Sahelanthropus is in theory solid as fuck and combines a lot of good tech into a reasonably threatening vertical tank of sorts.

Problem is that due to the sheer bulk of 80's computer technology there's not enough room for a pilot (and Skullface doesn't want an AI doing incredibly boneheaded things either), and the workaround that results in the Sahelanthropus fought in-game is literally using a psychic child as an interface between any sufficiently pissed off person and Sahelanthropus, controlling the mech like a marionette.

TL/DR: shit don't actually work, Emmerich can combine disparate technologies like you wouldn't believe but he can't make smaller computers and no one wants smaller pilots.

As for RAXA, it's nothing more than the prototype of what amounts to a walking MIRV. It's junk, in fact much like Sahelanthropus it's junk that's enhanced by psychic bullshit.

Just that even without the psychic bullshit RAXA is super junk sorta like Shagohod, whereas Sahelanthropus is cut from the same 80's sci fi cloth as Peace Walker but runs afoul of the limitations of the time, hence the junk status.

Mostly because they never make a distinction between Gears until implicitly in TPP where you have all these different Gear class weapons, thus being able to compromise between Granin's vision of a flexible legged weapon and the actual meme of the Metal Gear being a nuclear artillery piece.

No, I'm talking about Metal Gear Solid 2.

Otacon flat out says it is not an actual Metal Gear because it lacks a nuclear arsenal. It uses the name Metal Gear to gain popularity, and in reality it is an "Anti-Metal Gear" - it's designed as a hard counter to the relatively slow, but heavily armored Metal Gear REX rip-offs by being highly mobile and easily mass produced.
