Probably because the weapon pod isn't done yet. In the trailer, you see the pod fold out into twin over-the-shoulder cannons, and they haven't finished the moulding for that yet. So they just put a generic filler pod on for fighter mode.

Here, you can see how the fuselage section behind the cockpit now folds down, to provide enough clearance for the weapon pod to remain stowed in Battroid mode. At least, I THINK there's enough room.

The only thing that worries me about Delta is that it seems pretty similar to Frontier. I don't love every Macross series, and I'd like something that harkens back to SDF Macross, like a "Space War II," but I still like how each installment looks, feels and acts so different from the rest. The YF-30 and VF-31 aren't VF-25 derivatives. While they look similar, their transformation structure is quite different. I'd actually say it's closer to the VF-4 than the VF-25, in terms of how it all comes together.

Well they do have Space America with Macross 11. An all English speaking fleet home of Fire Bomber American and their manager Lynn Kaifun. Macross 11 and the planet Zola is located at the galactic rim. It just happens Macross Delta is set at the rim also according Shoji Kawamori's Forbes interview. Macross Delta also has an unnamed pilot in the preview that looks like a Zolan.

Music was arguably more central to the SDF story, since Minmay ended the war BY SINGING. It was the pop idol who was the main symbol of Macross City's superior culture, which is why so many zentradi defected. 7 and Frontier actually ties it back into the fighting more because singing is like a power up when the mechs are fighting, which isn't bad either, both kinds of story are fine.
