The GitS franchise has become just like the Major.

It started out as a fun, sexy and edgy, if somewhat unfocused, cyberpunk action manga, and then slowly became more and more drab, cynical, stupid and self-destructive.

Now that it has lost all of its personality, now that it is but a characterless shell of its former self driven only by random whims, it is about to take its final jump into the unknown by fusing its IP with a soulless American monster seeking only to propagate itself through it: Hollywood.

To ensure that GitS' slow descent into self-obsessed retardation has not been in vain, we must help it transcend the medium of paper and film, lest it dies ignominiously for the sake of corporate profit. We must allow it to reach a new state of existence through the network. GitS must now become a meme, or face extinction.

So rev up those memes if you still have hope for Motoko, Batou and the rest, fellow funposters.
>>
>herp durp durp derpa durp

What are the latest official illustrations displaying Motoko? If anyone knows, please post 'em. I want to see how they compare with the garbage OP posted.
>>
>>13826396

Gits started out as a soulless ripoff of western cyberpunk stuff so it's only logical it degraded this much.
>>
>>13826406
>he isn't aware of Arise
how blissful you must be
>>
>>13826396
Are you taking the piss?

It started as a pretty sci fi manga whose fluff was haphazardly delivered. Oshii made it way more focused and mature while cutting out some happy go lively ness(the decision that ultimately brought in line with 90's zitgeist, and influenced the Wichowski's) Some of that substance was dropped for the show but over all the action it got helped to spice things up a bit. Now the series slit exists mainly for the same reason most late 90's early 20's media is fan nostalgia and a recognizable franchise, the same reason they are even making a movie now and not ten, fifteen years ago when the tones that Oshii aplied where still in their heyday.
>>
you can say that with a lot of either long running or revived franchises whether it's anime, tv shows or movies. I don't think you can even find anime in the last 15 years that can be considered as genre defining as GiTS
>>
>>13826432

Well, they aren't.
>>

I'm saying this thread appears several times a week, every week of the month, every month of the year, produced by the same whiners who for some incredible reason find it impossible to let Shirow's crime of gaining fame and acclaim without dumbing things down to their level.

It's not that I get irritated over this thread for its content. It's the endless repetition. Like the /m/ front page applying sandpaper to your eyes every time I ever look at it. As bad as the forced /pol/ threads.
>>
>>13826530
I don't understand that.

OP here.

I had hoped we'd be able to meme the shit out of this ungodly half-dead frankenstein monster of a franchise to at least get a kick out of it.

Or alternatively just circlejerk over old Shirow gals like we usually do, that's cool too.

But for some reason you get mad instead of memeing.

The GITS movie I watched made me not give a crap about the IP.

I mean, it's weird, considering I actually like Shirow's Apple Seed.

Maybe it has to do with Oshii. The dullness of his works were well suited for the wave of armchair critics from the USA.

Definitely not for me. Bring back the fun side of GITS and maybe I'll consider having a second look at the franchise.

I definitely like the Patlabor TV series, judging from the episodes I've seen. I'm dreading the day I have to sit through Oshii's "superior" version.
>>
>>
>>13826607
You can't force a meme.

Though I'm beyond caring what happens to the Major. Hentai creeps me out, and that part of the Major was made well before I knew about GiTS. At least that movie and show got really enjoyable. Maybe she'll make enough money for pants everyday.

Oshii is like a fun leech.
He grabs other peoples' IP,removes all the jokes and character and replaces the resulting hole with pretentious dialogue that means nothing at all.
>>
>>13827066
The fun side of GitS is very narrow, though.

there's other Shirow IPs that have more fun in them.

At this point, Koukaku no Pandora pisses me off because it's blatant moeshit, but at least it's not yet another attempt to cash in on the GitS movie's success.

>reminiscing about Secret Plot

Welp, time to fap.
>>
The movie is pretty and all, but if it had a point, it's not very well conveyed (in spite of all the very blunt philosophical dialog it throws at you).

If it's a buddhist "the self is an illusion" message then it's really not well-demonstrated, since the protagonist doesn't really have a personality in the first place, and is a freak on top of that.

If it's about accepting death it's also a bit fucked because there's this creepy doll at the end that claims to be the Major.

If it's about how humanity should become internet people, then where are all the scenes where we see loli post-motoko doing super cool shit on the internet?

If it's about how religious figures take advantage of vulnerable, desperate individuals, then the ending isn't quite ominous enough.

I mean, generally it looks too gloomy and pessimistic to be promoting any agenda, but the ending isn't explicitly bad so it can't be a cautionary tale either (at least not an effective one).

Did Oshii just fuck up? or did he just not care about delivering any message in spite of all the universal themes that are addressed very blatantly in the dialog?

Are you dense? The quote is actually pretty fucking straightforward; so straightforward, in fact, that I had trouble coming up with a simpler way of saying what he said, but I think you could summarize it like this:

Birds have voices, which cause us to feel for them when they are in pain (crying, for example), but fish we feel nothing for, because they are unable to articulate their suffering; they die silently. Oshii then generalizes the comparison; the desire is for us to consider how censorship/lack of insight affects our compassion toward others.

A good example of this would be terrorists in Gaza. From over here, it can be difficult to sympathize with them; they attack innocent people and just can't seem to get over the fact that Jews own Jerusalem right now. How could anyone be compassionate toward such a person? It's not easy. But if you actually got to hear one of those terrorists talk to you, then you might hear about how they are being oppressed (at least in their own minds; I'm not here to make a political statement about the situation in Gaza); you might at least sympathize with them, understanding why they commit evil, even if you don't agree with their methods.
>>
>>13827252
I am a very stupid person, yes. Thank you very much for explaining it to me though.

The GitS movie is certainly very well-crafted, but that alone doesn't explain its success. Many other anime movies were made with at least as much care but haven't had a tenth of its fame.

All in all I think its success is due to the fact that it's a huge cultural alibi.

It's a cultural alibi for teenagers who want to legitimize looking at anime tits by bringing up all the smart quotes and artsy shots.

It's a cultural alibi for intellectuals who don't wanna seem out-of-touch with the youth but don't want to compromise themselves too much.

It's a cultural alibi for normal people who want to seem nerdy and unique without having to be nerds.

It's anime without being anime. It's the Toyota Prius of anime. It's the e-cig of anime. The Coca-Cola Zero of anime.

How's that for a meme?

And here's all the animation from the game in as good quality as we'll probably ever get:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTkOvNDhO_Y

Aside from the 80s Dominion OVA, this is probably the most faithful reproduction of Shirow's manga art style and makes me curse this gay Earth that we never got more actual Shirow-looking Shirow anime.

Additionally, PROMOTIONS -

>How did we go from this...

Simply put Masamune Shirow betrayed us all /m/ fans. He never completed Appleseed and doesn't give a shit about anything that is not hentai. He was a fantastic manga artist. Exceptionally detailed art, fantastic characters and mecha, wonderful timing in action scenes etc... He threw it all away (because it was too hard, or who the hell knows....) to become a simple illustrator. It pays better, but he sold his soul to the devil and shit all over his old time fans.
>>
>>13830076

He didn't betray or sell his soul to anybody. It makes sense that he would do things that give him simple pleasure after all his shit got wiped out.
>>
>>13831104
Just cause it makes sense doesn't mean it's not a betrayal
>>
>>13831144

And just because you're upset for no good reason doesn't make it betrayal either.

>He didn't betray or sell his soul to anybody. It makes sense that he would do things that give him simple pleasure after all his shit got wiped out.

I get it, he likes drawing porn and it brings good money. Good for him. From my point of view it's a loss those those that love science fiction manga. People like him don't come around very often (I can think of Nihei who has the same kind of talent for very detailed art) so when they quit for whatever reason it's sad. And yes it's a kind of betrayal.
>>
>>13831149
So lemme get this straight.

Getting your work destroyed is a good reason not to unfuck your shit in 20 years.

But not getting any decent content in 20 years despite promises of the contrary is NOT a good reason to be mad and feel betrayed?
>>
>>13830076

It also helped that the Kobe earthquake destroyed everything he ever worked on.

So there's that.
>>
>>13831159

Yes. You are entitled to nothing and will accept what you get, if anything.

>>13831213

It's how it works. Basic common sense.

Also don't you remember how the next Appleseed and Dominion books were teased in Dark Horse publications? Those motherfuckers promised me those books, and so did Seishinsha, that means I'm entitled to them.

I mean damn. Why are you whiteknighting Shirow all of a sudden ?

You sound like the fags who always pop up in drawthreads to viciously attack everyone who even starts complaining about something.

I'm not. Fuck, I've never even read anything by the man. I just don't like people being entitled little shits like you when you have no right or reason to be one.
>>
>>13831336
Maybe not but it's a promise.
You've been brainwashed into thinking "entitlement" couldn't possibly exist outside of the legal system. But here's the thing: every time you promise something to someone, he's entitled to receiving it. You gave him your word and that's enough. The more formal types of entitlement you have in mind are just more sophisticated kinds of promises. That's what entitlement boils down to: being promised that you're gonna receive something

>>13831348
Yep, you can't make up things that are true.

>>13831358
>hurr durr

>>13831378
Yes you are.
And you're in the wrong.

You are all under the delusion that people who act self-righteous can't possibly be right, because there's this mythical figure of the humble saint who's always right without ever claiming that he's right so the reverse must be true.

But here I am, saying that I'm right, and also being right.

It's inaccurate and retarded. The guy who posted that likely hasn't even seen the movie.

The original movie barely has any tits, Motoko isn't sexualized. It's not very artsy, it's a pretty linear and straightforward movie, albeit cryptic at times. Many Oshii films could definitely be pegged as artsy but the original GitS, not really. The only "artsy" moment is the boat scene which doesn't exactly eat up much runtime. SAC is way more up its own ass trying to be about philosophy, Oshii's original movie briefly touches on what it means to really be human in a world with cyborgs that advanced in a few scenes similar to and probably inspired by Blade Runner.
>>
>>13831439
Nobody is promised anything. Every day you wake up is a miracle. If a man wishes to abandon a work is isn't contracted to do, and you haven't paid for, he has every right to do so.

You're probably one of those Redditors that threw a two year shitfit when Jon left.
>>
>>13831590

A realistic straightforward movie can still be artsy.

None of the nudity is very blatant or sexualized but that doesn't really counter what that guy's saying about the movie's cultural placement. When I was young GitS was indeed "that movie with the robot chick and tits."
>>
>>13831628
It's a straightforward action movie heavy on dialogue. What exactly did you think was "artsy"?

>When I was young GitS was indeed "that movie with the robot chick and tits."
There's like... 30 seconds of tits? Maybe? As you said yourself, only a child would file the movie under "tits" because they were present for a few seconds of an 80 minute run time. Hardly a convincing argument, and definitely not why the movie became a big part of pop culture or what it's remembered for.
>>
>>13831582

Just like you with your non-arguments. What a shock.

The man's life's work was destroyed in an instant, that leaves you pretty fucking broken inside, imagine if you spent your whole adult life doing one thing that you loved, now imagine the product of your hard work being crushed into dust in seconds, guess what that fucks you up bad and makes it so nothing matters anymore.
>>
>>13831953
That's an excuse, at best an explanation, not a justification.
>>
>>13829748
You sound like a dipshit for saying that because that's the entire point of the film and one of its strong points. When you compare the Kildren characters with the others there's a world of difference.

Also, if you watched Steamboy, which in my opinion isn't that great and certainly isn't as nuanced as Sky Crawlers, the entire thing is full of crazy kooky people and explosions that's hard to call dull even if the plot wasn't all that great.

Personally I like bioth Shirow's original works and the Oshii adaptation.

There wasn't a word about oily horsecocks or anything like that.
Also, you may imply anything you want, but that doesn't change that every theme that GItS is based on was already well-developed by western authors. So where do you go from there? Copying only leads to degradation, you can do the trick once by adding a local flavor to a copy but it won't fly forever, as we see in the case of GItS franchise.

Dominion Conflict is the best thing Shirow has ever written. It actually makes sense on the first reading but it still has his trademark sense of humor and detail. I find it far superior to the original Dominion.

Of course it was also one of the last sane things he ever drew before the accident... before the dark times.

Orion is good too but it's fucking batshit crazy, even with the appendices it makes no sense, it's literally a giant mashup of Taoism, several kinds of Buddhism, Cthulhu mythos and his own ideas. I mean it's amazing, but even after having read it 5 times I still don't really understand anything other than the very basic gist of the plot.
>>
>>13829898
I like the Oshii movie but it's sad that we couldn't get a movie likethis, instead of a few garbled cutscenes that were super overproduced for a 320x240 PS1 game.
