Small photo dump incoming.
Some Japanese guy was nice enough to take pictures of all the pages this dinosaur of an artbook that dates back to the end of L-Gaim in the mid-80's. Strangely enough, all the text is in English, and even though these are small pictures, they're large enough for the text to be legible.
What's interesting about it is that this book is the one that Banpresto took the Blood Temple design from when they accidentally put it into SRW 4 as an L-Gaim mook. What's even more interesting is that the book itself is basically a prequel series to L-Gaim about how Poseidal took over the galaxy, and is basically Nagano's version of how certain events took place with L-Gaim. If you're familiar with FSS timeline, especially the later dates, then yes, this is indeed where all the ideas for it came from. I can kind of see why Nagano got so mad at Banpresto for taking the Blood Temple from this, because it has very little to do with L-Gaim itself other than some named characters and mechanical designs, and because it's so close to what would become FSS.

The famous Blood Temple itself, which would later become what we all know as the LED Mirage.

Poseidal's Floating Temple
>>13710197
Poseidal and his two Fatimas, Lachesis and Atropos.

The "Ghast Temple", or the L-Gaim version of what we now know as the Terror Mirage. It looks like it's based off of the Vatshu (L-Gaim ver) as well.

This is the first part that talks about Poseidal's invasion of the galaxy. "Coremu" seems to be the Pentagona equivalent of Joker Galaxy's Addler.

I -think- this is supposed to be planetary debris, but I can't tell for sure. Anyway, this marks the part where Lachesis gets blown off to another galaxy.

A damaged "Emper Temple", or the L-Gaim version of the Jagd Mirage.

L-Gaim Mk-II, piloted by Leccee. What's interesting about this version is that it doesn't transform at all.
I'd heard rumors about how Nagano had always wanted the Mk-II to be piloted by Leccee instead of Daba in the show, but was rejected by sponsors, so I guess this confirms it.

Very interesting design for an "L-Gaim Mk-III". This is the L-Gaim equivalent of FSS's Wunderschatze fighter.

>dat beautiful green

And last but not least, the Knight of Gold itself, unnamed as of this time. If Banpresto had used this in SRW, I'm sure Nagano would have personally tried to bomb their whole building.
Overall, really interesting stuff. With Nagano switching gears from L-Gaim to Mortar Headd and now Gothicmade, I think I can say that he's gotten better as an artists. But there's just something to these older designs I really like that I wish he would've maintained.

neat
this is cool thanks
>>13710237
His old designs were definitely better. They werehigh test. The new ones don't have that full-body thing they had going on before.

I meant the transition from HM to MH, not MH to GTM. I really don't care for his Gothicmade designs at all, and while I do like his Mortar Headds, there's a certain charm to the Heavy Metals that doesn't bring itself over to the Mortar Headds.

Eh, I'm afraid I can't really see where you're coming from. L-Gaim designs are bretty good, but they're too Gundam-y for the most part. He definitely perfected his style with FSS IMO.

Don't get me wrong, I think the MH look great. But the Heavy Metals have something about them that feels less refined and more mechanical, which I like. I feel like the Mortar Headds are just Evangelions wearing knight armor at times, given how outright organic they look.

Oh yeah, I get what you mean now. The Zeddas and Listas are a type of mecha design you don't see very often these days and are my personal favorites from L-Gaim.
Very cool stuff, cheers anon.

Woah, so Nagano wanted Nei, of all people, to be the one to end Poseidal? I've always felt that her character deserved better in the show, and looks like Nagano agrees.
Did someone say "Heavy Metal"?

Obari would draw some great Mortar Headds.
But man don't ever let him touch a Heavy Metal again.
