Fukuda has said that he first pitched Cross Ange around the time the SEED movie was shut down. No one wanted to make CA but he persisted, and finally in late 2012 he was given the greenlight.

The year before, Banrise decided to celebrate SEED's 10th anniversary by releasing the show on BD. Upon realizing that the show they paid so much for (3x the average anime budget) would look horrid on BD, they decide to reanimate as much as they can in a Remastered version. They have Fukuda helm the project, his first work since SEED Destiny.

Remaster sells, Banrise gives Fukuda CA to shut him up. They don't let him direct either, not wanting a repeat of Destiny's behind the scenes fiasco. CA ends up with only average sales figures, but Fukuda tells his fans it was successful enough that they could make more. He goes on to bemoan Sunrise instead wanting to focus on "a long running series."

Yeah, CA was probably a favor and nothing more. I sincerely doubt he'll get work anytime soon.

Cyber Formula worked because Fukuda had something like 3 silent co-creators and had nothing to do with the writing up until SIN. When SIN came out and he was put in full command and made his wife in charge of the script the series went downhill after that. (Re-Watching the whole series again recently made me realize that Gundam SEED & Destiny were just bits and pieces of various CF story arcs spliced together and given Gundams instead of super robot-like cars.)

Fukuda reminds me a little of George Lucas almost: You could see a lot of passion and actual talent in his earlier works (CF up to the ZERO OVA, Dendoh), but later on he got full of himself, starting taking credit for others ideas and let his status as "The Guy"/"The Director" get to his head and cloud his judgement (CF SAGA & SIN, SEED & SEED Destiny).

Post SEED, Fukuda has said he intended to bring Gundam back to it's roots and specifically mentions wanting it to be like shows like Combattler V. Anyone who knows anything about the creation process of 0079 knows that it was made in an attempt to break away from those kinds of shows.

Both have made some controversial changes to their works in later edits. Han not shooting first, Nicol's death looking like an accident.

Star Wars, from all reports, was only made watchable through the efforts of the editors. Major contributors to Gundams SEED's success was the musical/voice talent, character/mecha designs, even the melodramatic dialogue played a part in it (This was before Morosawa took over scriptwriting duties in Destiny). I don't think Fukuda played that much of a role, he didn't want to make SEED a war story but had to be convinced otherwise. He just gets credited because he's the guy in charge of the more talented people.

Celebrity and A-List VAs ate up a bunch of it. Also, the OST. Considering how behind schedule the show was, I'd think they would have brought in more animators to make up for lost time... but then we have animators saying Fukuda insisted on stock footage and reusing as much SEED footage as he could. I mean, we never got that heavily damaged SF vs. heavily damaged Destiny fight they advertised going into the finale.

Here's a crazy thought; Those numbers are just how much of a budget he has for each episode, not how much he spent. What if Fukuda was trying to come in under budget in order to make himself look good? He was talking about making a new Cyber Formula in the Kyoto QnA, so maybe he thought if he saved money on Destiny he could get a new series on TV?

Also, Destiny was the final nail in Cyber Formula's coffin.
