Which head type is the ultimate?
>>

Visor
>>
Visor>Mono>Mask>twin eye>Gundam>Brave
>>
Brave head with a faceplate that closes over it to make a Twin Eye or Gundam head. That way when the final battle gets really serious the faceplate can break and you have the Brave head underneath.
>>
>>13817910
So F91, G-Self, and Crossbone?
>>
Twin eye if you can find a clever way to combine it with sensor mask (Valvrave making the eyes and the v-fin loop for the titular machines one in the same come to mind)

Otherwise visor or monoeye. Actually, combine the two and do a compound eye band like some of the NEXT cores in Armored Core 4/4A have.

sensor mask, but only if it's smaller than 9m
>>
All of them, that's the only correct answer.

"gundam" head should have V-fin and faceplate, it's more defining that way.

DUAL MONOEYES
>>
>>13817897

There is basically never a reason to make the robots face look human, so don't. If I wanted to watch what looked like giant people fighting, I would be watching Ultraman. I want robots, so they should look like robots.

Sensor Mask, Visor, and Monoeye are great.

Twin eye and Gundam head are lame.

Brave is everything I dislike in robot design.

Blocky AC monoeye head >Zaku monoeye head
>>
>>13817971

At least arms and legs theoretically fill a function. Most mecha shows don't bother justifying it, but some do.

Making the robots head have a face on it is is purely so that kids can identify which one of them is the hero unit. Its a stylistic choice, 100%. And since damn near every show does the same thing, it gets boring.
>>
>>13817985

It always did weird me out that everything about the transformers was super mechanical looking and made of clearly distinct parts, until you got to the face which was perfectly flexible roboflesh that can make facial expressions and shit.
>>
>>13817996
Geara Doga > Zaku FZ Type B > Armored Core > Zeta 'crosshairs' Monoeyes (Ricardo Diego/Gaza Strip)
>>
>>13818002
What if a face-like structure actually breaks up radar reflections better than a smooth faceplate?
>>
>>13818002
>Making the robots head have a face
>purely so that kids can identify which one of them is the hero unit

Optimus Prime has a mask and Megatron has a brave face.

Optimus was the bad guy after all!!
>>
>>13818013
You got that backwards. Faces would scatter radiation to the winds, the faceplate would be stealthier from a RCS standpoint.

A head that can turn is the more "stylistic choice" thing actually. just having camera in all direction would be way more pratical than having the robot turning it's head.
>>
>>13818020
If it's angled properly, the math should work out regardless of how jagged it is.

But hey I tried, that's what counts. Personally I don't care for humanoid sensor setups, periscope cuboids are more my preference.

The best answer is always change. Put masks and visors on supers, put Brave faces on reals. Have the robot change heads midway through the show. Combine two styles (Banpresto got that with their love of mecha goggles).

Or hell, just go wacky and start doing things like Aquarion's head that has like eight eyes.
>>
>>13818102
Hunters' controls were fine unless you really bought into the idea that the only viable way to play was with carpal tunnel stylus aiming.

What it needed was a campaign that wasn't "fight the same two bosses four times each, then play Simon says with the final boss." Even Quake had more compelling game design going on.

Brave face all day every day. The mouth needs to move when the pilot speaks, too. Your machine is the manifestation of your soul and spirit!

I can agree that Brave faces are great, but I actually prefer the non-moving version. I have nothing against the more expressive Brave faces, but there's something wonderfully majestic about having a humanoid face simply sculpted onto the machine.

The great thing that makes the inhert so unique is that it's designed by Kaneko Kazuma of Shin Megami Tensei fame, which explains the valkyrie hood ornament, slick angular body, and really unconventional weaponry.

My favorite touch has to be the constellation motif, though.

MECHA ISN'T SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE CHILDREN'S TOYS! It's fucking giant robots! "Mecha" from "mechanical". Not "Plast" from "cheap plastic"! Sure, this is a commercial. Sure, toys are made from plastic. But in-universe representatives of those toys are supposed to look great. They should be big, mighty, tough, powerful. That's what makes someone buy a toy version - because the "real thing" is so damn COOL! And it's not cool when in-universe "giant robots" already look like plastic toys. It doesn't make me wanna buy toys. Why would I want a plastic toy of a plastic toy? Plastic toys are not cool!

It has to break through that many layers to reach the rapeface mode or else there wouldnt be the element of "remove the limiters" hype to it

Having the rapeface appear twice means that it gets forgotten and brushed off after the first layer goes. Then it's extra dramatic when it returns for the final go.

I'm sorry that you have a shit taste. Brave doesn't push mecha design forward, if anything the bombastic demands either appropriate real robot tropes that innovate the genre or push the genre in reverse.

Brave is bad for mecha.

HIVE MIND

I'm surprised I ended up ranking Gundam type so low. I really do love Gundam style heads, but if it isn't a Gundam series, it really shouldn't be copying the style. I ranked them with a generic mecha genre form of entertainment in mind.
>>
>>13817897

Twin is roughly equal to Visor all things considered. Everything else is absolute garbage that has no right to exist., and anyone who likes them has awful tastes in aesthetics.
>>
>>13831164

Please, it's not like you're inherently superior for hating BRAVE. If anything, you're not that special for it.

It's an aesthetic that's not that popular these days but has a place. Don't be a sheep or a hipster.
>>
>>13832775
>but has a place
No, it doesn't. It was awful back when it was used commonly, and fortunately for everyone they realized how bad is was and it has almost phased out of common use, as it deserves.
>>
>>13832785
