Like how the mini-series was partially a live-action adaptation of the TV series (same scenes, different characters/context), the movie is also a partial live-action adaptation of the Patlabor 2 movie. When I saw this scene going through the waterways under the bridge network, I immediately recall the exact same scene from the animated movie. It's pretty neat to see how well the animated scenes translate into 3D.

It seems that they manage to enlist the help of the JSDF. The super-imposed shots were okay but the budget CGI still looks kinda jarring.

And, like the animated movie, there isn't much labor action in this one either. Though the final showdown was quite tense and superbly done.

So how was it overall? Audiences didn't exactly take to it but that isn't a great metric of quality.

Every time I tell someone that Mamoru Oshii's movies are good because there's a lot of scenery porn, someone will tell me that watching people doing intense talking for 70% of the movie is boring as fuck.

So I just say that Oshii's films are very Mamoru-Oshii these days.

Do they really explain who Haibara Rei is in the director's cut? Wasn't that part left hanging in the novel too?
