What's the point in making the Death Star bigger than it already is? It already destroys planets. There is just no reason.
>>
>>13662936
It's a metaphor for the franchise.
>>
>>13662936
Now it can destroy several planets at once, instead of only one at a time, duh.
>>
Because now it can destroy half a dozen planets in one shot without having to park itself near them.

How did the new death star get built without anyone noticing and in such short time?
>>
>>13662947
Why would you want to do that?
>>
Because they didn't build a fucking space station, they just built a cannon on some planet

Because the Death Stars had to be parked next to a fucking planet to blow it (and only it) up while Starkiller blows up entire fucking star systems from across the fucking galaxy

You brainless cocksucking retard

Him boarding it and leaking the news was all to bait the rebels into a trap. He had foreseen it all, he explicitly told so in the movie.

>>
>>13663006
Eh, there are tons of planets. What's a few less? I'm sure their inhabitants didn't matter anyways.
>>
So, did they originally build the thing in a system with two suns? We don't have reason to believe it moved, but they charged it twice and after the first time it still had a sun near it.

Also, since the position of the sun was moved, that means everything in that solar system's going to be destabilized and probably end up falling into the sun at some point, yes?
>>
>>13663015
No. It doesn't consume the whole thing in one shot, what are you talking about?
>>
>>13663010
The World Devastators are about as top-tier as superweapons get, since they not only eat planets but process the raw material into fleets.

For raw power and rough function Starkiller's about on par with the Galaxy Gun. Most bullshit superweapon is still the Sun Crusher.
>>
>>13663010
Starkiller Base is like the bastard child of the Death Star and the Star Forge. I'd say the Star Forge is arguably a better super weapon than Starkiller Base because it produces entire fleets of ships out of stellar material rather than just blows up planets.

There's also the Dark Reaper which is basically a giant saucer that harvests life energy from everything around it. That's really a different kind of weapon though, and arguably low-tier.

>>13663028
Not only that but the World Devastators "grow" as well and can get to be absolutely massive. I think without a doubt they're the most effective.
>>

Previous death star required detailed plans to find its weakness. This one took a TRAITOR janitor to point out its weakness, kinda cheapens the efforts of the previous movies.

God TFA had so many plot holes
>>
>>13663296
That's not even a plot hole. I would accept 'Plot Contrivance' but not a plot hole, you shitlord.
>>
It's not a death star, just a regular planet modified into a deathstar.
>>
>>13663296
>took a TRAITOR janitor to point out its weakness
being a janitor is a bonus, if anyone can tell you a layout of a building it's the janitors and it doesn't look like the base has security clearances for different personnel levels
>>
>>13663187
Honestly this was one of the things about the "Resistance" that surprises me the most. Half the point of Star Wars is to sell toys to children and man-children. They could have easily added in updated Y-Wings, A-wings and possibly even B-wings without much in the way of people complaining. Including the other fighters would have allowed for at least a dozen more toys.
>>
>>13663954
>They could have easily added in updated Y-Wings, A-wings and possibly even B-wings without much in the way of people complaining
gotta save up for the next round, they've got plenty of toys and other collectibles to go around as it is, doesn't mean much but lego's TFA line got stuff that's not even in the movie
>>
>>13663115
>>13663028
Starkiller Base also has some heritage from Centerpoint Station in that it can deliver strikes through hyperspace instead of needing to travel to within visual distance of the target.
>>
>>13663954
The resistance is pretty small at this point. They sent what they called their entire fleet and it was less than ten X-Wings.

I'm sure we'll get more than enough later.

The Star Killer heat oscillator seemed a bit lightly defended, but considering the only way in was to sabotage the shields which you could only reach via an insane plan, fair enough I guess.

>>
>>13662936
The entire planet isn't a construct.

The hollowed out a planet, and installed the parts they needed to weaponize it.

It probably cost less to build than the original two death stars.
>>
>>13664036

Subtle nothing he jizzed in his Imperial Pants.
>>
>>13662951

The first Death Star was destroyed because by the time it chugga chuggaed over to the planet, and then orbited it until the moon was in firing range, the rebel fighters destroyed it.

Here they can just blow away planets from safely inside their territory. The only reason the Resistance could counter is because Han is crazy and lightspeeded until he was practically crashing to get past the shield and the detection net and took out the shield which wasn't on an exposed moon outside the shield.

Really the new super weapon is kind of clever in how they covered all their bases for the stuff that destroyed the first two Death Stars.
>>
>>13664372
>The first Death Star was destroyed because by the time it chugga chuggaed over to the planet, and then orbited it until the moon was in firing range, the rebel fighters destroyed it

Anyone could have pointed out the structure on the holomap, it was literally right there on the surface.

Oh you'd be surprised how fucking backwards it is in Star Wars.

You can trace the production patterns of Star Destroyers relatively easily. Strip mining a planet and then fitting planetkiller tech into the hollowed out shell? Who would see that coming?

Somehow no one is ever made aware of new developments in planetkillers without a leak.

From what I understand, the First Order is like Iran. They do nothing except conquer planets to milk them for tax money to build superweapons.

The New Republic controls like 1/2 or 1/3rd of the galaxy and they can't fight the First Order head on without starting a war on the scale of the Clone Wars, which their "war-weary" politicians are afraid of starting because they want to keep getting elected. So they buy off the First Order with credits and supplies of materiel while sponsoring the Resistance.

They already knew it's weakness. They say outright "A weapon this big needs whatchamacallin regulator thingy b or else it'll blow up" and Finn says that thing is where it was and pointed it out on the map.

Finn had no idea that thing was a vulnerablity and the Resistance had no idea where in the structure it was so they kind of pooled their info and worked out a plan.

The Galaxy Gun's a big gun that fires projectiles which move through hyperspace to hit their targets, letting it strike from anywhere in the galaxy. The projectiles can be tuned to settings from "just wipe out that military base" to "blow up the whole planet".

World Devastators are big tractor beam-equipped mobile factories that eat the raw material of a planet and process it into ships, droids, equipment, and upgrades for itself.

The Sun Crusher is a ship about the size of a TIE Fighter that carries special torpedoes that cause stars to go supernova. It's also made out of a material that makes it so fucking invincible that you can shoot it with a Death Star's superlaser and it's pretty much unharmed.
>>
>>13665125
Galaxy Gun was a missile launcher in orbit around one planet that shot planet killing missiles through hyperspace.

Sun Crusher was a retarded invincible bomber that fired torpedoes that caused stars to go supernova.

I think my main issue with the movie is that we don't really learn how big this First Order is. I mean all we saw of them was a single planet, which was blown up, and a single star destroyer.

In the original movies we knew the empire was galaxy wide. If it wasn't for Holo-Voldermort with a Nose there'd be nothing implying the First Order had more territory. This Resistance is backed by the New Republic and they only had like 10 X-Wings. If that's all your sending to fight you must not be fighting someone that big.

And fuck that Voldermort looking mother fucker. We didn't even get a glimpse of the Emerpor in the original movies until Empire and that was very brief and you couldn't see much of him. Palpatine or Sheev or whatever his name is had good build up.
>>
>>13665085
Its implied that Stormtroopers were indoctrinated not to feel any empathy or attachment to fellow comrades. Therefore Finn has litttle or no attachment other than the storm-trooper that stained his helmet.

You must not have seen the movie.

Not saying /pol/ isn't delusional, but JJ specifically wanted to help make the next star wars movie just so he could add a more diverse cast.
It's even in the scripts apparently.
>Davis’ second step to creating more diversity is just as important as the first: “When describing a crowd scene, write in the script, ‘A crowd gathers, which is half female.’” This may seem obvious, but in a world where women make up half of the population, only 17 percent of the characters in crowd scenes in movies (both live-action and animated) are women.

And that's why the New Republic didn't pay much attention to the First Order.

Yes. I've been looking for a webm of Poe's rampage. This is where it really feels like we're watching Star Wars in the year 2015. No more shots of the cockpit followed by a cut to two laser blasts followed by a cut to an explosion. Instead, we get to see the ships zip around and move like we've always imagined. Like an actual dogfight.

Also loved how it was framed from Finn's perspective in one tracking shot, like you're marveling at the blue angels during an air show or something, but it's a battle.

This movie really was a step up for JJ.
>>
>>13667807

Someone pointed this out that I didn't notice but most of the dogfight spaceship scenes took place within the atmosphere of a planet (Rey and Finn outrunning two TIE fighters on Jakku, and The X-Wing squad's two runs against TIEs and the Starkiller Base)

Like that other guy said, it isn't so much a plot hole as a plot contrivance. You'd think The First Order would have more thorough security measures and keep crucial information firewalled above a certain rank.

Still, it's not something that should ruin the movie for you, unless you're a nitpicky shitposting little bitch from /tv/.
>>
>>13667572

The Starkiller attack hit the Republic capital and it's main fleet, essentially mortally wounding NR. They probably wont be able to put up much of a fight (compared to First Order, who technically only lost one base) any time soon.
>>
>>13667968
>Like that other guy said, it isn't so much a plot hole as a plot contrivance. You'd think The First Order would have more thorough security measures and keep crucial information firewalled above a certain rank.
This is easy to explain. The First Order, like The Resistance, are a shadow of their former selves and don't have the means to run as tight a ship as they used to. Both sides are basically a tiny fraction in size as their counterparts in the original films.
>>
>>13665154
That doesn't really sound very smart. A good esprit de corps tends to make for a more effective army. Hell, in universe, it's probably one of the reasons why Clonetroopers were better than their Stormtrooper successors.
>>
>>13667807
Still, he's mostly flying in a long gentle curve happening to coincide with getting behind all those TIEs, with only a single barrel roll to shake things up. Maybe I've been spoiled by anime or my own imagined visualization of dogfights in the X-wing books but I'd hope for some more complex stunts against multiple fighters and even missiles in future movies.

Has anyone made one of these for The Force Awakens?
>>
>>13670022
We really needed a short scene that explains the post-ROTJ political situation more. Like one where Leia's aide (that black woman who's shown prominently before Hosnian Prime gets destroyed) discussing shit with the Senate. Maybe then we could finally explain why the Republic is fucking around with this Resistance rather than engaging the First Order directly, and maybe clarifying more about the FO (like how large the territory they control, if they are the only Imperial remnant group or if there is a larger Imperial Remnant rump state out there).

Also, am I the only one really annoyed that we lost both the New Republic and Luke's New Jedi Order essentially offscreen just so Disney and Abrams can completely rehash the OT? I fully expect the opening crawl of Episode VIII to tell us that the New Republic has completely collapsed so that it'll just be the Resistance versus the First Order throughout the rest of this trilogy.

Pretty straight forward in the original movies. I remember back when I was a kid going to the local game store 20 years ago and one of the owners blowing our minds that the Galactic Empire was technically the successor to the Old Republic.

I know we can go on how it was tiresome but at least the prequel trilogy went into details of the fall of the Old Republic.

You can stretch the opening crawl in The Force Awakens to include that the Resistance is tasked with finding Luke Skywalker and with investigating the actions of the First Order. It's very aggravating when you have to read supporting material like novels and the Visual Dictionary to shore up and make more sense of the movie.

You can dramatically improve the movie with a few more expository sentences or even a scene like mentioned here. >>13670203

I apologize for my sarcasm. The First Order overall appears to be mostly indoctrinated youths extolling the virtues of the Empire. 20-30 somethings make up the bulk of the cast even for command positions. It's not grey line (as in hair) like it was in the other movies calling the shots.

>>13671032
>I wish they didn't treat Finn like a gag character quite as often. He deserved a bit more dignity than that.

BB-8 and his annoying sidekick who won't stop talking

>The First Order overall appears to be mostly indoctrinated youths extolling the virtues of the Empire. 20-30 somethings make up the bulk of the cast even for command positions

So they're like Neo-Nazis or Neo Zeon?
>>
>>13671032
>When he said it in TFA, it was kind of a bullshit thing to say.

Giving it a bit more thought I think he just said that to try and appeal to the guy from the resistance. I mean he was raised since childhood to be a stormtrooper, social interaction, negotiating, etc isn't really something they teach them. Dude's probably pretty stunted mentally.
>>
>>13671054
What I've read is this.

“That all came out of conversations about what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again?’” Abrams said in the interview.

The Empire eventually capitulated and we end up with the Cold War scenario with the Rebels never really finishing off the Empire but giving them a chunk of the galaxy they can squabble over. The hardliners decide to head off to the unknown regions and resort to kidnapping and indoctrination to rebuild what they considered to be the "real" Empire.

>none of this is touched upon in the movie
>>
>>13671054
First order is basically Neo Zeon but much more competent.
>>
>>13671060
Sure, he's just a bad liar. Which is a decent trait for a developing hero to have.
>>
>>13671090

that was a joke. it was meant to be a joke.
>>
>>13671080
>more competant

uh...mega weapon development and mobile armor development are both ridiculous.

It came across as a joke, but it's the kind of thing they could build into a character defining motivation. As it stands, Finn is a weird, contradictory traumatized indoctrinated broken coward goofy friendly daring hero. A motivation like 'doing the right thing' would help to reconcile a lot of the inexplicable shit he does in the long run.
>>
>>13671181
The megaweapon was able to kill billions of people all at once though.
>>
Why did they take a janitor to raid a village?
>>
>>13671181
Neo Zeon wishes they had the firepower to destroy galaxies.
>>
>>13671255
His number came up. It's basically like bingo.
>>
>>13671257
Nothing in star wars does either. Unless there's some EU trash I don't know about.

They destroyed the primary targets they wanted to destroy with their mega weapon.
>>
>>13671064

Why is that a problem? I don't understand the need for series/properties to explain every minute detail of their histories and motives or the 'rules' of their universe. Why can't we just have some thing and be like, "This is a cool thing, don't worry about how it got there or why it works, or some other shit. Just relax and go with it."
>>
>>13671271
Sun Crusher, friendo.
>>
>>13664042

What is JJ's deal with having someone watch planets blow up.

Like, sure, the beam fractures and hits multiple targets. But to the targets have to be in the same system? And maybe a few hundred thousand miles apart? Does Han need to be able to see it from the surface of a planet? Does taking out five planets really neutralize the entire Republic?

Same shit as Vulcan getting flattened in 2009 Trek. Nigger invented a new planetoid in the Vulcan system, just so Spock could stand on it.
>>
>>13662936
It can kill planets from the other side of the galaxy.
>>
>>13671299
The other anon said galaxies, not solar systems. Big difference there.
>>
>>13671322
Shit, you're right. My bad.
>>
>>13671301

It's getting a bit ridiculous, yes. Closest thing I have to a problem with Star Wars. It's a hell of a pretty visual as long as you don't try to think anything about it in terms of physics/time/space/anything at all. I could deal with it in ST as a one-time thing but I did kinda have a "are you fucking kidding me" moment for SW.

Nothing beats the Enterprise falling into Earth's atmosphere from Lunar orbit, though.
>>
>>13671322
Galaxies are made of stars.
By destroying its stars you can destroy a galaxy.
>>
>>13671032
Didn't he just say "It's the right thing to do" as a cover-up for wanting to get the hell away from the First Order? Poe even joked about he was a bad liar, but befriended him anyway.

Still, Finn was a coward but he obviously cared for his comrades (Rey) which is why he begged her to come with him and just avoid the conflict entirely. In the end, he didn't take the fight to the First Order because it was the right thing to do, but because Rey was in trouble, which was kind of endearing.

Maybe the whole "do the right thing" vs "keep your loved ones safe" could have been conflict for him instead, or in a later movie. I don't know, things are pretty muddled right now, and I definitely feel like both Rey and Finn could have used some stronger, more defining character moments. Not a lot of point-A to point-B development.
>>
>>13671411
Sun Crusher vs Galaxy
Sun crusher: 1 Ship with 11 Torpedoes each capable of blowing up a single Solar system
Galaxy: ~300 Billion Stars

Do you see any problems here?
>>
>>13671382
Apparently Starkiller created a "tear through hyperspace" or some shit that made the beams and the destruction visible. Like an afterimage that projected trans-dimensionally through space.

It's total bullshit but it's just silly enough an explanation for me to be okay with it. Bonus points if it's a permanent tear in hyperspace that is just there and fucks up anyone trying to go to light speed nearby.
>>
>>13671522
What's important is that he knew it was the right thing to do even though he just needed a pilot. It reveals his moral center, it isn't just a throwaway lie.
>>
>>13671286
It matters when you can't tell who is fighting who or what the stakes are. There was one throwaway line about the republic navy not being able to help the resistance; is the resistance not the navy? Was the entire navy in drydock on the planets that got blown up? Is the entire republic gone now or are they just reeling a little? Was that coruscant or not?

ANH didn't explain anything either, but the scale was also just a lot smaller and the lines were much clearer. Yavin had ALL the rebels. The Senate was dissolved. If the Death Star blew up the base, the rebellion was over.

They ignored a little too much of the world in TFA.
>>
>>13672545
>Like an afterimage that projected trans-dimensionally through space

It's times like this I really do miss the EU.
>>
>>13672635

Yeah but it also suggests he wouldn't have dared breaking Poe out if he couldn't use him to escape and he'd have left him to his fate and waited for another chance to leave otherwise.

Finn is moral but he's also a massive coward early on.
>>
>>13671002

Actual underage actors are hard to work with in terms of legality.

But none of them are supposed to be teenagers anyway.

Well Rey only barely as she's supposed to be 19 and is played by a 22 year old who was 20-21 when filming it.

Finn is supposed to be mid 20s, and Hux and Kylo were early 30s an all are played by actors of around the same age.
>>
>>13672660
>is the resistance not the navy?

per the opening crawl:
>With the support of the REPUBLIC,
General Leia Organa leads a brave RESISTANCE.

won't even read something you don't have to even if it's in giant letters on a movie screen, huh?
>>
>>13672768
I won't even pay attention to 4chan posts as I scroll down a page. Moving words are pretty gay.

For real though are the Resistance just the SW version of the Maquis in Trek?
>>
>>13672757

It always blows my mind every time I do wind up seeing actual teens play teens. Like, Heroes Reborn? Blows my mind that most of the kids are actually kids this time around.
>>
>>13672792
>SW version of the Maquis in Trek?
>>13672768 just said "With the support of the REPUBLIC,"
no they're more like the Mujahideen
>>
>>13664068
The inside of the base gave me real Takahashi vibes. Man loves his Star Wars style bases.
>>
>>13672768
My problem is *why* is the resistance different from the republic. Having some kind of under the table government funded military force to oppose the first order rather than fielding their own navy against them doesn't make any sense without an explanation.
>>
>reading Before the awakening novel
>Fin is considered to be the best stormtrooper
this is hilarious.

also where can I get scans of the TFA visual dictionary? I can't seem to find it anywhere

Anon I got it from based grandparents recently. When I get a chance I'll scan them for you, but I can't promise much.

...we are talking about the same guy, right?
>>
So why did no one tell Kylo that Vader turned to the light side in the end?
>>
>>13676651
Only Luke (and the other Newtype ghosts) knew about Vader's change of heart, and Kylo could probably do some mental gymnastics to avoid understanding that.
>>
>>13676796
Luke trained Kylo. He's seriously not going to tell his nephew about his grandfather?
>>
>>13676800
It was kind of a sore subject. Would you talk about your space Goebbels dad?
>>
>>13676806
I would if it would keep my nephew from going down the dark side.
>>
>>13676807
Good point.
>>
>>13676651

It's stated that he knows, but he's decided (or more likely has been led to believe) Vader was the real person and Anakin was the fuck-up, not the other way around. Still not really sure where Ren's character is going; The novel (and Adam Driver's acting) would indicate that his character has a lot of inner conflict but Abrams said he was supposed to be cut-and-dried evil by the time of TFA.
>>
>>13676819
>Abrams said he was supposed to be cut-and-dried evil by the time of TFA.
Abrams is a fucking idiot who barely understood the Kobayashi Maru.
>>
>>13672768

Because seeing the events or even the details of the conflict being setup would've been more entertaining to watch then whatever fan-wanking retread of Episode IV that we got.
