Super Robot Wars's version of Manga Shin they use in a few games was one of the early designs from Getter Robo Go, which had no Get Machines at all. In most of those games it couldn't even Open Get (though I know AP had it doing that in some animations).

Of course, the design they finally settled down on by the time of the Shin Getter manga had Get Machines, but for a while it didn't. And hell, we know by Go it's capable of half transforming into 2 without ever changing from 1, so maybe it just evolved that while it was sitting unused in a basement.
