They slimmed it down and used a different structure and construction technique because the original design was way too bulky to actually fight anything, where RA Godzilla has an opponent.
That said, while the puppet was awful and the suit looked horrifying from the front, its side profile actually doesn't look bad…

Try being the first toku in general. Sure other movies had done men in suits, but the way Tsuburaya did the effects of a large creature are what defined the genre, and other miniatures for all films as well. Godzilla pioneered in making THE definitive rubber-suited monster movie.

People often praise it to heck. Story and themes are interesting and the effects are great. But it's slow movie with tons of characters, so-so acting, odd music, tons of esoteric bullshit, and the director had a hard-on for aping 'murican action flicks because he was more into things like James Bond than Godzilla. It definitely tries to be serious, at least.

I rank it with Hedorah as one of the more unique entries, but it's nowhere near Hedorah's level of insanity.

I can hardly comprehend a Legendary Godzilla vs. Kong. How is a primate big enough to rival Godzilla going to fit into that movie's lore? Talk to me /m/, do we necessarily NEED Godzilla to fight another monster? Can a film be interesting/successful if he just blows up skyscrapers for an hour and a half? We're likely past the era where a giant monster can be used as an allegory for nuclear war or pollution and unless Anno decides to make a kaiju film about the horrors of overpopulation/mass immigration/ISIS/whatever, I don't see such a tactic being terribly interesting to moviegoers. It worked back in the 50's before kaiju films could really establish tropes, but these days it would likely just be a retread of the same message. The last two major kaiju films were Pacific Rim and Godzilla 2014, both of which were way more successful than they had any right to be given the shaky market for such films and both were a case of X vs. Y, and the new Gamera film is gonna be against Gyaos too. Cloverfield sorta pulled it off but it wasn't terribly well received nor particularly memorable.

Is there a valid strategy in breaking the established and popular mold of monsters fighting?

Giant monsters can still be metaphors and have it not be hokey.

It may already be 15 years ago, but GMK did a nice job with having the monsters be a way of talking about the dangers of willfully forgetting an ugly past.

But to your main question: Sure Godzilla COULD still be interesting if he's not fighting another monster or giant robot, but they'd really really really need a good human story to go along with it that interacted with big G quite a bit. But I hope he fights another monster because it's fucking cool. Also I like other monsters too besides G, so yeah.

Highly depends on the angle they're going for. 54 and 85 were great because they had a plot that justified there being only one monster. However after Godzilla killed Anguirus in Raids Again pretty early in the film it became a really boring retread of the original movie. I have a feeling the movie will do something neat enough to justify there being only one monster in it just on Godzilla's design alone.

Fans often cite Astro Monster's space-explorer buddies as being decent human protagonists, and while I can't for the life of me remember their names and that many specifics, I remember being entertained by them.

There are other examples that get brought up from time to time, but for the most part even the more memorable human characters haven't been particularly good.

Yeah, there are the ones from Heisei Gamera, but I've seen those movie so long ago that I don't want to comment on them.

The second Gamera movie has a human plot that's way more interesting than the monster plot. It honestly feels like they dug out some incomplete crime movie and then slapped in Gamera at the last minute to pad it out to feature movie length.

The series was coproduced with Konami, which made things a little weird when someone tried to license it a while back.
Toho does still include them in their monster manuals, though, so I'd expect they could do something again if they tried, but they super ignore their own TV properties when it comes to reviving characters.
