Going by the first season and the official timeline, Polaris was drawn to Earth once the Seto Inland Sea Mir was discovered in Japan.

The Seto Mir had been there for ages, but once it "woke up" it sterilized Japan and started that whole mess, believing it was helping us. Then once Polaris arrived it landed at the North Pole, and as we know was hostile, kicking off the war as it is now.

The Seto only became active from it's dormant state because people kept poking it.

I don't know if it'd be "easy", but Soushi and Kabuki have some ungodly strong willpower. AT-Fields are like a manifestation of willpower (right, sorta?), so I imagine they'd be able to channel their wills (as they have) through their mechs. Agaisnt Yuinit-01, they might have a bit more of a problem, but against an Angel (as the question is posed), I think they'd have about as much trouble as an Azazel type.

Narratively, it is pretty unfortunate yeah. We've got limited time so things have to happen fast.

Character-wise I think it works, we at least got that scene with the crystals, and some 10/10 line delivery by Shiraishi. Rina was clearly still a little out of it before the mission, and seems extra intent on winning.

The ass scene was maybe a little soon after that, thanks to the time crunch, but I loved it too much to really mind. Ultimately it was just a way for her to make Sui focus too, if she had winked at him or something it'd be a very different conversation.

But I also really like Sui and want him to succeed.
