Look at it this way:
If he watches the films and likes it, he can still step up to the fully expanded story in the series. If he watches the series first, then the movies are only recap episodes with some new animation.
I would never tell someone not to watch the series, but there's nothing wrong with starting with the films.

One thing, though: the english dub in the films is terrible, while the one for the series is very good. If you're going to watch the films for any reason other than to laugh at them, watch them subtitled.

TV Zeta is great, the movies are'nt nearly as good of a substitute for it as the movies are.

Either first stretch of the TV series or the first movie.
The episodes that cover the middle section.
