I find it difficult to pay attention to this show. Maybe it's because of the number of events that go on, I don't expect a kid's cartoon to be so involving.

Are the compilation films easier to watch?
I really want a complete, modern remake of the whole series, and origins doesn't seem to be enough so far.

For me it wasn't the animation so much as it was the sound quality. It is very badly dated. I ended up watching the dub and it actually made a difference, I marathoned it happily enough.

It is my personal headcanon that there is something wrong with the air in Shangrila and Moon Moon, and everyone is acting like they're high because they actually are. Once they get off Shangrila they sober up, Moon Moon has its own brand of fungus/spore induced craziness but then once they leave there the rest of the show is pretty much free of that silliness (except when Chara's on screen). Even Mashy goes from flippant chivalrous goof to vengeful knight when he comes back later on.

Xabungle is a unique setting with varied character and mechanical designs, a decent score and characters that make sense in Tomino terms that don't wear at your nerves
ZZ is a UC installment that takes place as soon as Zeta ends with annoying characters doing stupid(and boring) things in an ugly little colony and in the Argama which you'll get sick of when at least half of Zeta takes place there. Moon Moon exists. It's not at all interesting to watch

I really liked the 1st half of Zeta, but thought the show completely fell apart on late 2nd half.

I'm currently 10 episodes into ZZ and it's pretty bad

The compilation films cover all the major battles, and the rewrites/changes are meant to reflect the more 'serious' story Tomino wanted to portray, which basically means no enemy mobile armors of the week and no G-Armor. I suppose that part boils down to personal preference, but I like it more without that shit.

I think it was to not upstage Kamille. Like if Amuro was introduced as a full time character with his own Zeta/Mark II, wouldn't it kind of take some focus off of Kamille and his character development? Wouldn't it make all the episodes leading up to Amuro seem pointless?

TL:DR - Zeta is Kamille's story, not Amuro's. Amuro would've upstaged him.

On the subject of Katz. I think the point of his character was to show a path that Kamille could have gone down. They're both impulsive, immature, complain a lot, and even have an ill fated love interest. As annoying as he is, he did his job as a character.

Gundam in general really isn't very good. Zeta had characters that didn't act remotely like people in something that was supposed to be realistic and whose deaths were obvious within 2 minutes of screen time. By itself, I might be able to overlook that flaw, but with the cartoonishly evil Titans, weird plot, and overall very serious tone just made the whole show seem pointless, flat, and silly.

Are you baiting? Yeah, psychic ghosts sure are realistic! Serious tone =/= realism. And a story not adhering to reality with total fidelity doesn't mean that it has nothing to say about reality. In that sense all the major characters are thematically purposeful.

I do think Tomino has a bad habit of emphasizing his themes a little too hard to the detriment of other elements, though. I also agree about the Titans; they could have been more grounded than they were. Zeta has its fair share of problems, but I don't think being "pointless" is one of them.

Z might've been my favorite Gundam series if it weren't for the blatant use of new mecha every 3 chapters to sell more toys. I do know that toys are what finance this anime, I do know that this wasn't even new when Z came out, but it's just too much. Most of it is composed of little arcs of 3 episodes each that are almost exclusively about a new mecha that they came out with and that has no role to play at all in the larger scheme. To the point it was actually annoying. Besides that, this is an excellent anime series.

they're having some sort of weird newtype experience that is unique to newtypes, neither of them really understands it but the implication (to me) is that being newtypes they're supposed to feel intuitively that they "know each other" without having met (it's not just kamille seeing people (he only sees women that he is familiar with), haman sees char and scirocco (men that she is familiar with) despite their differences/being on different sides in a war (hence: "so people can understand each other!")

tl;dr they're sensing each other as newtypes but neither of them has enough experience doing this so they don't know what's happening right away

The Newtype spirit / psychoenergy monster type things Haman and Kamille project at each other in episode 47... They're the same thing Dozle used in 0079 when he was standing on the Big Zam shooting at Amuro, right? Who projected his? It seemed pretty inexplicable in 0079.
