So, what i wanna do here is start a conversation about cockpits. Design, functionality, etc.

It may be a little controversial but, as much as i love cyberpunky cockpits like pic related, i don t think they would be actual useful in a mech. I mean, you can manouver a tank with those for sure, but for high paced mech combat gundam gangnam style they wouldn t realistically do the job. How could two levers that go forward and backward be able to translate all of the movements two arms and hands (not even talking about fingers de fuck) can make?
Mechs have realistic and human movements. I think to be able to get a result like that a cockpit should be designed like the ones of the orbital frames from ZOE and have deep connections with the pilot s central nervous system so that he can move his mech mainly with his thoughts than his actual movements.
What does /m/ think?

Most of those are pre-programmed. We never see Gundam do anything exceptionally articulate aside from "grab thing," which can be done by the onboard AI that Amuro couldn't stop jerking off. It's not like they're painting or anything-- video game controls should do the trick. In the more super robot-focused series like Wing and 00 Evangelion or Gunbuster controls would be better. Actually, Gunbuster probably has my favorite cockpit.

I feel like having VR headsets instead of a bunch of screens is a pretty interesting solution.
>>
>>13733058
Doesn't something like that actually exist? The design was right out of VOTOMS
>>
>>13733025
>We never see Gundam do anything exceptionally articulate aside from "grab thing,"
how about every time they do a hand motion like the high five in G-reco and the thumbs up in Unicorn?
>>
>>13733581
oh and the getter armageddon clusterfuck of levers is the best cockpit ever
>>
>>13733581
G-reco was weird

>>13733590
Armageddon had the best looking cockpits, but I also like the way Getter form is pre-selected using levers.
>>
>>13733581
Those would be pretty easy to pre-program too.
>>
>>13733469
Well, there have been a few studies of headsets that would let the pilots look through their plane to see what's under it, etc.

I think I also read about some army experimenting with Oculus Rifts in their tanks to give the crew a better view of the vehicle's surroundings since that's been a problem with armored vehicles like forever.

>>13733058
>>13734127
Now I'm tempted to make a Cardboard app that replicates the Tieren's AR "HUD" and stuff.

The same way robotic limbs already do that?
>>
>>13734766
This, it's like people who are confused about the whole 'how move limbs' deal forget that industrial robot arms have existed for over fifty years and this isn't even an issue. The algorithms to do it aren't even complicated. At all.

I don't care how much sense it does or doesn't make, I love Big-O's cockpit.
Mostly for the pull back and punch motion it delivers, but it's nice otherwise too.

Even though Gunbhster didn't have a wealth of designs, I've always loved the grunt cockpits. The red light up displays, the cramped data-heavy interior was very cool. Also loved the viewscreen that resembled a porthole, and the way the cockpit opened too.

Props to VOTOMS for one of the best cockpit designs out there. The way is integrated into the torso is very cool.

I always liked the design of the Gardes cockpit. That and the Kataphrakt cockpits from Aldnoah. Zero.

I dig what we saw of the ASE cockpits in Neo Ranga. They usually gave it a nifty start up animation.

also, literally in the first episode of gundam 0079 a pair of zaku just casually go around diverting each others rifle to stop the other from shooting, they open dors with precise movements of their hands,...

>pre program
>>
>>13736478
well, it was the gundam that pioneered most of the computerization, wasn't it?
Zaku's were supposed to be much harder to pilot.
>>
Has there been an mecha that uses a technology similar to that helmet that the american air force uses where you can look at where you target is for the target lock?
>>
>>13736551
Macross has eyeball tracking for the missile target lock, does that count?
>>
>>13735431
The anime did the Guardian cockpits very well, I'll give them that. The classic Type 17 was also nicely modeled. Shame that they dumped the Type 19 and HCP, skipping right to the godawful Tsugumori-2.

how the fuck do you pilot a mech with controls like those
>>
>>13736670
You pull or push what ever levers you need for any given action.
>>
>>13736670
You just have to believe in the Getter, anon.
>>
>>13736670
the only ones who can pilot the Getter are the superior pilots
OR INSANE
>>
>>13736478
>aim
>use commo-rose or similar to select gesture
>hat switch for gesture direction
You could do a lot with just that, especially most grabbing motions.
>>
>>13736697
It would be too limited. I think that mechs should at least have a high sensitive system that embraces both the arms of the pilot. Using pre programmed gestures is just too random and have a narrow field of operativity
>>
>>13733581
>how about every time they do a hand motion like the high five in G-reco and the thumbs up in Unicorn?

>Wut is scripting.
>>
>>13736372
>>13736478
context-sensitive tasks.
simply put, on a very basic level, it's what your OSes do when you double click on various files with different extensions and it selects the proper program to open it.
definitely extendable to adjusting different set of options related to interacting with the detected visible object.
user actions like head motions might also help with the decision.

technology might not be there just yet, but it's not impossible. in fact, most of engineering problems are caused by power and material, not logic.

>>13734127
there was talk of implementing this in the F35, but i"m not sure what ever came of it.

Augmented vision is the future, however eye strain is a concern so a cockpit with good visibility is never going away. Makes me wonder why there aren't more mechs designed to be operated unbuttoned. I know it happened on occasion with Gundam, but it's all I can think of atm.
>>
>>13734750
The Gundams in IBO like Barbatos also seem to use retinal projection like in Muv Luv. At least Barbatos does. Not sure about Gusion. They have screens too so I guess the pilot has a choice whether to use retinal projection or look at the screens and can switch between.
>>
>>13740217
The Alia-Valaya system or how the fuck it OS called it s a great human-mech interface even if it s not easy to implant it
