I understand if you hate CGI because it's too jarring or doesn't mesh well with the 2D characters, but saying Macross has no good action scenes anymore is kind of silly. The fight choreography is still pretty good. If anything I'd argue it's better since they can change forms more frequently compared to previous 2D Macross shows and that really shows off what a variable fighter can do.

OP here, Unicorn is pretty inconsistent really. That webm is compressed about 12x over though and it's got a lot of bit starvation--the part with Loni in particular. The edges on the Unicorn look pretty bad too.

The problem is that, as with a lot of Orange's works, there's a really jarring sense of visual spectacle that undermines the flash of it all.

If I had to describe it, it's as if the camera were coupled to the cgi models by an invisible arm, creating this artificial feeling center of motion located at the lead mech of a given setpiece. In my opinion they should aim to have the camera feel as untracked from the cgi assets in motion, that the viewpoint should have its own sense of weight and physical presence rather than being glued to an actor-entity.

To phrase my gripe another way regarding that webm: Lancelot doesn't move, it makes the world and all other KMFs move around it while it strikes random poses to feign the illusion of movement. Planet Express Ship motion.

I would think visual spectacle and flash go hand in hand, though. I get what you're saying about the camera being focused on a singular point, but I just don't think of it as an issue. That particular fight scene was basically "Lancelot duels a bunch of faceless mooks" so I think it makes sense that the action is focused on one mech. If there were other major characters all participating in some frenzied brawl, then a focused camera wouldn't work as effectively, though.

Yes, it's pretty great. Imagine Gundam updated for the 21st century(not like SEED's shitty attempt though), if you like electronic music, surfing/long boarding, you will enjoy it even more, they through in allot of references. Renton is arguably the only weak character which makes sense (because it is a coming of age story so whiny pilot is kindah needed) but he makes an excellent arc and you really feel his growth after 50 episodes(similar to amuro or Daisaku and NOT like Kira/Eggs kun etc). On top of all that you get a great world and BONES animating at their best. 1 skippable episode with the other 49 providing good character development and world building.

I think it wasn't the recoil, but more of an "electrical" reaction to it being rated for NT-D mode.
Even if I'm just misreading that, I'm pretty sure there's more kick from a laser that was able to punch through a Mobile Armor than there is pull from a Gundam that still has dampeners and other bullshit. It also wasn't falling for very long and it isn't shown whether Delta Plus reflex grabbed, or if Riddhe chased after it for a moment. If he did chase it, their inertia would've been comparable and the force required to grab and decelerate (not stop immediately).

Riddhe was never really based. He was always a somewhat mildly selfish, but well-meaning hero wannabe that went through Unicorn's events treating it like it was basically *his* story; the politician's son that left the family tradition to become something more akin to what he viewed as "heroic".

When he finds out his ancestors are somewhat half-responsible for some of the worst events in UC history, he becomes a lot more jaded and adopts a more determinist view on things. Banagher, in contrast, doesn't treat things like some kind of personal quest, and instead does what he can to protect the people he cares about in spite of things like sides or politics, and respects the wishes of others. When Mineva says she's going with Riddhe to stop the conflict on Earth, notice he shows no hints of jealousy or hesitation, but instead makes sure it's what she wants and thinks is right.

Fast forward to Loni, he refuses to fight in the middle of the populated city because A. A battle between them would do a far more damage to the city, especially if he hits the reactor by mistake, B. The Beam Magnum might not be enough with those beam reflectors active anyway, as only a direct hit is enough to stop the Shamblo, and C. He believes he can calm her down, because he can tell her hatred is something someone else burdened her with (to his credit, it mostly works until Kirks dies.) Riddhe, who is simiarly burdened with someone else's baggage, is less enthusiastic about the idea due to his newfound view on the matter and pulls the trigger the second he notices an opening (to *his* credit, Loni didn't want to live anymore, anyway.)

Fast forward to episode 5, Mineva rejects him in favor of Banagher's determination and faith in humankind, which aligns him against her due to his knowledge of the box and the dangers it presents to the Earth Sphere, which is the exact opposite of what he wanted for both of them. Then and he gets the absolute piss beat out of him, adding salt to the already sizeable wound in his personal pride.

Any sense of honor and duty he had has been replaced with shame, self-loathing, and anger at Banagher and Mineva's naivete. Any sort of starry-eyed goals he had in his military career has been replaced with this revolting responsibility to protect a dirty secret and the collection of politicians that fear it's power, both of which he finds sickening. His newfound hatred for Newtypes isn't necessarily born of elitism, but of the fact that if it weren't for them and Deikun's retarded idolization of them and the enemy's retarded idolization of his teachings, he wouldn't be in this shameful position to protect the secret of Laplace's box.

I actually find Riddhe to be one of one of the most fascinating characters in the Universal Century lore, but I'd hardly call him based. His role in the novel is even better, especially since Loni's a lot less of a rushed, retarded character. I'm definitely interested in the role he'll play in this Unicorn sequel/epilogue.
