Just finished a video about Giant Gorg. Anyone want to talk about the series or any of Yas's other Non Gundam works? It made me really want to check out Crusher Joe & Venus wars. Are those any good, or was Gorg just a fluke?

Well anyway here's the video, please tell me what you think.

Crusher Joe is a great fun 80's space adventure film. It's not high art or anything, but it's great for what it is. You should deffinitly check it out.
Love the reviews btw
>>
Really good stuff. It's a great and underrated series.
>>
>>13632515
Venus Wars is pretty alright, if gay. Animation is impeccable of course.
>>
This was some great timing. Giant Gorg just went up for pre-order on discotek's store.

>>
Can I watch the OVAs & movie by themselves, or is this one of those series that has a manga you're expected to be familiar with before jumping into it?

Thanks for the kind words about the review too, I worked really hard on it compared to the other videos. Purely coincidental it went up at the same time as the discotek pre-orders too. Funny how life works out that way sometimes.

I really like your reviews. On point, good narration, no autism... They're great, keep making them.

Haven't seen Crusher Joe. Venus Wars is pretty cool, it's one of the most beautiful animus I've seen but also really boring.
>>
>>13635084

I'm glad people aren't tearing me apart about giving it a 9/10. Looking into popular opinion on some sites after I finished the review, some people really don't like this show for some reason. Mostly it was people saying the ending sucking, but I actually liked it looking back on it.

Originally I was confused why they didn't just escape the island on boats and planes like everyone else, but then I remembered the war that was declared by Mamon. With that in perspective, it makes sense that they chose the bombs over getting killed later in a gigantic robot war. It also gave us a lot of character development.

It could be that I just don't have enough perspective & haven't watched enough anime to compare it to, but I've also heard complaints ranging from it being boring, to the characters all being boring. I guess it's not for modern mecha fans.

Venus Wars, read the manga by Yas first

Crusher Joe is good. I didn't like Gorg very much though.
>>
>>13632515

Yas is really good, and he does nice designs, comics, movies and shows. But none of his films or shows were successful.

I haven't read many of his comics. Many are untranslated.

>Arion

Great film. Nice animation. It clearly looks like something that should be a trilogy but crammed into one 2 hour film. The gods are also really easy to kill.

>Venus Wars

Pure animation and mechanical pornography. Story and film itself are just okay.
>>
Is Gorg the most solid 80's tv show? I am thinking so. Short, not any filler, entertaining, tells a nice story.

Likewise, I thought Gorg was fantastic. The ending was weak, but not terrible, and there were some slow bits in the first half, but enough happens to keep viewers interest until the story really picks up in the middle.

You did a great job on your review OP, you basically said exactly what I feel about the show and added some useful background info to it. 10/10 work.

>Is Gorg the most solid 80's tv show?
I wouldn't really call it the "most solid" since it is still kinda rough around the edges on some parts, but I still think it's pretty decent
>>
Excellent review, as always. I've had Giant Gorg in the backlog for a little while so this might get me to dig into it. Having seen Venus Wars, I would definitely recommend it. Beautiful mechanical designs and some of the most fluid animation I've ever seen. The story is a little less fleshed-out, and the main villain is essentially a Gihren Zabi stand-in, but still a worthwhile watch.

>Mfw just got to episode with Manon in Giant Gorg
I mean, I can't say I didn't expect it but that got weird really quickly.
>>
>>13637555
>also, ancient aliens
I want this tweest in every show, if we're being completely honest.

>Is Gorg the most solid 80's tv show

Only in bizarro world would this mediocre fluff be considered as such.
>>
>>13637809

>mediocre fluff

Every once & awhile someone says this. It's obviously not perfect, but why do people keep hating stuff the show like this? I guess some people just can't appreciate adventure shows.
>>
>>13637809

A lot of shows have low budget animation, too many episodes, filler, and are kinda boring. Gorg is solidly animated, and is entertaining from beginning to end.
>>
>>13637910
Every single show needs at least one contrarian, apparently. Sometimes you just can't win.
>>
>>13637910

A show being average doesn't mean I hate it. Sorry I won't join the circlejerk with you guys.

>>13637925
>Gorg is solidly animated

Sure, that's its one noteworthy element.

>is entertaining from beginning to end.

I don't think so. Plot progression is spread out so thinly before the middle of the show - very little is of interest before then, the almost entirely one-dimensional cast surely isn't up to the task, the show tries to liven up the excitement by ending on cliff-hangers that imply impending death (it forgets that you have to establish actual tension and the possibility of death, it does this as early as episode one and never learns) or a revelation you guessed episodes ago due to how paint by the numbers the show is.

>>13637928
I have the oddest feeling I've seen this guy around elsewhere too.

>google search giant gorg
>one of the first results is the animeworld order podcast
>all that salt from them saying the show was boring

I think this might be one of those shows where the more anime you've seen, the worse your opinion is. One example they gave was that most of the cast wasn't developed & were "just there", but that's never something a show like this is going for. It's not character driven, it's theme, music, mood, & fight driven.

>votoms was a better show & came out around this same time
>why isn't this as good as votoms?

THEY'RE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SHOW

I mean god damn, that whole podcast pissed me off.
>>
>>13637555

That "fight" if you can eve call it that, against mamon was scary as hell for a show like this. That's another thing I like about Gorg, the robots in this series are scary as shit since they're basically aliens.

They're all really abstract too, so this was obviously not a show made to sell model kits, even if some were made after the fact years later.
>>
>>13638216
Eh, they're entitled to their opinions even if I disagree with them; like that one time they said that stuff like TV Ideon and Birth weren't good (then again, two of them admitted to liking Harmageddon, Metropolis (respectively) Dagger of Kamui of all fucking things, so again, eh). Anyways, while admittedly they were kinda spot on about most the the cast and the pacing and all, what really turned me off was the fact that they said that it was a "war anime"; even counting all the flaws the show has you can still tell it's far from being one. At best it's actually more of an action-adventure anime with SF elements.
>>
>>13638317
>Dagger of Kamui of all fucking things

Is that bad? I haven't seen it but didn't grumpy Jiisan give it at least a 4/5? I could swear he might have given it something even higher.
>>
>>13638317

There's no way Giant Gorg is a war anime. That's missing the point entirely.
>>
Seabook, is that you?
>>
>>13632750
I saw some pics of it and it looks pretty appealing, I'll check it out sometime too.
>>
>>13632515

well animated
>>
I'm halfway into the show and it's only getting slower and slower.
>>
>>13644387
Giant Gorg is pretty damn impressive at that.
>>
>>13638317
>Dagger of Kamui of all fucking things.

Wait, what? I can't see why you would try to toss Dagger of Kamui under the bus like that. If you didn't like it, that's cool, but there are so many rad things about it.

>>13638339
You know how westerns are based off of old samurai movies? Dagger of Kamui is an old samurai movie that is conscious of westerns. If you like adventure, tales of revenge, and are down for audio/visuals that get downright psychedelic, definitely check it out.
