle was forced because it was lop-sided. You had two people at the cusp of starting a serious relationship and one little girl who provides conflict to that, but isn't serious end game. It's actually a type of love triangle and one that isn't used often, because being that third party takes a certain level of delusion, which just makes them way too pitiful, if not annoying and hateful.

Ranka's sole position in Alto's story is as a means for him to run away from his problems. She's used as placeholder for things that he actively gives a shit about, which is why after he gets his shit together and she threatens the things he cares about he decides to kill her.

And that was Alto being manipulated by Leon. There's no way Ranka would have willingly destroyed Frontier. By the end of the series he's blinded by Leon's hate doctrine and Sheryl had to shake that idea off him in ep 24.

It's actually the pretty standard triangle of choosing a mature love (Sheryl) versus a juvenile one (Ranka). Choosing the first means growing up for Alto, and the same goes for Ranka when she lets go of him in ep 21 (at least until ep 25 fucks things around reviving the triangle), when she sticks to a decision he very much disapproves of when previously she had relied on him for everything. The love triangle in SDFM was like this, too.

In the movies, though, the triangle is different. Because now Alto and Ranka are best friends so him joining SMS in part in order to protect her feels more genuine, and Ranka is more mature and confident, doesn't rely on him as much or feel as insecure around Sheryl as in the tv series. So I feel like the contrast between a mature love vs. a juvenile one isn't as strong, but it's still there since despite knowing Ranka for longer he connects with Sheryl on a deeper level that he ever did with Ranka. For example, compare the last part of his beach date with Ranka and how he laughs at Ranka feeling at home with the Vajra or how, although he seems touched when she talks about every small living thing having a heart, Alto doesn't feel the same connection he does at Sheryl's later monologue about how the stage is her life.

No other anon is right, Ranka was never pressured into making any decision. If anything the people around her urged her to think hard about what SHE wanted to do. However, as far as she was concerned if she fought the vajra then Alto would like her more, but Alto never once even hinted that either. He like everyone else told Ranka to do what she thought was best. Alto was also the only person that Ranka listened to on the subject.

Ranka didn't start thinking that the Vajra weren't that bad until AFTER she saw Ai-kun change. And yes, Ranka was partially motivated by her own selfishness. She was only manipulated once and that was in episode 24, and even that only happened because of her own poor decision making. Ranka caused Ranka's problems, there's no else to blame for it but her.

I called it peer pressure, but maybe there's a better word from it. Anyways, what I meant is that it completely seemed like the best option to take at that point although as soon as Ranka sang in ep 16 she started to feel like it wasn't right.

Feels like Macross is the only franchise left that can have marketable idols in it and can have them sing about actual love or at least lewd/sexy/actual romance stuff. On top of that she was also questioned by Breda on why she was doing what she was doing, and her answer was because she wanted Alto to love her. In episode 16 Ranka was really just upset about her mother's lullaby being remixed by Grace but again when asked by Grace if she should just trash it since it was important to her, again Ranka said nothing.

It was Ranka who made the decision to be Frontier's "songstress of hope" without any pressure from anyone around her. The only one to blame for Ranka's mistakes is Ranka and no one else.

That's not to say you're wrong because your not, however Kawamori fully intended for Alto and Sheryl to end up together from the very start, this means that all their interactions have this end goal in mind, and that Ranka from a story telling standpoint is the third wheel. Alto's relationship with Ranka is one filled with misdirection, lies, and fake personas. Alto isn't in the least bit interested in starting a relationship with Ranka, he only sees her as a placebo for his desire to protect Frontier. Ranka in turn views Alto as her "prince on a white horse" protecting her from all that threatens her and always being there for her. However this is a lie, because though Alto chose Ranka to be a placebo, thing is he's never actually saved Ranka, so the entire basis of their relationship that is Alto being Ranka's protector is a lie. When you add in Alto's habit of keeping Ranka at arm's length, and clearly avoiding the mere thought about being in a relationship with her, you have a love triangle where the third party has a one-sided attraction, since the object of affection has no romantic interest in them and never seriously considered them. This means that the third party never had a chance to begin with, and their belief that they stood a chance was ultimately just their own delusion. We see this with Ranka taking things like a scripted kiss, and stage show as signs of affection from Alto, but at the same time not knowing when his birthday is or that he's a famous Kabuki actor, or realizing that he never actually talks about himself with her.

For the record the love triangle in Macross was also about Hikaru moving on from an unrequited love, hence the song Runner, where the singer vows to stop chasing after the girl in the photos(Minmei).

The love triangle in the movie wasn't a choice between childhood and adulthood, because unlike the TV series Ranka, movie Ranka was mentally Alto's peer. In this case ire it wasn't a choice between fake and real, because Alto's relationship with both girls was real, both girls also demanded Alto to be an adult in order for him to be in a relationship with either of them.

So what was the choice in the movies then? It was a choice between someone who was essentially his soul mate yet unknown and possibly treacherous versus someone he was familiar and comfortable with but who was just too different from him and he just couldn't understand no matter how he tried. In order for Alto's relationship with Sheryl to progress he needed to place his faith in her no matter how much the situation made it look like he shouldn't.

Alto at the end chose to place his faith in Sheryl with she didn't betray, she showed him that he placed his faith in the right girl. Which was why Alto was so hurt when he thought that she was dead, he fell for her, and placed his faith in her even when everyone said he shouldn't she doesn't betray his trust but then dies, seemingly ending their relationship prematurely.

FYI that distance existed in the TV series as well. Alto in the TV series just couldn't understand tv Ranka on a fundamental level, which was a part of why he couldn't be her protector because he needed the help of others just to understand her, they were just too different. Sheryl however was his kindred spirit. This is what "Ao no Ether" was about her realizing that Alto and her were just too different. But then he saves her life and Ranka again not knowing that this was solely because of Sheryl mistakenly gets the impression that she still had a chance. She never really grew up in that regard.

I unironically compare Macross Frontier to a hundred million dollar hollywood action adventure summer blockbuster.(and not in a negative way)
Call Kanno a hack, a copycat, a fraud, but her John Williams imitation worked wonders for F, in the same way Williams elevated the likes of Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Jurassic Park to near legendary adventure status.

I will admit the second half(or specifically when Brera shows up) tapers off rather quickly, but still holds that magical feeling, if only a bit loose

Uh no, Alto wanted to kill Ranka because she was an enemy of his home, it was Sheryl's plea for him not to do so, that made him decide against it. Alto was always using Ranka as an placeholder for Frontier, until the final episodes where finally admitted that it was really Frontier that he wanted to protect the whole time, not Ranka. So there isn't anything that contradicts Kawamori's words, if anything all his words do is point out the obvious for any delusional Rankashippers.

How it is displayed through out in the show is that Alto has no romantic feelings for Ranka at all, and really does nothing to egg her on. In fact, all their friends stop trying to push them together when they realize that he's not interested in her. And one point in time Mikhail practically yells at him that Ranka loves him and Alto doesn't give a shit. On top of that you also have the story giving out parallels to Alto and Ranka's brothers/protectors, because that's the "role" he took up, it's only Ranka who doesn't see it that way.

There is a difference between being important to someone, and being in love with them. There is such a thing as platonic feelings, which means feelings that aren't romantic in nature, that is the nature of Alto's feelings for Ranka. Sheryl's, Brera's, and Ozma feelings towards Ranka are paralleled in the same manner.

Bottom line is Ranka lost in the tv series, and you shouldn't even need Kawamori (or the rest of the staff) pointing it out to realize that.

FYI, it wasn't just Kawamori who pointed out that the line wasn't romantic in nature, it was the whole staff as well as the Nips. In fact they had a big laugh about it.

Sometimes there is a right and wrong way to interpret things. And in this case you interpreted it incorrectly. The last episode didn't reset anything. In fact there is no dialogue there that even suggests that, besides the delusions of Rankafags and haremfags.

Alto himself has never shown any interest in being in a relationship with Ranka, at all. Also doesn't really understand Ranka at the end of the tv series either, and if anything that ending was against the idea of the the three of them could ever be in a threesome, since neither Sheryl nor Alto have any interest in being in a relationship with Ranka, Ranka wants to have Alto exclusively, and Sheryl still needs to play a mediator in order for Alto to be able to understand Ranka, because without Sheryl's interference Alto would have killed Ranka, and Alto and Sheryl are in a relationship which Ranka doesn't know about.

As I said before someone can be important to you, without you wanting to fuck. That is essentially Sheryl and Alto's feelings towards Ranka. Alto's words are literally the equivalent of, "if not for the two of you I wouldn't be where I am today" which is just an accumulation of his character development not romantic development.

Just so you know Kawamori products don't have harem endings, and Macross is not a harem series, if you want an harem end you're in the wrong place. On top of that further destroy any other points, the tv series was originally going to have a scene where Alto rejected Ranka, the reason it doesn't was because they couldn't find a place to fit it in and in the original place that was going to be included seemed too awkward. Alto's feelings for Sheryl are genuiene and they both know it the reason why, Sheryl said "let's stop pretending to be lovers" despite knowing that neither of them are pretending was because she knew she was dying and she didn't want him to tie himself down to her. Also nice job ignoring the fact that Alto said that she was wrong immediately afterwards.

Sometimes there is a right and wrong way to interpret something, such is the case right now. I'm not stating an opinion, I'm stating a fact. The creator isn't stating an opinion he was stating a fact.
