Dude, their fucking Japs. No one ever said that anime writers were good at what they do.

Also, the name of the Neo-Germany fighter is one of the least of G Gundam's problems.

To me, it was just a name, so I didn't think anything of it. I was in middle school, watching it on toonami. You think I was gonna ponder the meaning of names? I was in it for the glowing hands.
>>
>>13778196

You ever thought that perhaps "black" might be a stand-in for "shadow" instead, because it's how it's depicted in animation and images, a dark silhouette of a person, because this is what Schwarz is to the original Kyouji, unable to take a front and made as a last-ditch of the original, and therefore casually regarded as less substantial and thus a "shadow of his former self", and that he usual stays in the background, aka the shadows, and that he shadows Domon's actions several times throughout the show, watching from the shadows until he appears from nowhere, all of which are like how feudal spies/ninja/shinobi are commonly referred to as being in the shadows, the shadows to their lord, one with the shadow, etc. etc. e-fucking-tc.?

Did you fucking consider this fucking point of fucking view?
>>
>>13778288
Woah... deep
>>
>>13778288
You idiot.

If they really wanted to go with the "shadow" reference, Kyoji would've named himself Schatten Bruder or Dunkel Bruder.
>>
>>13778336

>Schatten
I said they wanted to use a STAND-IN, not call it out straight. Fingers flying across the keyboard faster than you can read my post?

>Dunkel
No, not really. "Black" is as legitimate a sideways reference to Schwarz's role as is "Dark". If you were there when there was a thread detailing Imagawa's thought processes on the production of G Gundam, it would have been clear that they're running a casual production. A simple "hm this seems out of place" is enough for them. This isn't some Evangelion-level triple-layer ref. sandwich infinity loop.

Like >>13778233, you would have a more legitimate position calling it out that there was a German contestant actually named Schwarz Bruder.
>>

Hey, don't you dis the Bruder clan! They've been German Ninjas for centuries now and will use their ninja powers on your ass.
>>
How did Kyouji know German ninjutsu?
>>
>>13778202

The audience was intended to be Japanese kids to teens, most of whom will never know a word of German and if they're learning a second language at all (many will be too young to have started doing so in a school) will be learning something like Chinese or English. The fact that an adult European or whatever you are knows what it means has no bearing on things because no-one making it cares whether you know it or not. Especially nearly 25 years after it was made in the first place.
>>
>>13778690

How do American kids know Asian martial arts? That's how.
>>
>>13778054
>not questioning why Germany would let a ninja-themed gundam represent their country and nobody would question their supposed national-hero's identity in the first place
>>
>>13778722
A ninja-themed Gundam had been representing them for years, possibly decades. Kyoji just stole that guy's identity.
>>
>>13778743
that's the point, why?

windmill and that mexican burrito gundam at least make sense because it actually represents their country somewhat, but a ninja for Germany?
>>
>>13778714
So Kyouji trained in German ninjutsu, and then just happened to transfer his conscience to a German ninja who's name was literally bad German for "Black Brother?"
>>
>>13778757
A better question is why some random german guy would call himself "Schwarz Bruder".
>>
>>13778677

Schwarz Bruder is more a Char clone than Ulube.
>>
>>13778761
It make sense to original audience because back in the days people outside of Japan aren't its main audience and even if the locals are skeptical they probably won't bother to check the name for accuracy because going to the library is a lot of work.

As someone who is Asian and watched G back when I was 7-8, as long as the name sounded foreign enough to me it made sense, you could call the ruskie Vlad Vodka and nobody would back an eyelid.

Vader means Father in Dutch. Not every reference is in Nazispeak.
>>
>>13779678
The myth was that it's "Dark Father" in German. And that brings us to how "dark" in Dutch is actually "donkel," not "darth."

Also Dutch isn't a language, it's just bootleg Deutsch.
>>
>>13779673
It isn't a myth, dumbass. Darth Vader undeniably means Dark Father. They just didn't intend for him to be luke's father until the next movie.

Literally every link says otherwise
>"'Darth' is a variation of dark. And 'Vader' is a variation of father. So it's basically Dark Father. All the names have history, but sometimes I make mistakes -- Luke was originally going to be called Luke Starkiller, but then I realized that wasn't appropriate for the character. It was appropriate for Anakin, but not his son. I said, 'Wait, we can't weigh this down too much -- he's the one that redeems him.'"
He made it up, dude.

It is. Schwarz Bruder was the actual Gundam Fighter for Neo-Germany. He got overwritten and made into a copy of Kyoji, but still entered the Gundam Fight under his original name. It is also true, however, that the writers thought this name was a clever pun considering Schwarz was a shade of Domon's brother.

This post was referring to the fact that anyone would know Kyouji's true identity if they knew that "Schwartz Bruder" was poor German for "Black Brother."
>"Darth Vader" actually means "Dark Father"
Now, anyone with at least one tenth of a brain would know that you could only spoil something with a phrase if it has literally any meaning outside of your own stupid fucking head. Because Lucas made up "Darth Vader," then yes, it's true, it does by technicality mean "Dark Father." Well, actually, it doesn't. What it means is that Lucas switched around some letters and thought he had a cool name, like Quattro Vagina. It doesn't actually mean "Dark Father" in any language living or dead, which is why literally every search result will tell you the same thing.
To reiterate: "Darth Vader" is a name that Lucas made up, and as such it couldn't have spoiled the movie, because it's not a translation of anything and as a result doesn't mean anything. Therefore, because nobody would be stupid enough to post something so ridiculously off-topic, you were implying that "Darth Vader" meant "Dark Father," possibly in some foreign language, which is also a popular myth that only stupid people believe.
>>
>>13779873

You're correct. The original Schwarz was killed and new one was basically the reanimated corpse made with DG cells and looks like Kyoji.
>>
>>13779927
>Now, anyone with at least one tenth of a brain would know that you could only spoil something with a phrase if it has literally any meaning outside of your own stupid fucking head
Just knowing "vader" was enough, really. Especially with Owen and Beru's comments about Luke's father.

I actually laughed out loud when I heard that Lucas was now claiming that the idea for Vader to be Luke's father came after the original Star Wars. He contradicts himself a lot, actually. For instance, he always said that he wrote a trilogy and presented it to the studio but they gave him such a long list of things that needed to be changed about it that he wrote a set of sequels to it rather than change what he had written. That's why the original Star Wars suddenly became "Episode IV: A New Hope" which was not seen in the original theatrical reels. He said that he had no idea why fans loved Boba Fett so much, since he was a nobody who just happened to be present when Vader captured Han Solo. And then when George makes what he claimed at the time to be his original story that he wrote before what we now call "the original trilogy" Boba Fett is now the one unmodified clone of the super-soldier selected to be the genetic template for an entire army that brought the empire to power. That's a pretty hefty "nobody". Then there's Obi Wan's "Was I any different when you taught me?" to Yoda, being contradicted by Obi Wan being Qui Gon's apprentice (unless you assume that Obi Wan was comparing late-teen Luke to himself as an eight-year-old). Never mind the fact that his original story "The Star Wars" is easily available if you want to read it (there was even a Dark Horse comic series) and bears almost no resemblance to the prequel trilogy.

And Schwarz Bruder is a mirror image of Kyoji Kasshu.

I'll just repeat what I said previously, the whole thing with Schwarz is a bunch of Lv.1 foreshadowing that is meant to reward people of that time who had basic knowledge of German at that time, and little else other than the director liking it. Anime/manga in general has had no qualms in borrowing foreign terms because they like the way it sounds, this is no different.

Seriously, /m/, these foreshadowing traits are basic as fuck, I ain't saying they're good or bad but these side-glance connections are the most basic you can get in storytelling, especially in G where the entire thing is a homage to wuxia movies and its physical predecessor, chinese street stageshows, where these kinds of naming and over-the-top action is common as fuck. The greater issue here is that there was an actual German called Schwarz Bruder; either that, or copy-Kyoji being the walking plot hook that he is, hacked the Neo-German fighter database or any other dozens of easily usable reason.

What is wrong with /m/ in this thread?
