Seriously, that was awful. Did they not realize how cringy that soundtrack was?

See, the soundtrack was actually one of the things I liked about it. I mean, I didn't think it fit some scenes as well, but it was some damn good music on its own.

It was like a callback to the UC OVAs. Good soundtrack, great action, just not a story or cast to get that invested in.

Still, at 15 minutes for four episodes, I'll kick back and enjoy the MS porn.
>>
>>13763987
>Did they not realize how cringy that soundtrack was?
I'm not super well versed in jazz, but isn't it just bebop? Don't see what's so cringy about that.

The episode itself was pretty decent. Too early to make any real judgments.
>>
>>13763987

The thing I didn't like about the episode was the goddamn tactics.

>But as someone who actually fucking knows jazz, this was shit. Shitty derivative jazz for a mediocre cringe fest

You are only cringing because you're a fucking snob. YES it was bebop/postbop/hardbop not freejazz, but so what? If you expect the studio to include freejazz into a Gundam anime then you are 100% retarded. And if you really think freejazz would of been better then you have absolute shit taste. A bunch of random notes would of killed every fucking scene, you fucking retard.

With that said I still would like to see some recognition of Sun Ra's existence, not even in this anime specifically (though I think some Arkestry would fit perfectly), but in any Sci Fi media. Just a character saying "Space is the Place" would make me cum buckets.

The series is ongoing, but the anime will only cover the part that takes place during the One Year War. For whatever reason, some people here thinks that the OYW continues on Thunderbolt, but that isn't the case. It ends with the armistice between the Federation and Republic of Zeon after A Bao A Qu. The second part involves hunting down Zeon remnants on earth as well as dealing with a faction in Asia that plans to secede from the Earth Federation after the War.

Apparently so.

I mean Thunderbolt is seriously just embarassing. I know the integrity of the Gundam franchise hasn't really been that strong in a long time, but the storytelling in Thunderbolt being 50 steps BACKWARDS from a 1979 anime just kind of irks me.

People die in Gundam, sure, but it was usually to make a point. Even when a death was drastic (Miharu anyone?) it was to advance someone's character (Kai in that case) or make a point about how innocent or good people don't always get the good end of things. Or something like Ramba Ral going sudoku, it taught us a lot about who he is and what he believed in.

You can read a few things into 0079 but Thunderbolt (and sadly, people who complain about mecha anime) seem to have this idea that more killing is more realistic or somehow more interesting than less. When really it's a cheap device to shock people who don't know any better or sincerely believe what I just described. The same people who think "understanding" is a ridiculous idea and that teenagers in mecha anime are dumb, and that old men and flat static characters would be more enjoyable and 'mature'.

Thunderbolt is like a 15 year old who smokes cigarettes. It doesn't make you cool, you retard. Do YOU want 15 year olds to smoke cigarettes?
>>
>>13775679
Given that assessment, what do you think of Front Mission: Dog Life & Dog Style from the same author?
>>
>>13775690
I've never read it, so I can't say anything.

And that's just my opinion on Thunderbolt as it relates to the Gundam anime franchise. Maybe Front Mission is different.
>>
>>13775695
Well, I'll tell you right off the bat that the manga is more violent and raunchy than the rest of the FM franchise. Take that as you will.
>>
>>13775690
That explains a lot.
>>
>>13775707
Stuff like that has a right to exist and be enjoyed (obviously), alternate interpretations of existing media is just fine, I even encourage it.

But it just seems so backwards for Gundam, and to have THAT of all things enter the pantheon of anime series that people can chose to watch.

Front Mission though, and Dog Life & Dog Style, I can't say anything about what I might think. Maybe it's done really well! Maybe it has meaningful killing and sexual themes.

Thunderbolt doesn't, in my mind. It's extremely superficial.

Io Flemming is such a huge piece of arrogant shit. This series genuinely makes the viewer cheer for the Zeon characters.

The story deliberately shows the characters from Zeon side, the most noble and pure, but Io become a great character as the story progresses. He remains arrogant, but has a personality with good and bad sides.

When I look, Daryl really looks like the male variant of the "girl next door".
But he character is all about the guy who constantly sacrifice himself for another person.

He join the army ranks, because he ill father would have hospitalar treatment.

He got his limbs torn off, not by own choice, so he can fight the gundam.

Its a bit tragic when you stop to think, that even if he dont like war, after the war he cant just surrender and come back home to his family, because he is ambulant army project. If he surrender, the federation would take out his prosthetic limbs to study them, if he try to run away from the zeon remnants, they would hunt him, because you just cant let a secret militar project on the loose. More than that, karen is also mentally ill now, and in the care of the remnants.

A cornered bastard, that the only viable option is fight, and even so, he maintain a calm and passive personality, maybe that why I personally prefered him, as a character, over Io.

Its not teen crying all over the situation, its not a aborrecent, it's not a autistic character that accept everything he is commanded, and its not a edgy guy, all over the top.
>>
>>13765401
People talk about the music not just because it featured prominently but because it's an actual motif in the story. Did you not get that from the whole "douchebag maverick with mad skills who happens to like jazz" becomes the rival of "nice guy sniper who likes idol pop music" thing?

The first episode made it clear that the antipathy Darryl has towards Io isn't just because he shot his CO in the head or even that he insulted his prosthetics; it's because their personalities are fundamentally incompatible with each other, and the music they like is a not-so-subtle representation of that fact.
>>
>>13775679

It's war. People die in war.

In fact, a LOT of people die in war. Viewers just want verisimilitude. Otherwise, it's all just fronting: Gundam has very, very heavy plot armor on protagonists, so this is a refreshing change.

Even 0079 had a lot of death in the most famous sequence: The huge battle at A Bao Qu. Did you miss the part where half the cast cacked it in one extended sequence? Even the villain died.
>>
>>13776054

It's because most of /m/ likes to see itself as the brooding underdog chosen by destiny. Io is what a protagonist would really be like; a swaggering alpha male who's confident, is likeable, loves his job, isn't particularly troubled by dirty work, and would likely shove them into garbage cans.
>>
>>13778006
Yes, in fact he's a "fucking nothing" guy. A male Pollianna thrope. The story just try so hard to make the Zeon poor good guys pitiable.

>>13778046

>>13777550

>>
>>13778046
>Io
>likable

Except for the part where, Cornelius aside, just about everyone else who works with him is in varying degrees of 'hates his guts', to the point where a few have already stated it's no skin off their nose if he gets killed.

>>13778042
>Did you miss the part where half the cast cacked it in one extended sequence?
>half the cast

When you say 'half the cast' that usually infers the established named characters rather than the huge swaths of extras.
In terms of named characters, you can say maybe five died at ABQ. Of those, only four were characters we knew much of before the battle. In fact, Twanning, the fifth, was made JUST for that storyline.

Plus, that was the end game. People kind of expect shitloads of death at a moment like A Baoa Qu because that's kind of meant to be a gamechanger. It's something where that level of gravity and shock is a desirable side effect.
A Baoa Qu is supposed to feel like a horrific kill fest because, much like Grypps and Axis in later installments, it's a desperation battle. Factions have everything riding on its outcome and as such, they're throwing everything they have into it, because they know if they give an inch here, the war may as well be lost to them.
If you do that in EVERY battle, it loses

It's a dash of realism to be used sparingly. If every battle is just throwing 50+% of your characters into the meat grinder, the whole thing loses its impact pretty quickly and moments that are supposed to be shocking turns of fate instead become little more than "But for me, it was Tuesday" deal.

Also, in a case like this, it then risks exacerbating that feeling of protagonist plot armor since now said character is coming through odds that are regularly slaughtering THAT many more characters.

Versimilitude is a nice idea, but it's something that really requires a careful hand from a storytelling standpoint.
>>
>>13778945
*If you do that in EVERY battle, it loses its impact, and what was once shocking becomes staid - one loses a reason to become invested in characters because we're too ready for the author to bump them off for no other reason than 'because it's what makes war realistic'.
>>
>>13778042
You're right about the REAL war thing, but we're talking about effective storytelling. >>13778945 Basically got the words out for me.

If viewers really want the 'verisimiltude' in their shows, then by all means they can have it any I hope they enjoy it.
