I can't stand Roland Emmerich and his shitty movies. He readily admits they're nothing but cheap entertainment, but I still hate him nonetheless.

It's like he single-handedly defined the cheesy "Hollywood big-budget shitter" trope. Michael Bay is the only one who can compete with his schlock.

Enjoying the fruits of his labors I suppose. Dude must be pretty rich at this point: why not relax and enjoy that? Wikipedia says he's doing a few films, but one of them is an indie thing so he may just be getting picky about what he does (outside of things he can do with Jaden).
>>
>>13625735
I Am Legend is a fine movie, in an alternative dimension where the studio didn't go full retard and removed the while fucking point of the story and even the title at basically the last moment.
The CGI vampires were shit, though.
>>
>>13625742
I guess he just really loves his kid. I can understand the sentiment, but Jayden's never going to come into his own if he's under his old man's shadow all the time. I don't think the last Will-Jayden venture (I don't even remember what it was called) did so well.

>>13625735

Pursuit of Happiness I guess? I liked Hitch and Hancock too, but I can see people disliking them more. Even those are 7 or 8 years old at this point.

>>13625744

I'll never understand why you'd take a story like I Am Legend and have a humanity fuck yeah ending to it's movie. The entire point is defeated by doing so so why not just make another vampire movie instead? It's not like there's a shortage of vampire stuff to choose from.

>>13625747

I don't know much about Jaden and have only seen him in the newest Karate Kid adaptation, but I thought he was decent in that. I hear he's a complete tool on social media, but then, he's a teenager now so it's not like that's all that unexpected and he'll probably grow out of it and find that faintly embarrassing in a few years.

>>13625761
What makes it even dumber is that they actually filmed the real ending of I Am Legend, but apparently it didn't test well. So instead of realizing that they had somehow gotten the dumbest focus group in cinema history, the studio fucked over the whole movie instead. What makes even less sense is that nobody stopped them from doing that. You'd think that Will Smith would have enough clout in Hollywood to tell them to don't go pants on head retarded if he actually had tried.
>>
>>13624915
>if they messed with Gunbuster humanity
>Gunbuster
it would be all over after the first Inazuma kick.
>>
>>13625769
I really, really hope you're just trying to troll.
>>
>>13625769
I Am Legend isn't about humanity being fucked in the grimdark sense. It's about humanity being replaced. Even that makes it sound too fucked up. The vampires are the new society and the last human going around fucking their shit up during the day is their spooky bed time story.
>>
>>13625770
The aliens reply to an email from an African prince who is offering to help them invade, if they just do a quick favor for him.
>>
>>13625769
That's not the point of I Am Legend, it's that the human survivor was the real monster all along. The vampires are terrified of him, and just want to save this girl he kidnapped.
>>
>>13625769

It's not a zombie movie, it's a vampire movie. And vampire movies don't usually tend to end on "humanity is fucked". I can't even think of any off hand that do. Even if it were a zombie movie though, the entire point of the story is about a human becoming the monster to a new race despite his best intentions and only realizing it after the fact so if you just want a humanity fuck yea ending to a zombie movie you could just pick a different zombie story or write your own - adapting a story that revolves around a different premise to end in that fashion is just being silly.

>>13625779

Did they at least include the proper ending on the DVDs and Blu Ray?

>>13625749
>>"Haha! Puny humans, we have Baidu installed now!"
>"we don't know how, it just appeared there, we can't get rid of it neither."
>>
>>13625787
They didn't include it on the copy I rented, but supposedly there's a special edition with it.
>>
So why is Jeff Goldblum in this, and not Jurassic World? Did he buy a new boat or something?
>>
>>13625749
>aliens are defeated not because of humanity's ability to fight, but because the aliens keep getting norton pop ups on their coms/huds suggesting an upgrade/diagnostic run during decisive moments
>>
>>13625785

He doesn't kidnap her, at least from what I recall of the story. She approaches him when he's outside during the day and the two of them go back to his house, where he discovers she's a vampire somehow or other (can't recall how offhand) - she was just wearing make up to conceal her pale skin and so on. She approached him because the vampires were trying to find out why he was doing what he was doing, killing them all off and scaring the shit out of them like some kind of monster. She eventually realizes he has no idea that vampires have a society and are actually just trying to get along and he gets captured despite their understanding, but she helps him by giving him a more peaceful way to die than the burning at the stake the vampire mob wants to give him.

I'd never actually been spoiled on the story of I Am Legend when I read it and the ending really struck me because it turned things on their head so well.
>>
>>13625813
In the movie, he outright kidnaps her (because all vampires are really obviously huge CGI monsters in the movie, so she can't pass as human). He seeks out where they sleep and sets up traps for vampires to use for his experiments, and she literally gets trapped in his net.
>>
>>13625749
>"Haha! Puny humans, we run on Linux now!"
>"Does anyone now how to compile the new drivers for the fold drive?"

>>13625817
Jeff Goldblum tricks the aliens into installing Gentoo by telling them it will make them impervious to attacks.
>>
>>13625816

Oh, well all the more reason not to see the movie at any point ever I guess.
>>
>>13624084
Luc Besson may actually have written it when he was 15. He wrote Fifth Element when he was about that old.
>>
>>13625825

That explains a lot about Fifth Element. I'd still watch the shit out of a sequel mind, because while it's dumb, it's a fun dumb.
>>
>>13625761
>>13625747
Oh wait, I looked it up, maybe Will's reasons for not getting involved are more reasonable. Specifically, the failure of his movie with Jayden made him much more leery of father-son adventure movies, which Resurgence initially shaped up to be:

http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Why-Smith-Isn-t-Independence-Day-Resurgence-72184.html

>Then, as Emmerich puts it, After Earth happened. And all of a sudden, Will Smith wasn’t eager to rush into a science-fiction story structured around a father-son duo on an adventure. Emmerich told us:

So at least the way I'm reading it, Resurgence features the grown-up stepson from the original movie, but after After Earth bombed, Will Smith didn't think he'd do so well with another "father-son" scifi adventure. I can sympathize, I guess, it's understandable he'd try to be cautious these days.
>>
>>13625823
The weird part is that it seems like they tried even harder to push that he was the monster, and making it a bigger twist that they're actually people too (since they can't talk, they're just these massive, screeching bat monsters), only to then just switch the ending to a dumb "A butterfly pattern in a window makes him blow himself and a few of the vampires up. But he also saved humanity because he made a cure, and nobody has any reason to feel bad for the vampires because they were just monsters all along".

I really need to read the book.
>>
>>13625728
Carlton hosts America's Funniest Home Videos now, so I guess it runs in the family.
>>
>>13625826
Fifth Element is the best kind of dumb.
>>
>>13625826
Yeah, I don't hate Luc Besson. When he writes sci-fi, it's not too terrible. The man's fetishes are very transparent. Not that it's a bad thing.
>>
>>13625828
Woah, I did not expect him to have learned from his mistakes. Good for him.

Although the fact that it was a father-son story was really far from the worst thing about After Earth.
>>
>>13625834
He's French, they openly flaunt their fetishes if they can. You should visit a French comic book stores if you get the chance, they display their porn in the windows and on the walls instead of hiding it in the back.
>>
>>13625779
It comes off especially weird because they kept in all the foreshadowing and clues that the monsters were actually intelligent. I think even in near the end when they broke into Will Smith's house they kept all the little bits that suggested they were just trying to rescue the girl he kidnapped.
Then Will Smith blows himself up
>>
>>13625850
Yeah, they only thing they did to make the new ending less out of nowhere was inserting a really awkward and nonsensical line about a butterfly on a window. But all the foreshadowing to the actual goddamn point of the story is still there. Including the title of the movie (there's just a really half-assed voice over about how Will Smith became a legend for saving humanity). Bleh.

I'd say Bad Boys was what made him famous as a film actor and got him in to the public attention as an action star instead of a hip hop star or television comedian, rather than Independence Day. He probably got more money for Independence Day, but only because Bad Boys had actually done well. I'd say Bad Boys is the better film too, both in terms of it's comedy and it's action - though it's not as cheesy.

That's great but why not just show up as an instructor or high ranking military dude, or hell, the president? He didn't have to be the protagonist.

He may have other commitments that prevent him from being in the area during the time they'll be filming. He's making several other films and recording an album. Between that and time with family and such he may just not have thought it worth the hassle or been able to arrange a suitable time.

Seems like they might actually remember there's a world outside America this time.

There is a market outside of Murica this time.
>>

That's a pretty neat setting detail. I forget if the aliens were all psychic linked to each other and followed one unified will, but if not it makes me wonder if some of the survivors joined humanity to avoid getting shot to pieces.
>>
>>13627963

would humans even accept the survivors? probably not.

He joined the alien Cult in real life. They couldn't trust him to not join the aliens in the movie.

No they just speak through telepathy because they have no vocal chords.

They're just the first to surrender.

The first movie was pretty awful, once you got past the props.
Not sure why you would want to continue with that universe.
>>
>>13627975
I can imagine that a minority of really, REALLY, depraved people would accept them, or at the very least post naughty drawings of the aliens on booru sites.
Who knows what kind of insane dosh an alien could earn in a southeast asian bordello!

I don't think they are incompetent I think they are fully aware they exist in a 50's B movie universe so they make use of the setting to win the day.

I mostly liked the monster and ship designs, plus it had Lonestar and Ian Malcom in it.

It's the epitome of silly popcorn flicks. It's not good, but it's carried by a pretty strong cast of charismatic actors to a satisfyingly silly conclusion.
Emmerich is at his best when he keeps his tongue in his cheek rather than trying to make anything profound or have a message.
It's simple and fun and never tries to be anything but. And that's why it's enjoyable.

Independence Day 2 looks smarter than a new Star Trek movie.
>>
>>13628207
This is tragically true.
At least it would be tragic if Into Darkness wasn't so bumfuck retarded.
>>
>>13628222
Into Darkness...

how the fuck can a movie outright just copy shit from previous movies and still totally miss the point?
>>
>>13628239
I think the thing that burned my bum the most was the while "Starfleet not a military!" bullshit that Roddenberry tried to pull when he was alive.
The original Wrath of Khan played it right by giving them military-style uniforms against Roddenberry's wishes. He was responsible for those horrible white jumpsuits everyone wore in the first one.

No, its the "terraformer" the aliens were waiting for at the end of the last movie. It is 2/3 the size of Earth.

You don't even need to be depraved to accept them just smart enough to understand that they are not the only ones out there and its better to have the knowledge of someone who already traveled the cosmos on your side
