So I read the two books available in translation.
It's...fun.
Basically it's a magical girls with guns series, featuring a catgirl maid and lots of explosions. They fight Blackbeard in the first issue.
The Catgirl's the magical pet that powers the MC by copying various packages of combat-related data to her system and the Magical Girl's power is that she's stupidly adaptive to digital inputs, which makes her capable of using those on the fly. The port they use is located in the catgirl's tummy, which is why she has to show her panties every time they get srs.

"Fucking pedos."
I was interested in this, they had it at the mall in the BAM, and I've liked Rikudo since my friend showed ne Excel Saga, and obviously i like Shirow, but i have no idea if it's any good
Apparently the concept was originally meant for another anime, sorta like Real Dive, so Shirow produced more "serious" designs and concept designs, none of which ended up being used though. Like this Blackbeard that basically looks like an Object.

Why the quotation marks
I had always heard that Shirow Masamune just made the concept and tech while Rikudo actually writes everything else.
Personally I thought the first two chapters were... well, they weren't completely terrible.
I'd be willing to give it more of a chance if I didn't have to waste money to read more it in English.

Because that's Blackbeard's catchphrase.
And Blackbeard's AI Avatar is a lion with a third leg, which is something they certainly would not have dropped in the Anime.
alternatively, that guy from kirby
The main problem right now's the usual one - whatever overaching plot they have in mind will only start in book three. Right now the main issue seems to be that cyberbrains are still an early tech and MC girl could serve as a blueprint on how to make it mass-market compatible. No idea if they're actually going anywhere with it.
Though depending on how much Shirow actually wrote for Rikudo, this one could just end up being an Excel Saga with little robot girls and huge robotic machines blowing shit up.

I forget, is it the anime of Excel Saga that everyone likes? Or the manga?

The anime is the one people know about, but every time it gets brought up, there's always lots of "the manga is superior" guys. Not sure if that means anything, though.

The manga's translations's kinda horrible though. They put all the jokes into the appendix.
