Why would anyone argue over whether or not the summary movies are canon over the tv? They're just a summary of what happened in the tv, they don't override anything. You can argue about ANT, because they actually change scenes and add things. Anyone who argues over whether or not the compilation films or the tv series is canon deserves to be removed from the gene pool.

Depends on franchise. Front Mission requires that you've played all games and read every light novel and manga to understand 100% of its plot. There's also Resident Evil, with certain manga and its two CGI animated movies Degeneration and Damnation.

Just like how people keep telling you /m/ isn't a hivemind, the Japanese Gundam fanbase is also not a hivemind. They don't agree on everything, they don't care about things as strongly as others, they are just as nit-picky and laid-back as any handful of /m/en. They care as much about what's canon as much as I do, you do, and any random /m/ poster does. Which is to say, a lot, a little, and everywhere inbetween.

Not nearly as much as we do. Western cultures are so annoying about canon because it was originally about interpreting the Bible, there were literal wars over it, and it shaped attitudes about "what REALLY happened in this fictional story" for centuries.

Yeah, the people who prefer the movies are the ones who put an emphasis on the destination. They just care about the conclusion, not about the whole build up to it. They just want to have watched and digested the highlights, and to be able to say they watched it. Which is why you continually get posters here bitching about CCA and ZZ.

This. The reason the west is so big on canon was because a lot of western civilization is based around what their interpretation of holy script is. It's where we got the word canon from in the first place.
