Can I start the series at AC: Nexus and use the second disc as a recap of prior titles? I tried to play AC1 and it was kinda bad.
>>
Murakumo for life, Chrome a shit
>>
>>13775652
you could but nexus isn't exactly the greatest game, would probably be better to start at 2.
>>
>>13775652
AC3 & SL are basically reboots that follow an incredibly similar story line to AC1 but with better mechanics and a entirely new set of parts if thats your thing, most newer fans tend to gravitate towards anything from 3 on wards.
>>
>>13776092
>>13776203
AC2 is a good starting point, but I think AC3 is the better game. Problem is anything pre-Nexus will have you getting used to a rather archaic control scheme
>>
Heresy of the lot of you. Shame on you. Play them all and take off your mecha mini skirt

The fact that we are getting a new Ace Combat that is more true to the original games instead of the retarded AH one makes me hopeful that From will stop being gigantic faggots and make a new AC game instead of eternal souls games
>>
>>13778197
From's head honcho has said that das3 is going to be the last souls game. Hopefully that means more ac or another mech game.

Friend just sold me a PS3. Are any of the next-gen Armored Core's worth owning?

I heard V was multiplayer heavy, gonna bet the servers are already down.
>>
>>13778634
He actually included Bloodborne in that statement.
>>
>>13778652
4 and 4A are okay if you want to go fast. V/VD have shit singleplayer, only bother if you have buddies to play with. The first game's also on PSN, no PP or MoA yet though.

Slightly related, be sure to pick up Demon's Souls if you haven't already. It's one of the best games for the system and has a couple of 4A references to boot.
>>
What's the difference between the first game and Project Phantasma?

PP added a fuckton of new parts. So much so that it made the game unbalanced to some degree. This is because Kawamori joined the team and they used all his designs to make new parts.

Also they added a story featuring a voiced antagonist and a waifu with unique AC's.
>>
>>13778960
>V/VD have shit singleplayer, only bother if you have buddies to play with.
Guess I wasted my money then, damn.
>>
>>13779091
Not that anon but V/VD have solid single-players. Sure their shine the most in team based multiplayer but it's still worth a playthrough.
>>
>>13779097
VD's single player is alright, but V's was pretty tough to stomach.
>>

>Have double digit armor left

>Second Nine Ball appears
>Fucks me before I can even think

After that, I just dodged the first one by dropping straight down the hole.

The second one was a bit hairier because my thrusters couldn't carry me to the top without a large recharge time, but once I got up there, his AI struggled to make it up the hole. I positioned myself down the hallway and when he got up there I fired the gatling gun and took him down no problem.

Fuck that mission.

"To treasure a life....is that something to laugh at?"

I love so much of the voice acting in those games because of how well it conveys character or mood with such minimal input.
>>
>>13779480
Eh, 4's is only tough on hard mode, and if you can reach 4A's then you should have the means to cheese it.
>>
Yeah i liked 4A's Lynx small talk alot. ACV was pretty bland aside from the crazy AI's.
>>
>>13779872
The worst part about V's voice acting was that it had two female operators that were virtually indistinguishable from one another for quite a while. At least chief was good. Him, and the one zodiac voiced by Troy Baker.

>"I guess you really did give up everything for the project Ange. Your body, your brain.....your soul. But hey, who needs a soul, right? As long as you *win*."
>"Damn it, this has to be some kind of sick joke! We turned ourselves into puppets for *THIS*?! I CAN'T EVEN REMEMBER WHY!"

VD was a return to form though, Fatman and Maggie were great, especially since the later shared a VA with the best operator of all, Serene Haze.
>>
>>13779902
I never tried VD. ACV left me burned abit.

Though i heard the last boss is some kind of edgy supped up White Glint. That true?
>>
>>13779872
I like the part where Donald Trump stumps Lynx
>>
>>13779920
Yeah, I felt the same way about V. VD got be back into the series though. It polished a lot of V's issues (including balancing parts, making the main missions shorter and less tedious and the side missions longer and more varied and having an incoherent story). It also had heavily customizable AI controlled partners, the UNACs, the tweaking of which is a whole game in and of themselves.

>Though i heard the last boss is some kind of edgy supped up White Glint. That true?
Yes. Though even fighting a genuine NEXT in a regular AC is pretty cool to have.
>>
>>13779149
I actually like V's lengthy missions in single player mode than the usual short burst missions that ended in few seconds we got in other games
>>
>>13779983
They just dragged on and on. I replayed the early train mission on a friend's save, and was astonished at how much fire it took to wer it down, even with the best weapons available at the time, add to that it running in circles made for an extremely tedious experience. And only the main missions were long, the side ones had the opposite problem of throwing you against small numbers of the same three enemy types over and over for 40 motly interchangeable missions, with another 40 of arena fights and few zodiacs.

VD still had some decent length missions, just not 'travel to different map region in real time levels of length', and the side ones were varied enough to stay fresh, at least to me.
>>
>>13779474
Not really beyond the convenience of having it on your PS3, it's just direct emulation of the original game. The DS3 is great for classic AC though because of that glorious D-pad.
>>
>>13780027
I played Silent Line on Vita, and that game has so many left arm guns that I can't imagine doing it on a conventional AC playstation controller set up.

>“When the design for Armored Core was requested to me, it was before the original PlayStation was launched. There were quite a lot of unknowns and there were ideas for separate parts, such as arms, feet and weapons and so on. These then had to be combined by the player on their own.”

>“However, if you allow a player to create their own mecha it makes it very hard to give it a sense of visual identity. Such as clearly differentiating from other mecha anime and games. I also thought that other games would follow suit when this was released.”

>“As I believed that this idea should differentiate this game from the rest of its competition, I proposed the concept of the “armored cores”. Meaning that of the core block with cockpit and engine as well as the joint connectors for head, arm legs, weapons and so on. They adopted the proposal and called it Armored Core as a consequence.”

I just couldn't hit them.

I had gotten decent at lining up sniper shots. I could even go through Occupation and White Glint on hard without missing a shot.

But against those super fast zippy mechs online I'd never make my shots. And then before I knew it my mid-weight mech was caught in a storm of vertical missiles.

Front Mission fan here (please don't be rough), does Armored Core get much easier to control? I played the first game a while ago, and found myself only barely getting through some missions, without much improving.

I just want a nice story-filled mecha action game, but the closest I've gotten was Ace Combat.
>>

It takes a little bit to get used to the controls, but you'll be proficient by the time you have to fight anything that need you to look up and down during battle.

Or are you complaining about some other aspect of the controls?
>>

You can remap every function to your liking, but it really just takes getting used to. If you really can't adapt Nexus onwards supports analog control.

It wasn't so much the up and down, but more like just not feeling as much in control. Would try to strafe attack someone but would still end up pretty damaged throughout any encounter I went through. I saw in the thread that 3 is like a remake of 1 or something, I'd have played 4 by now since a friend recommended it to me before, but I'd hate to miss out on any story bits.
Maybe it'd be best to just jump to PS2?

Not getting hit in AC is less about moving fast and more about never ever moving in a straight line for an extended period.

>I saw in the thread that 3 is like a remake of 1 or something, I'd have played 4 by now since a friend recommended it to me before, but I'd hate to miss out on any story bits.
There's three primary story arcs as such. The original AC through AC2AA, AC3 through Last Raven, and AC4 through Verdict Day. You can start at the beginning of any of them and not miss anything. Additionally, the links between the PS1 games and AC2/AC2AA and between AC4/4A and ACV/VD are weak enough that you can still enjoy the story just fine.

Well I'm not too sure either. Heard it from /vg/ and /v/ but never tried it out.

That said Nexus/NB/LR are playable in software mode just fine http://wiki.pcsx2.net/index.php/Armored_Core:_Last_Raven. It requires a decent rig though.

AC games up to Nexus are much more easily emulated because of the simpler engine so I see no reason to play 3 and SL on the PPSSPP. Especially considering shittier visuals and controls. A bunny head and two extra arena opponents are not really that worth it.

So we all know that a truly open-world AC game wouldn't work.
But what I'd like to see is if they took a little bit of influence from Bloodborne and instead of navigating a menu, made a hub world instead, like a Global Cortex headquarters or something. You can create your character, change his pilot suit based on corporate affiliations or whatnot, talk to NPCs and occasionally get challenged in the arena, walk to the garage to look at/work on your AC, go to the briefing room to select missions, visit your operator, occasionally see other players walking around
>>

I really, really like the efficiency of AC's menu hub. What you're asking for is modern bloat. It works well in Demon's Souls because it fits the environment and setting, it's completely inappropiate for Armored Core. And there won't ever be anything more appropriate than what it already is.
>>
>>13799016
I don't know, that's one of the things I really like about Armored Core's storytelling.

They could be reintroduced though, since NEXTs are not only polluting but also phased out in V. Also if they all went into underground after VD because of the ruined surface it makes sense to use tech that's more suited for enclosed spaces. Also it would fit FROM's boner for cycles.
>>
I tend to prefer the simpler answer that ACs are all in order as it fits the tech progression of the games easier regardless of plot.

I also wish we'd get more resolution to the V series, Lost Day sounds like a game outline even and VD came nowhere near resolving the overarching storyline between the three parts and left dangling threads like the space hangar.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to refute the connection, just bring up more evidence of their presence in those games. >>
>>13814724
>>13814755
Yeah, wait until you have some arena cash to play with, then experiment a bit and see what works for you. Your machine will gradually warp into its final configuration as your preferences settle.

I'd start with machineguns, can't go wrong with them, they're good for just about every situation in just about every game.
>>
>>13815004
Yeah, but they murder your wallet if you're not well versed in how to conserve ammo with them.

A good laser or pulse rifle for missions will do you and your bottom line a world of wonder.
>>
>>13815004
So with the arena, I could just grind for a bit at first, while also getting used to the controls more? Or do only new fights give money?
>>
>>13815098
I never found that myself. Once I got the MG-500 I basically used it the whole game and I never noticed any significant finance drain, and I was just spraying away with it. The MG-1000 was the expensive one, but that's hardly new game equipment anyway.

This is a matter of personal preference, really. Energy weapons can help you scrounge cash and are often fairly powerful, but in exchange empty your precious boost meter, and having both your mobility and offence draw from the same source is often a liability. Expert players can make it work extremely well, but it's hardly the one true option.

A machingun on the other hand is easy to use and effective. Ammo is generally cheap, even for a lot of rounds, they can do a disgustingly huge of cumulative damage very vast, and accuracy isn't a problem because the few bullets that miss count for a lot less than a missed shot from a more powerful weapon.

>>13815120
You can replay any arena fight for practice, but won't be awarded for it, only new fights give money. However, you don't lose any money if you get beaten in the arena, so you can throw yourself at it as much as you want until you win, and operating costs are free as well, so it's a good way to earn some cash early on if you don't want to do missions with the shitty starting AC. The E rank prizes may not seem like much, but you get a lot more as you go up the ranks.

In 3 you do get stopped at certain points up the arena ladder and have to go do more missions to be allowed to progress, but by the time you hit that point you should have plenty of cash to play with.
