Eve of New Years Eve Edition

***READ THE GUIDE***

***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Our next Group Build!

Field Repair

Basically what this means is that rather than the mobile suit being fresh out of a factory, it's quite the opposite. Whether it's trudging through dense jungles or dodging debris in asteroid belts, your mobile suit has seen some better days.
You've been out in the field for quite a long time now, nearly half a year of active duty in the front lines and your personal mobile suit's pretty banged up. What's worse is the fact that there isn't a maintenance bay within several thousand kilometers of your local area that's capable of making any major repairs. Your unit's engineering crew has resorted to patch work and jury-rigging to keep your machine operational. Stray fire might have crippled its legs and arms or otherwise dealt considerable damage to a mobile suit's systems meanwhile some units have simply lost bits of armor and panels to the elements and have been forced to patch weld metal sheets over the exposed inner workings.
In any case it's beaten to hell but somehow you and your team have somehow kept it chugging along and now command's ordered all units operating in your theatre to fall back to form a defensive line against the enemy offensive.

It'll be nice to see some well done battle damage as opposed to the muddy smears and random X shapes most people slap on their kits. Looking forward to the results!

Nah, it'll be fine. Just chuck your kits down the stairs and throw them in some dirt for instant results.

Any of you ever acquire the System Weapon 00X sets to go with 1/144 RGs? If so, any opinions? I Know they're pre-assembeled, but how is build quality etc.

I'm asking because I'm looking to purchase pic related, System Weapon 008 for my RG Zeta for the Hyper Mega Launcher.

The launcher is huge and hard to balance. Vegeta had the solution of adding an Ex-S gundam inspired waist support arm to help hold it up.

And because the pre-assembled parts are assembled in cheap Taiwan/Vietnam factories they often have nubs and gouge marks on them.
>>
>>13686872
I have the gatling gun one, it has pre-assembeled nubs, so you have to clean that up on those parts. Other than that it's a pretty standard build.
You should expect to paint the hand the kit comes with because chances are the RG hand can't hold shit.

When panel lining a painted kit (i'm using enamel) do you need to be more careful about getting rid of the excess? Cause I tend to be a bit messy when lining and then clean it up
>>
>>13687085
They came out around the first OVA when that was all there was to its armament at the time and they wanted you to buy both of them to get both weapons.

Iirc the gattlings were later released as a magazine bonus after appearing in the OVA and then later as a system weapon set to make them more common.
>>
>>13687111

yes, you will spend a ton of time trying to clean up a messy wash if you do it wrong, and you are spending more time putting solvents on your clear coat which can be bad, try to be as neat as possible while doing washes with enamels
>>
>>13687113
Which System set has the Gattlings?
>>
>>13687117
Would it be a good idea to try and get a very fine brush set then?
>>
>>13687122
Literally the first set they made. Also came with a zaku machinegun.

Unfortunately if you want the double gattling you need to buy two sets and while they can peg into Unicorns forearms you can't put the shield on top because they are takeing up the slots.
>>
>>13687096
I wish you hadn't
>>
>>13687139
Ah, that sucks. I liked the Gatling Gun on Shield look.
>>
>>13687125

That's a good thing to have in general, but you still need a brush that can hold a bit of thenkixture, its more about being careful running the lines than the brush size, the mixture runs down the panel line itself because of the gloss

Honestly its just a practice thing, but try to be as neat as you can because it can be tempting to just slather it on and then clean it up but that takes dar longer and can lead to problems

Is the RG Zeta the best iteration of the Zeta Gundam atm? I'm looking to pick up a Zeta Gundam model, so looking for opinions.

How does the build/construction/detail compare to the HG, MG, or even PG?
>>
>>13687329
The MG 2.0 is a better call, the RG is extremely fragile due to the transformation.
>>
>>13687329
I'd say the MG 2.0, but that's the only one I've built, but I believe the consensus here is you transform the RG "once". the 1/144 ones are more fragile due to the transformation.

Considering that it already has a 1/100 ng and a "Hi resolution" 1/100 on the way that seems like it will be the high end version, I don't see an mg on the way for a long time.
>>
>>13687440
>"Hi resolution" 1/100
Is that it in the picture? I was expecting the gold to be a more dull machined gold. And have they completely changed the insignia's on the knees?

Something seems off about it compared to the anime model, love the detail level though.
>>
>>13687453
It seems like they are going the Seed metal build route and altering certain details and proportions to make a more stylized version. It is also going to have some diecast parts and will most likely be a titanium finish going by the promotional pictures.
>>
>>13687464
>Seed metal build route
Meh, I would've preferred closer to the anime model. What they've produced looks positively anorexic. I liked how the HG still had a bit of a bulky feel about the waist despite the slender midriff. I'm a sucker for posable fingers though, so I might get this (looks like it has them to me).

Also maybe it's just the angle but the vfin and the white bit on top of the head look rubbish compared to the HG.

1 for 1/100 Gundam & 1/72 Macross

3 1/144 I guess?

Why can't they just release the AB1-variant from the Wing Fenice? Looks like a good first step, and I want an adapter for the Zeta 2.0 so I don't need that fuck-huge base anymore.

So I'm going to be painting my RG Zaku with spray cans. I like that there are subtle shades of the same basic color.
Instead of buying 3 different primers, or three different green color cans, can I just prime it, then spray the pieces different shades of grey, then spray green on top of it? I already have a few different shades of grey from previous projects.

How many layers is too much for the pannel lines? This is my first time painting a 1/144 and the lines seem thinner and shallower.

If you ever happen to want to test out how things look without permanently welding them on, blutack (poster tack) is quite ideal. Pretty strong grip and it can even be used for some masking when you paint.

Which is funny since when they started becoming a regular general around ~2 years ago at the start of BF it was to supposedly get away from the elitism of /toy/ and be more welcoming to beginners as many of the posters were just getting into gunpla because of bf.
>>
>>13691380
/toy/ are just tryhards. But at least they are not mean. When they say something, they try to teach you at least. /m/ just says something and never teach
>>
>>13691399
At the time, elitism and shitposting were at an all time high on /toy/ thanks to a large influx of new people. After these generals became a thing a lot of the elitism died off and the shitposters moved here. Except for the FSS-baiter. He stuck around all spring and derailed whole threads because the FSS anon couldn't ignore him and kept responding.
>>
>>13691380
We had Gunpla generals for years before BF. but i do agree that the shitposting has risen
>>
>>13691450
There was a random gunpla thread every week or two that took days to max out and then would disappear for a week or two before a new one was made. Around BFs airing the gunpla threads became a more regular general, the OP format became established, and the threads began moving much faster.
>>
Hey /m/, for Christmas one of my relatives accidentally got me a duplicate rg destiny, and since it's from Japan it can't be returned. Because of this, I would like to kitbash it. Could I have recommendations for which kits I should use and how?

First I think it is unlikely you can kit bash mainly because you are dealing with a RG, ie a given frame. I dont think you can remove the arms and legs. Also the frames arent interchangeable with other RGs

So you are left with 2 choices with making a custom.

1) first you can just repaint the thing
2)Work on the external plastic

this would likely require you to have some putty or pla-cards and stick them on the plastic.

for example you might want to add a ring like thing on it, then you have to cut semi ring and slap them convincing on each shoulders or back of the kit

it is 3am here so I might not make sense

Guys question, since I got sick with wet sanding while wearing a medical mask I think I should lay off the heavy duty sanding, how should I sand down nubs that have been cut with an exacto knife? Do the same principles apply (ie. sand in circles if it's a curved surface, sand in one direction if it's a flat surface) or not?
I also tend to use 1k grit for my regular sanding job.
>>
>>13691941

how did you get sick wet sanding, did you drink the water?
>>
>>13691941
The purpose of wet sanding is that the water will keep all the plastic powder from floating in the air and being inhaled.

I don't see how you could get sick from that, unless you have some rare plastic allergy.

>>13693310

>gunpla isn't complex

Lots of MGs have stuff like pistons and interlocking mechanisms with slidey-shifty parts, especially ones with transforming frames, that you have to make sure line up and snap together and whatnot. They have a level of extra stuff that can't be ignored unless you want shit to break or jam.

Even if you're just sticking on shit together, an MG has a lot more plastic to stick together, and the more gimmicks an MG has means more shit that has to line up or else that Zaku's not going to have that fancy turn-the-head-and-the-eye-turns-too thing going on.

but yeah, gunpla is still a ton more straightforward than traditional plamo.
>>
>>13693341
Clear coat goes on after the paint to protect it from scratching and strengthen decal's adhesiveness. You put primer on first to get the paint to stick and to get a flat color so that your paints end up being the same shade on different colored parts.
