Gunpla / Plamo General

A New Year Edition

***READ THE GUIDE***

***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Our next Group Build!

Field Repair

Basically what this means is that rather than the mobile suit being fresh out of a factory, it's quite the opposite. Whether it's trudging through dense jungles or dodging debris in asteroid belts, your mobile suit has seen some better days.
You've been out in the field for quite a long time now, nearly half a year of active duty in the front lines and your personal mobile suit's pretty banged up. What's worse is the fact that there isn't a maintenance bay within several thousand kilometers of your local area that's capable of making any major repairs. Your unit's engineering crew has resorted to patch work and jury-rigging to keep your machine operational. Stray fire might have crippled its legs and arms or otherwise dealt considerable damage to a mobile suit's systems meanwhile some units have simply lost bits of armor and panels to the elements and have been forced to patch weld metal sheets over the exposed inner workings.
In any case it's beaten to hell but somehow you and your team have somehow kept it chugging along and now command's ordered all units operating in your theatre to fall back to form a defensive line against the enemy offensive.

Gato's colors on here aren't too bad, just wish there was good lineart for the Neue Ziel that I could shoop on here instead of leaving things up to imagination (They'd be the same Dark Green as the feet).

Where do you buy your gunpla /m/? I was picking some off Amazon but I want to do a bulk order for the suits I haven't snagged from MSG0079, Zeta, and ZZ (Gouf, Zaku II, Gaza-C, Gelgoog, Zeta w/ Titan Colors)

Hobbywave has a flat rate $12 shipping and an acceptable price bump, but takes forever.

Get a Z'Gok, it's the cheapest High-Grade kit, it's even less expensive than some of those weapon sets. Lots of segments to practice sanding on, and you can give it a Boss Borot paint scheme.

Canada, huh? Well, I'm not sure if Hobbywave's flat shipping fee is the same for Canada, but if not you can try AmiAmi and HLJ. They're both Japan-based, and the shipping might end up being as much as you're spending on kits depending on if you go with fast-but-expensive FedEx or slow-but-inexpensive SAL.

>>
>>13694104
You might be able to use Geara Zulu head if you are good at puddy and mods.
Take the blades from an Exia and throw it all on a Wing Gundam body. Then you basically have a Speigel
>>
What should be my next mg for this new year lads, I'm thinking a gundam of some type

100$? where the fuck are you shopping?

or were you just late to the party?
>>
>>13694492
>or were you just late to the party?

Yep. Even then, I remember the cheapest it was before was at Gentei for like $90 shipped.
>>
>>13693817
RGs are a love-hate relationship. I loved building my Exia and Zephyranthes, but they can be a little finnicky at times and I hated doing decals on the Exia, although I didn't mind the Zephyranthes. Old blocky UC vs modern edges and curves and shit, I guess.
>>
>>13694503
I think the RG design direction of multiple shades of the same color work best with UC blocky designs, not so much with post-Seed angular/curvy ones.

As big of a 00 fan I am, I feel their MGs are much better than the RG equivalents. Same goes for the Seed ones, even Freedom, which MG is from 2004.
In contrast, I think the only UC RG eclipsed by its MG counterpart is the RX-78-2, and that's because 3.0 is the same design but in a more stable and rigid 1/100 size.
>>
>>13694520
It also helps immensely with stickers. Detailing the GP01 with them is a fun and rewarding, detailing a Zaku II or the Exia with them is a nightmare.
>>
>>13694503
>>13694520
So, is the Wing Gundam Zero RG worth a damn? I've been thinking about picking it up.
>>
>>13694536
I found the head of Wing Zero very disappointing.
I don't know why though, I guess it's the front profile of the face that looks weird. And vents which really should not need lining. That was cheap.
>>
>>13694595
You think those are the only issues with it? Was everything else acceptable? And was the build enjoyable enough?

>>13694623
Pretty much, yeah. Everything else was either good or awesome, no minuses there.

Tangentially related due to being RG, but I absolutely hate RG 00 Gundam's proportions. Try comparing how curvy the outline of MG 00's legs are, to the almost triangular profile of RG 00 (the thick thighs and almost straight tapering of the calf).
Then there's the arms which look stumpy due to how thick they are left-to-right, compared to front-to-back.
The torso looks thick and blocky too, when it should not (compared to the MG, IMO).
Finally, the lock mechanism for the drive binders lock them in just two positions, meaning if you want to pose them in any other angle, there'll be an ugly gap in the binders that visible from almost every direction.

Maybe I'm feeling so strongly about this since 00 Raiser is my favorite MS. I might be biased against it for even the slightest reasons.

I saw some 3rd party MG Gerberas use white to break up the original's all-salmon body, I'll see if I can throw that in there somewhere.

In the meantime have a GP-03. The Dendrobium Pack will most likely be light grey with touches of dark grey and sand blue.

Also is there a way to separate front skirts on the older HGs where they're a single piece? I know for the newer HGs it's just cutting between the ball joints but you can't do that on a single connecting rod.

Any tips on how to paint the Eyes on my Delta Gundam?

Usually they're on raised surfaces, so its not too difficult to paint. However, the HGUC Delta Gundam's eye-area is just flat, so I'm going to need to freehand the eyes I think.

Any tips?
>>
>>13694536
the RG Wing Zero is by far the best iteration of the Wing Zero to date, so if you like the Gundam pick it up.
>>
>>13694744
Maybe you could cut out the eye shapes from the silvery part of the sticker sheet provided, then stick them onto the part pre-painted in the color of the border (e.g. black)

A clear piece goes over eyes so the sticker won't be going anywhere.

Can the HG Graze Kai take Build Custom parts? Also, is it just my imagination or does the series of "eyes" on the Hyakuri come unpainted and without stickers?

Very new to gunpla, but i just got the V2AB and I saw that there were 3 different configurations you can build - the V2 Assault, V2 Buster, and V2 Assault Buster. I had no idea there were could be variations in one kit, I just assumed it was just the AB.
So are there other kits that give you a variation of things to build in one package? After going through some other gunpla earlier today I found that the PG GP01Fb also allows you to build either just the GP01 or the GP01Fb, which I think is really neat

hey guys
so a month ago, I bought my first gunpla, and while I enjoyed building it, I was disappointed with A:how small it was I was expecting it to be a project, but I finished in an afternoon, and B: how small it was I was expecting it to be at least a foot tall, while it's not even close.

I'm still pretty new to gunpla, but do you guys have any recommendations for a gunpla for me?

The MG Double Bullet I impulse-bought when a local shop was trying to get rid of weak-selling AGE kits two years ago. Still haven't built them, been busy with other stuff.

I managed to snag:
MG AGE-1 Normal - $24
MG AGE-2 Double Bullet - $20
All HG AGE-3s - $8 each
HG AGE-FX Burst - $11

If you want something long-term, then don't get a High Grade, graduate to MG or even PG.

Alternatively, learn to paint and watch your projects stall in eternity forever.
>>
>>13695733
Damn that's good
>>
>>13695726
That's a high grade. You want a master grade or perfect grade.
>>
>>13695726
If you want a longer and bigger project, just get a MG.
>>
>>13695726
That's probably because you bought an HG, which is 1/144 scale. consider reading the guide before you make more purchase. MG and PG are the bigger ones fyi.

This is going to sound silly, but partly it's because at that time I decided to start taking gunpla seriously.
Now that I know how to paint, mod joints and such, I can't help but feel like a straight build of anything would be a waste, even though that's their most basic purpose.

Maybe I should add, the problem isn't the build processes themselves, it's coming up with what customization for what kit that's my problem. Creativity isn't my strong point.
>>
>>13695786
It's not about the details, they were aiming for a cleaner looks while keeping some details with the panel lines, the revive series also have much better articulation and part separations, i don't think you have to fix any seamlines on any of them. While with the G30 you have that classic giant ass seamline on the forearms there.

As a matter of fact I did. I was referring to the part where it says if you're undecided try getting the 00 Gundam since it's a a fairly standard modern HG that's flexible as fuck. I just glanced over the part of the guide recommending what kit you should start with since that hasn't applied to me for several years now.

Also Dalong's review of the Qant shows how big it is. You've seen how big a cigarette box is before, haven't you?

Should I get a badger over the Iwata eclipse?

Im looking at http://www.amazon.com/Badger-Air-Brush-2020-2F-Gravity-Airbrush/dp/B000BROVIO

My second question would be if I should grab http://www.amazon.com/Senco-PC1010-1-Horsepower-1-Gallon-Compressor/dp/B0000AQK78/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1451678189&sr=8-1&keywords=senco+air+compressor

I read on a blog this would be better then a hobby air compressor since you would have a consent air flow.

If so would hose would I need to make it work with the badger or iwata.

I do plan to use these airbrush to do the base coat and finer details.

I googled around for 4 months since my last post before finally deciding to buy and get into gunpla building.

Honestly I think a topcoat is enough to make RGs look good. They're engineered with enough color separation and the nub marks are fairly easy to hide.
>>
I want to build an MG Sinanju, which is the better build though, the ova version or the ver ka?
>>
>>13696977
Do you see pictures of the kit around the RG box ?

They are only flat coated kit with decals, not painted at all.
>>
Is a PM2.5 mask with safety goggles sufficient protection for spraying indoors? I'm just going to be spraying some primer before I hand paint and a coat of semi gloss before details and then a top coat to seal it all off. All the spraying will done with rattlecans and the actual hand painting with acrylics.

Probably in the bathroom with the window open and old newspapers laid around to catch excess spray. I really have no outdoor space I can utilize nor an exhaust fan anywhere indoors.
>>
Anyone built the RG Exia R3 conversion kit? How is it?
>>
>>13697066
They are the same kit, though the OVA ver comes with rocket bazooka, less decals, repairs the waist peg that often break in ver Ka, and the inner frame is made from PS instead of ABS.

Just go with OVA ver.

I have all eight S1s and S2s, and the 1/100 Overflag, and I must say I'm disappointed in the Dynames the most.
The connection between the shoulder piece and upper arm is loose OOB. Nothing that can't be fixed, of course, but when even Virtue has no problems holding up its huge bazooka, it's sad how just Dynames' shoulder shields can make the shoulders flop.
I've had 2 friends comment the same thing, so there.

No other complaints, though. A few paint applications needed, here and there. Par for NG 1/100.
Wish I could find a 1/100 Tieren, though.

So how would you recommend I go about spraying then? I don't want to do it outside because I fear the cold might affect primer adhesion. I really only have a laundry room with windows and a bathroom, if not that I'd have to find somewhere outside.

How I went about it (only applicable if you already have MG Sinanju Stein):
Buy the ver. Ka, but use the leftover base Sinanju torso parts from the Stein.

They're molded in PS for the Stein, ABS for the ver. Ka.
That way, you get the durable PS torso, and awesome sturdy ABS for everything else. Seriously, the ver. Ka's frame is the stiffest piece of gunpla I've ever built. It'll hold basically any pose.

You'll miss out on the bazooka, though.

I would agree the Revive. It styles after the original anime (as in, no panel lines like the G30th version) but keeps some of the modern "realistic" proportions. Has modern engineering and articulation to boot too.

If you want a realistic looking RX78 in 1/144th scale, go for the RG.

I was tempted, but after the shoddy plastic finish on the Xi I've been put right off mechanicore kits.
Plus the debacle of them releasing the "exclusive" hex camo as a decal sheet left a bitter taste in my mouth.
Got lots of resin conversions planned this year though.

yes, I rarely do a full paintjob on the kits I buy

I suppose you get asked this often, but how's the part fit on the DM Strike?
They have superior detail to MG ver. RM, but are they newbie-friendly? Or will I need to tighten some pegs here and there?

Overall, it is almost like working on a Bandai model kit, save for the following:
- The plastic is slightly softer, making nub removal a breeze.
- To make the above even bettern, all the armor is undergated (!).
- However, there are some fit issues, in which the parts kinda refuse to attach properly. In my case this happened in the cheeks and the rear skirt armor. The same happened with the hip joints, for these, I suggets you to be very careful, as they required a lot of pressure to properly fit and I was afraid of breaking them accidentally.
- The hands SUCK, badly. The fingers will break by looking at them. Be extremely careful. They are so fragile they have trouble closing around the handles of the weapons. The fact I was able to pull of the pose of the cover of the box was a fucking miracle, since the sword is as tall as the kit and pretty heavy.
- As for details, it is almost like the PG on that aspect.
Besides the complains, the DM Strike is a great kit that will look great once complete. I would suggest you to also apply all the decals, they are a fuckton, but once complete, you will be proud of it

What do you use to panel line with? I've been trying Gundam markers and Copic pens, but these look really nice and clean.
>>
>>13698049
It's got too much panel detail for my liking which wasn't from the show i grew to love it from.
I guess i'm just not as much of a fan for modern tastes i.e thinner, taller, mechs with more panelling molded in.

I do 3 steps:
- First, I use a fine tip black gundam marker.
- Second, above the lining I did with the marker, I panel line again using a mechanical pencil
- Last, I wipe off any excess with a bit of alcohol

The above is because on the first kits I worked on, when I topcoated them, sometimes, the panel lines I made with the marker kinda "bleed", resulting in a very messy look very hard to work around.
The mechanical pencil prevents the above from happening. For example, the lines in the skirt and thighs in this Gundam X came out very clean. Had I used only the gundam marker, I'm sure the topcoat would have ruined them

i'm by no means a good builder, but i have some experience and just finished my blitz today actually.

1. the purple torso section doesn't snap into anything and floats there until it gets sandwiched by black pieces on both sides. you can hold it in place with a finger, but rrobbert184 used tape

2. the red exterior sections of the shoulder don't have a solid connection. you really have to jjjjam it in.

3. the red vents throughout the kits have very low tolerances for nubs. take care to slice everything precisely so that you have a snug fit

shouldn't give you too much trouble.

Having said that, Derringer has said that feddie models aside from Gundams generally don't sell as well as Zeon models.

I get what you were doing with this project and the finish looks very nice

Im jealous as
I would love to get into airbrushing, but due to my position in an apartment, I would have to wait a few years. Handpainting it is, unless spraycans can do the trick outside.

Overall the paint doesn't look bad, but the grey on the inside of the visor kind of throws it off.

Get a modelling spray booth with an organic filter, fan, and conduit to eject lacquer and enamel paint fumes out the window. Acrylics don't have fumes so that shouldn't be a problem.

Unless your problem is the noise, in which case you'd use a hobby air compressor which is like 60db at most, and probably less noisy than some refrigerators or dehumidifiers.

How would you guys do a Powered Graze?
>>
>>13699951
Bulk it up a bit, bigger thrusters, more thrusters, bigger reactor and most importantly it needs to be orange.

Basically it will mass more and the thrusters and bigger reactor will compensate for the mass and then some.

removing the heels

But how would you bulk it up since it's so...awkward?
>>
>>13699951
i read that as powdered
>>
>>13700014
Nah, a Powdered Graze would be easy.
>>
>>13700024
So...that actually happens, huh? Honestly did not think it was possible.
>>
>>13700013
Might be as simple as plaplate on top of the armor from the base kit with a bolted-on look, take some inspiration from the Graze custom and Kai.

Basically you want it a bit thicker looking.

They simply don't have technology advanced enough for such a complex design

Their mint-green dye is at dangerously depleted levels. They simply cannot use any more.
